Both of these plant groups are genetically diverse, locally adapted and represent a potential source of traits for adapting crops to changing environmental conditions and human needs, particularly in the face of the increasing negative impacts of climate change. If efficiently preserved and sustainably used, they can contribute significantly to an increase in food security, alleviation of human poverty and improvement of ecosystem stability. However, the diversity of both crop wild relatives and landraces is severely threatened by environmental mismanagement and socio-political pressures and is quickly being eroded or lost. The need to effectively conserve and manage PGRFA is enshrined in a number of international agreements, including in the Convention on Biological Diversity and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. FAO’s Member Countries have long been calling for greater attention to the genetic conservation of crop and crop related diversity that is essential for food security, as well as improved collaboration and coordination of actions at national, regional and global levels. Recognizing the need to support a systematic and coordinated approach at global level to conserve diverse crops and crop wild relatives in situ (i.e., in their native environments), the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture is currently exploring options for establishing a global network for their in situ conservation and on-farm management. Despite the increased political, scientific and public interest in conserving PGRFA, many countries still lack effective actions to systematically and effectively protect crop wild relative and landrace diversity in situ with adequate complementary back-up in ex situ facilities. The Second Report on the State of the World’s Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture identified a number of gaps at national level, including the need to develop specific strategies for in situ conservation and on-farm management. This resource book aims to help guide national governments in developing a systematic approach to conservation and use of crop wild relatives and landraces. The focus is on in situ and on-farm conservation techniques, but methods for identifying ex situ conservation needs are also provided since a complementary approach is fundamental to ensure that genetic material is adequately conserved and available for utilization. The book is primarily intended for staff associated with National Plant Genetic Resources Programmes, but may also be valuable for universities and research organizations, NGOs and other institutions involved in conservation planning. The resource book is divided into two parts: Part 1 focuses on the political and economic context of conservation and use

This is especially true for monocarpic plants, which reproduce only once in their lifetime, as is the case of Heracleum mantegazzianum Sommier & Levier. This species reproduces only by seed; reproduction by vegetative means has never been observed. As in other Apiaceae, H. mantegazzianum has unspecialized flowers, which are promiscuously pollinated by unspecialized pollinators. Many small, closely spaced flowers with exposed nectar make each insect visitor to the inflorescence a potential and probable pollinator (Bell, 1971). A list of insect taxa sampled on H. mantegazzianum (Grace and Nelson, 1981) shows that Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera and Hymenoptera are the most frequent visitors. Heracleum mantegazzianum has an andromonoecious sex habit, as has almost half of British Apiaceae (Lovett-Doust and Lovett-Doust, 1982); together with perfect (hermaphrodite) flowers, umbels bear a variable propor- tion of male (staminate) flowers. The species is considered to be self-compati- ble, which is a typical feature of Apiaceae (Bell, 1971), and protandrous (Grace and Nelson, 1981; Perglová et al., 2006). Protandry is a temporal sep- aration of male and female flowering phases, when stigmas become receptive after the dehiscence of anthers. It is common in umbellifers. Where dichogamy is known, 40% of umbellifers are usually protandrous, compared to only about 11% of all dicotyledons (Lovett-Doust and Lovett-Doust, 1982).

Through a literature review of ethnohistoric accounts, Moche iconographic interpretation, and nutritional analysis, I explore the symbolic importance of the peanut, as well as other special properties that may have contributed to peanuts’ luxury status in the pre-Hispanic North Coast. This study documents the peanut’s use not only as a comestible, but also as a prestige good used in competitive feasts and for veneration of the dead. I show how the peanut was used both practically and symbolically in order to create and reify status differences between elites and commoners, and how this trend extends into the South Coast. Klein5 Abstract ‘Jones Hybrid’ hickory is an accession in the National Collection of Genetic Resources for Pecans and Hickories for which information about origin, identity and characteristics is very incomplete. Phenotypic and genetic profiles, when examined in the context of historic literature, provide evidence that the accession in question is ‘Siers’ a cultivar of Carya laneyi (an interspecific hybrid between C. ovata and C. cordiformis). The accession has traits that make it inter‑ esting× in the pecan breeding program, with potential for both rootstock and scion development. The tall, slender tree form of ‘Jones Hybrid’ is a trait that could be valuable in commercial pecan cultivars, allowing increased tree densities and reducing the need for expensive hedging operations. Tree size reduction is a goal to be pursued in scion selec‑ tion and rootstock development, with each goal requiring assessment of reproductive potential of the accession. The present report indicates successful micropropagation of this species. In our study, medium supplemented with BAP 2.0 mg/L, IAA 1.0 mg/L, and GA3 1.0 mg/L was found to be the most suitable for long-term culture and for effective proliferation, irrespective of the passage number. Roots induction, without basal callus formation, was observed when individual microshoots were placed on Murashige & Skoog medium augmented with auxin, and formation was the most advantageous in the presence of NAA alone or when combined with IAA or IBA. The encapsulated propagules were tested for their capability to endure different storage periods under low temperature. Therefore, we developed an efficient method for synseeds production by encapsulation of axillary buds in the sodium alginate matrix, storage for 2, 4, and 6 months, as well as the regeneration process.
