ST. LEONARD'S CHURCH FRANKLEY, B32 4BL All Welcome! CHURCH NEWS - APRIL 2020 EASTER REVD. JANE WRITES: COVID 100% We are in Lockdown so nothing is happening for the next three months. Stay at home and keep safe and keep phoning one another. As I write the news informs me that we have already had over a thousand deaths in the United Kingdom as a result of Coronavirus and the death toll may reach over 20,000. Our prime minister, health secretary and heir to the throne are all infected. Never, in our lifetimes have we suffered such loss of life in peacetime and never before have our churches been locked and our priests grounded. There is huge need and fear, yet we cannot reach out and hug, or give a reassuring visit. Confined to our homes like everyone else, it feels as if there is little we can do. Our fear is accentuated because we are fighting an invisible enemy and because we are constantly reminded that the crisis is accelerating. As we enter into the time in lent when we remember our Lord’s passion, we remember that he suffered for us and suffers with us. He is very present in our troubles. This Passiontide, we are called to enter his sufferings and pray for our world; for all those we know who are being affected by what is going on and for all those already vulnerable on our prayer list. We may not be able to light candles in church but we can light them at home and say our prayers there. We can develop a prayer space, maybe developing the changes in our church’s season by using a cross and planting an Easter garden. For many of us, this Easter will seem very strange. We will not be able to meet together in church and share our usual Easter greetings. Nevertheless, the Lord is risen indeed. Easter reminds us that Jesus has triumphed over sin, death and general stupidity. Every time we hear the words COVID 19 and our hearts are full of fear, we can use the letters to remind us that Christ Overcomes Viruses and Infectious Diseases. COVID 100%. We look forward to the defeat of this dreadful virus. What a party we will have when we are once again free to mix. Until that time, we will remind ourselves that as Christians we are never alone. We are a communion of saints, from the past and present, rooted and grounded within the love of God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. While we are less able to spend time with our friends here on earth, we have more time to commune with our heavenly community of which we are already citizens For those of you who are online there are loads of resources available to help us, some of which are listed at the end of this Newsletter. I have found Common worship Night Prayer, and the “Pray as You Go” apps particularly helpful. For those of you who do not have access to these resources and need cheering up, I recommend thanking Jesus and praising him for his love for you and the new life he give to all who come to him. “Songs of Praise”, a televised Sunday morning service and early morning Sunday Christian radio will continue to broadcast. 1 Continued overleaf Continued from previous page The God channels found on the Sky channels from 580 onwards need to be viewed with discernment. I have found Revelation TV on 581 is the best. “Church with Out Walls” services which have been a blessing to me are on that channel at 10.30 am and repeated at 8.30 pm on Sundays. This is a communion service with hymns. You can join in spiritually and provide your own bread and wine. It is not an Anglican service but the words from 1 Corinthians with which we are familiar are used. If you find this station too informal, EWTN, the Roman Catholic channel offers Daily Mass and prayer throughout the day. If you haven’t got Bible Reading notes or access to Daily prayer from Common worship, try using words like ACTS (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication) to help your prayers. The Lord’s Prayer can be used as a way of praying, not just as a prayer to be recited by taking each section and praying with it. How we long for God’s Kingdom to come at this time, not only for our own benefits but also for the sake of our world. Praying with the psalms is powerful. Sometimes when we are frightened our thoughts are frozen. The psalms give us the words to pray which we can adapt for our situation. Many are praying Psalm 91 at this time. We can personalise it and bring it closer to our situations by praying “I will dwell in the secret place of the most High. I will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. You are my refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust.” I am learning new skills. I used Face time because I couldn’t attend a funeral visit this week and was surprised how close it brought the bereaved. Matt, David Turner’s son was closer than if I was sitting in his living room. I am sure many of you remember him and his brothers, Simon and Daniel from when they attended church and Sunday school at St Leonard’s. They like countless others need our prayers as their grieving is affected by the restrictions put on us at funerals due to the Corona virus. Many in the diocese are using Zoom and What’s App to sustain contact. Maybe I will have mastered them by Easter. Please pray for those who have had to postpone their weddings. None of our couples have cancelled. Some have rebooked for next year. Others want to get married as soon as possible this year. They are struggling with uncertainty. I have had a new booking this week and two enquiries. We pray for Holly Hill School. Many of the staff are ill, yet the deputy and a Senior teacher are providing a skeleton staff for the benefit of the children of our care workers. We are thankful for all those risking their lives in the medical professions and emergency services, in our prisons, supermarkets and in the disposal of our rubbish. Please assure those you know personally of our prayers When this world crisis is over, I don’t believe we will be able to go back to the way we were. Maybe our climate change will be stalled by the grounding our planes and cars and we will have learnt to live more simply. Please phone me. I long to hear from you and am slowly ringing round. I haven’t many minutes left on my mobile but have increased my capacity from the 13th April onwards. STAY AT HOME AND KEEP SAFE AND KEEP PHONING ONE ANOTHER. If anyone needs support do feel free to phone Jane on Mobile: 0774 8693408 NB There are several local organisations are offering help at this difficult time and their details are provided at the end of this newsletter so you can detach them and keep them handy if you wish. HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN ACCEPTING HELP FROM OTHERS If you are receiving voluntary help do not share financial details like credit/debit card numbers or personal information. If someone you don’t know calls at your home, always ask for ID and always ensure you are comfortable sharing details like your phone number or address.
