September 2013 – Dooral Roundup 1 EDITOR’S REPORT The Times are a Changing By Judy Pope

With an election coming up very shortly it is most disappointing to watch the two major parties spending millions of dollars criticizing each others’ policies, and neither of them offering anything of substance to the people of Australia.

lso disappointing is that young people are so disillusioned with A our political system that 67% of them say they are going to do an invalid vote. Integrity and policy have gone out the window and big business and the media have taken over our politicians and there seem to be few left who don’t play the game. They don’t last long if they don’t toe the political line so there is little motivation to stick to ethics of any sort. The lines have been come blurred between policy and big business profit and we are risking over burdening an already over taxed middle class. Real Estate sales in residential Round Corner and Glenhaven continue to do well. Most listings are selling easily within the week and the demand is far out stripping the supply making it a fantastic time to sell. After the last two elections real estate prices actually dropped and the three before that saw prices rise.

The really good news is that spring is here and good times ahead regardless of the political situation.

The Anzac Spirit is Alive and Well in Wiseman’s Ferry

The residents of Wisemans Ferry have banded together to create a lasting memorial to those from the region who served Australia during wartime.

he memorial is being built on land owned by Hornsby Shire TCouncil, but the funds for its construction are coming from the community. Already $30,000 worth of work has been done, but not a single cent has changed hands because all material has been donated by local businesses and all labour has been volunteered by local residents. One of the bills the committee received for some significant work simply says, “Two middies when we are next in town.” “After 100 years, this town deserves its own memorial,” says Vietnam veteran Wayne Moore, who is spearheading the project. “The aim is to have the memorial in place to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli landing and to record the names of the district servicemen and women who left their family life and farms to serve their nation. All we have now are two honour boards, which are missing a lot of names and contain some that have been placed there incorrectly.” With the help of War Memorial an accurate list has been created, with 82 names that will be engraved on plaques. 4 Dooral Roundup – September 2013 Smart Start Program gets Underway for New Businesses

Hill’s Shire Council’s Economic Development and Marketing Team ran their first free Smart Start consultation session for 12 new local businesses this week.

ayor Dr Michelle Byrne praised the program, which targets new M businesses that are registered in the Hills. “People often start a business with a huge depth of knowledge about their particular craft, but perhaps not so much knowledge about doing business,” Mayor Byrne said. “New business owners often suffer early setbacks and often learn how to do things only after making mistakes. The Smart Start program is designed to fast-track the learning process and give businesses some tips on how to become well-known.” Mayor Byrne also thanked Hills Shire Council Business Ambassador John Glover. “Mr Glover’s local business knowledge is invaluable and I’d like to thank him for assisting with the Smart Start program.” After completing the Smart Start program, businesses are then able to participate in the free Smart Biz program, which offers one-on-one tailored information sessions.

Workshop outcomes and benefits: > practical examples on how you can use Council’s online demographic profiles > resources that will save you time and provide you with supporting information that will help you manage your future marketing activities > access to databases that have been segmented into their business description.

The Smart Start Program ensures you are connected to all the possible help and advisory assistance available in the Sydney Hills Region.

6 Dooral Roundup – September 2013 VALE Peter McCartney 11.08.1937 to 13.08.2013 By Paul Pixton

The Hills District lost one of its finest citizens with the passing of Peter McCartney on the 13th August this year.

eter was a surveyor in the Hills District for over 50 years. PThere is hardly a street or a development, stretching from Parramatta to Wisemans Ferry, that Peter has not had an involvement in over the years At the time of his death he was still actively surveying. Peter and his family have lived in Galston, Glenhaven and McGraths Hill. Peter was a foundation member of Dural Rotary Club in 1967, in fact he was the last current founding member and was a member for 46 years. He served as President in 1977 and has held every position in the Club at some stage or other. His outstanding commitment to Rotary was exemplary. He was very much a hands-on person who would always get the work done with no fuss. He was awarded with a Paul Harris Fellow and Sapphire Paul Harris Fellow Rotary’s highest award. Part of Peter’s legacy is the renovation of the Dural Memorial Hall while he was President. Peter’s other great love, apart from his family, was the Kenthurst Cricket Club. Peter was a former President of the Club, Selector, Coach and Player. In fact he played cricket well into his 60’s. He was a great mentor for the younger players for 40 years. In 2000 he was awarded the National Sports Award Medal for Cricket. Peter will be greatly missed by his many friends, family and colleagues.

Our best wishes go to his wife Maureen and children Jackie, Jeanette and Michael and to his grandchildren.

LOCAL PAPERS REPORT, SEPTEMBER, 2013 Dural and District Historical Society June Roughley Memorial Lecture

On Saturday the 17th August the Dural and District Historical Society held its inaugural lecture in memory of its founder, Mrs June Roughley.

he Arcadia Community Hall was the T ideal venue in which to hear, Mr Tom Richmond, give his talk on the exploration and settlement of Berowra Creek and the surrounding area. Mr Richmond is well known to many locals through his time at Galston High School, where he was an inspiring history teacher. He has furthered his earlier lesson preparation research with extensive study of the history of our district including the burials on Bar Island and pre European history of the area. Ever the raconteur, he also had many tales to tell of interesting and infamous former residents of our district. Murderers, receivers of stolen goods, Smugglers Ridge, the ghost of the Green Man Hotel, our own secret river and the lime burners, all got a mention and enthralled the audience. A transcript of the talk will be available at the Society’s History Cottage. It was an interesting and enjoyable afternoon and the Historical Society is sure it will become a fixture on the local calendar of events. Next year’s lecture is already in the planning. At the next meeting of the Dural Historical Society, on Saturday September 14th at 2 pm, Michael Bell will be the guest speaker. He will be talking about three statley homes that he visited in England last year. They are Hampton Court, Sissinghurst and Erdig. All welcome.

he largest national fundraising event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, T Daffodil Day raises essential funds for cancer research, prevention and support services and the day is well supported in the Dural district. The beautiful spring weather created the perfect backdrop for the Hills Grammar Junior School SRC to raise over $2500 for cancer research on Daffodil Day. This is the fifth year the Student Representative Council has run the fundraiser. The junior students were encouraged to dress in their brightest yellow and support the day by ordering merchandise. “The bears were the most popular followed by the balls, pens and wristbands,” explained Madeleine Rice from Year 3. “It’s a really good cause to raise money for and next year we hope to make $3000!” At the Round Corner Shopping Centre Joanne Stefanovic set up shop outside Col’s Newsagency and with helpers Vikki Gaucci and Mandy Harling raised over $1500 on the day. Congratulations to all the volunteer fund raisers and the local community for their support for this worthy event.

Daffodil Day is for all of us to grow hope for a brighter, cancer-free future.
