Brussels, 1st February 2011

Dear friends,

The Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) would like to invite you to its seminar

could do it. So can we!” supported by the Fondation Jean-Jaurès, the Fundació Rafael Campalans, PES Women and the Committee on Women’s Rights and Equality in the European Parliament.

This event will take place on 28th February and 1st March 2011 in the European Parliament in Brussels.

Promoting gender equality is for FEPS a multifaceted challenge. The very first FEPS publication on this field was presented with the title “Women’s position in the European Union”, whose findings were discussed in Brussels in spring 2009. In search for effective measures and best practices, the debate continued in Boston and in the autumn 2009 and 2010 including both European and American experts. The context of the economic crisis was debated at a special conference organised in Paris. Building on the experiences gathered at the seminars, FEPS dedicated the second issues of its scientific magazine, Queries to “The next wave of emancipation” and launched an online debate on Facebook with the same title.

During these discussions, there has been a demand from several actors to reinforce the gender agenda at European level by giving a new impetus to the next wave of gender emancipation, and FEPS would like to use the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the International Women’s Day to discuss what could be the elements of a new progressives thinking on gender, emancipation and . The seminar aims to discuss what has been achieved already, how to use these achievements, how to build on them and, more precisely, what could be the strategies for a progressive way forward for gender equality.

It would be an honour and pleasure for us to be able to welcome you at this seminar and we would be pleased to hear your opinion and ideas on these issues.

I hope you receive this invitation positively. Should you have any additional questions, please, do not hesitate to contact Judit TÁNCZOS, FEPS junior policy advisor, at +32 2 234 6904 or [email protected].

With my very best regards,

Ernst Stetter FEPS Secretary General
