Errata and First Update to the 2010 Checklist of the Lepidoptera Of
Errata and first uppppdate to the 2010 checklist of the Lepidoptera of Alberta Gregory R. Pohl, Jason J Dombroskie, Jean‐François Landry, Charles D Bird, and Vazrick Nazari lead author contact: [email protected] Introduction: Since the Annotated list of the Lepidoptera of Alberta was published in March 2010 (Pohl et al. 2010), a few typographical and nomenclatural errors have come to the authors' attention, as well as three erroneous AB records that were inadvertently omitted from that publication. Additionally, a considerable number of new AB species records have been brought to our attention since that checklist went to press. As expected, most are microlepidoptera. We detail all these items below, in what we hope will be a regular series of addenda to the AB list. If you are aware of further errors or additions to the AB Lepidoptera list, please contact the authors. Wit hin the NidNoctuoidea, there are a few minor iiiinconsistencies in the order of species wihiithin genera, and in the order of genera within tribes or subtribes, as compared to the sequence published by Lafontaine & Schmidt (2010). As well, the sequence of tribes in the AB list does not exactly match that of Lafontaine & Schmidt (2010), particularly in the Erebinae. We are not detailing those minor differences here unless they involve a move to a new genus or new higher taxonomic category. Errata: Abstract, p. 2, line 10, should read "1530... annotations are given" 41 Nemapogon granella (p. 55). Add Kearfott (1905) to the AB literature records. 78 Caloptilia syringella (p. 60). This species should be placed in the genus Gracillaria as per De Prins & De Prins (2005). -
Austroconops Wirth and Lee, a Lower Cretaceous Genus of Biting Midges

CRAIG2 ABSTRACT The eggs and all four larval instars of Austroconops mcmillani Wirth and Lee and A. annettae Borkent, new species, are described. The pupa of A. mcmillani is also described. Life cycles and details of behavior of each life stage are reported, including feeding by the aquatic larvae on microscopic organisms in very wet soil/detritus, larval locomotion, female adult biting habits on humans and kangaroos, and male adult swarming. Austroconops an- nettae Borkent, new species, is attributed to the ®rst author. Cladistic analysis shows that the two extant Austroconops Wirth and Lee species are sister species. Increasingly older fossil species of Austroconops represent increasingly earlier line- ages. Among extant lineages, Austroconops is the sister group of Leptoconops Skuse, and together they form the sister group of all other Ceratopogonidae. Dasyhelea Kieffer is the sister group of Forcipomyia Meigen 1 Atrichopogon Kieffer, and together they form the sister group of the Ceratopogoninae. Forcipomyia has no synapomorphies and may be paraphyletic in relation to Atrichopogon. Austroconops is morphologically conservative (possesses many plesiomorphic features) in each life stage and this allows for interpretation of a number of features within Ceratopogonidae and other Culicomorpha. A new interpretation of Cretaceous fossil lineages shows that Austroconops, Leptoconops, Minyohelea Borkent, Jordanoconops 1 Royal British Columbia Museum, American Museum of Natural History, and Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad. -

The only known list of ants of Oklahoma is one prepared by Mo Ro Smith (1935)0 Early in 1954 a survey of the state of Oklahoma was made to determine the species present and their distributiono The results of this survey, which blanketed the entire State, are given in this paper. Eretmoptera Murphyi Schaeffer (Diptera: Chironomjdae), an Apparently Parthenogenetic Antarctic Midge
ERETMOPTERA MURPHYI SCHAEFFER (DIPTERA: CHIRONOMJDAE), AN APPARENTLY PARTHENOGENETIC ANTARCTIC MIDGE P. S. CRANSTON Entomology Department, British Museum (Natural History), Cromwell Road, London SWl SBD ABSTRACT. Chironomid midges are amongst the most abundant and diverse holo metabolous insects of the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic. Eretmoptera murphyi Schaeffer, 1914, has been enigmatic to systematists since the first discovery of adult females on South Georgia. The rediscovery of the species as a suspected introduction to Signy Island (South Orkney Islands) allows the description of the immature stages for the first time and the redescription of the female, the only sex known. E. murphyi larvae are terrestrial, living in damp moss and peat, and the brachypterous adult is probably parthenogenetic. Eretmoptera appears to have an isolated position amongst the terrestrial Orthocladiinae: the close relationship with the marine Clunio group of genera suggested by previous workers is not supported. INTRODUCTION In the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions, the Chironomidae (non-biting midges) are the commonest, most diverse and most widely distributed group ofhoi ometa bolo us insects. For example, Belgica antarctica Jacobs is the most southerly distributed free-living insect (Wirth and Gressitt, 1967; Usher and Edwards, 1984) and the podonomine genus Parochlus is found throughout the sub-Antarctic islands. Recently, Sublette and Wirth (1980) reported 22 species in 18 genera belonging to 6 subfamilies of Chironomidae from New Zealand's sub-Antarctic islands. One sub-Antarctic midge that has remained rather enigmatic since its discovery is Eretmoptera murphyi. Two females of this brachypterous chironomid were collected by R. C. Murphy from South Georgia in 1913 and described, together with other insects, by Schaeffer (1914). -

Wings are absent in these species. They live among the rocks along the seashore, including the Hawaii, Japan and Korea. This genus is presently represented by 14 species worldwide. We found the first species of Caconemobius from China on the coast of Guangzhou. One new species, Caconemobius dibrachiatus Ma and Zhang, sp. nov., is described and illustrated. Key words: Red List of Threatened Animals, Paranemobius, Orthoptera, Shenzhen Introduction For their involvement in coastal ecology and as an indicator of environment quality, species of Caconemobius are considered endangered and recorded in the Red List of Threatened Animals (Hoekstra, 1998). Caconemobius was established by Kirby (1906) with Paranemobius schauinslandi as type species. They are a small cricket species, but slightly larger than normal for members of the Nemobiinae. They possess rather elongate legs, but wings, tympanum on front tibiae, and sometimes, ocelli are absent (Figs. -
About the Book the Format Acknowledgments
About the Book For more than ten years I have been working on a book on bryophyte ecology and was joined by Heinjo During, who has been very helpful in critiquing multiple versions of the chapters. But as the book progressed, the field of bryophyte ecology progressed faster. No chapter ever seemed to stay finished, hence the decision to publish online. Furthermore, rather than being a textbook, it is evolving into an encyclopedia that would be at least three volumes. Having reached the age when I could retire whenever I wanted to, I no longer needed be so concerned with the publish or perish paradigm. In keeping with the sharing nature of bryologists, and the need to educate the non-bryologists about the nature and role of bryophytes in the ecosystem, it seemed my personal goals could best be accomplished by publishing online. This has several advantages for me. I can choose the format I want, I can include lots of color images, and I can post chapters or parts of chapters as I complete them and update later if I find it important. Throughout the book I have posed questions. I have even attempt to offer hypotheses for many of these. It is my hope that these questions and hypotheses will inspire students of all ages to attempt to answer these. Some are simple and could even be done by elementary school children. Others are suitable for undergraduate projects. And some will take lifelong work or a large team of researchers around the world. Have fun with them! The Format The decision to publish Bryophyte Ecology as an ebook occurred after I had a publisher, and I am sure I have not thought of all the complexities of publishing as I complete things, rather than in the order of the planned organization.
