ST. LEONARD'S CHURCH , B32 4BL All Welcome!

CHURCH NEWS - APRIL 2020 EASTER

REVD. JANE WRITES: COVID 100% We are in Lockdown so nothing is happening for the next three months. Stay at home and keep safe and keep phoning one another. As I write the news informs me that we have already had over a thousand deaths in the as a result of Coronavirus and the death toll may reach over 20,000. Our prime minister, health secretary and heir to the throne are all infected. Never, in our lifetimes have we suffered such loss of life in peacetime and never before have our churches been locked and our priests grounded. There is huge need and fear, yet we cannot reach out and hug, or give a reassuring visit. Confined to our homes like everyone else, it feels as if there is little we can do. Our fear is accentuated because we are fighting an invisible enemy and because we are constantly reminded that the crisis is accelerating. As we enter into the time in lent when we remember our Lord’s passion, we remember that he suffered for us and suffers with us. He is very present in our troubles. This Passiontide, we are called to enter his sufferings and pray for our world; for all those we know who are being affected by what is going on and for all those already vulnerable on our prayer list. We may not be able to light candles in church but we can light them at home and say our prayers there. We can develop a prayer space, maybe developing the changes in our church’s season by using a cross and planting an Easter garden. For many of us, this Easter will seem very strange. We will not be able to meet together in church and share our usual Easter greetings. Nevertheless, the Lord is risen indeed. Easter reminds us that Jesus has triumphed over sin, death and general stupidity. Every time we hear the words COVID 19 and our hearts are full of fear, we can use the letters to remind us that Christ Overcomes Viruses and Infectious Diseases. COVID 100%. We look forward to the defeat of this dreadful virus. What a party we will have when we are once again free to mix. Until that time, we will remind ourselves that as Christians we are never alone. We are a communion of saints, from the past and present, rooted and grounded within the love of God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. While we are less able to spend time with our friends here on earth, we have more time to commune with our heavenly community of which we are already citizens For those of you who are online there are loads of resources available to help us, some of which are listed at the end of this Newsletter. I have found Common worship Night Prayer, and the “Pray as You Go” apps particularly helpful. For those of you who do not have access to these resources and need cheering up, I recommend thanking Jesus and praising him for his love for you and the new life he give to all who come to him. “Songs of Praise”, a televised Sunday morning service and early morning Sunday Christian radio will continue to broadcast.

1 Continued overleaf Continued from previous page The God channels found on the Sky channels from 580 onwards need to be viewed with discernment. I have found Revelation TV on 581 is the best. “Church with Out Walls” services which have been a blessing to me are on that channel at 10.30 am and repeated at 8.30 pm on Sundays. This is a communion service with hymns. You can join in spiritually and provide your own bread and wine. It is not an Anglican service but the words from 1 Corinthians with which we are familiar are used. If you find this station too informal, EWTN, the Roman Catholic channel offers Daily Mass and prayer throughout the day. If you haven’t got Bible Reading notes or access to Daily prayer from Common worship, try using words like ACTS (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication) to help your prayers. The Lord’s Prayer can be used as a way of praying, not just as a prayer to be recited by taking each section and praying with it. How we long for God’s Kingdom to come at this time, not only for our own benefits but also for the sake of our world. Praying with the psalms is powerful. Sometimes when we are frightened our thoughts are frozen. The psalms give us the words to pray which we can adapt for our situation. Many are praying Psalm 91 at this time. We can personalise it and bring it closer to our situations by praying “I will dwell in the secret place of the most High. I will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. You are my refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust.” I am learning new skills. I used Face time because I couldn’t attend a funeral visit this week and was surprised how close it brought the bereaved. Matt, David Turner’s son was closer than if I was sitting in his living room. I am sure many of you remember him and his brothers, Simon and Daniel from when they attended church and Sunday school at St Leonard’s. They like countless others need our prayers as their grieving is affected by the restrictions put on us at funerals due to the Corona virus. Many in the diocese are using Zoom and What’s App to sustain contact. Maybe I will have mastered them by Easter. Please pray for those who have had to postpone their weddings. None of our couples have cancelled. Some have rebooked for next year. Others want to get married as soon as possible this year. They are struggling with uncertainty. I have had a new booking this week and two enquiries. We pray for Holly Hill School. Many of the staff are ill, yet the deputy and a Senior teacher are providing a skeleton staff for the benefit of the children of our care workers. We are thankful for all those risking their lives in the medical professions and emergency services, in our prisons, supermarkets and in the disposal of our rubbish. Please assure those you know personally of our prayers When this world crisis is over, I don’t believe we will be able to go back to the way we were. Maybe our climate change will be stalled by the grounding our planes and cars and we will have learnt to live more simply. Please phone me. I long to hear from you and am slowly ringing round. I haven’t many minutes left on my mobile but have increased my capacity from the 13th April onwards. STAY AT HOME AND KEEP SAFE AND KEEP PHONING ONE ANOTHER. If anyone needs support do feel free to phone Jane on Mobile: 0774 8693408

NB There are several local organisations are offering help at this difficult time and their details are provided at the end of this newsletter so you can detach them and keep them handy if you wish. HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN ACCEPTING HELP FROM OTHERS If you are receiving voluntary help do not share financial details like credit/debit card numbers or personal information. If someone you don’t know calls at your home, always ask for ID and always ensure you are comfortable sharing details like your phone number or address. Only provide information on a need to know basis and if you have seen ID. Do not feel pressured into providing information. If you have doubts about those who are approaching you, and are concerned, it is advised that you don’t engage, and report serious suspicious behaviour to the police. Remember that genuine volunteers have been instructed not to enter your home. Jill x

DAVID TURNER - R.I.P. David, who was a long time member of St. Leonard’s, sadly passed away on 30th March. I didn’t know him but Beryl and several of the long standing members who attended morning worship knew David well. Beryl told me that David had been coming to St. Leonard’s for more than 40 years and continued to attend monthly even after moving to Morecambe to live by his son many years ago after his wife sadly died. David was a Church Warden during Michael’s time and was very involved in church life. We offer our sympathy and condolences to David’s family at this sad time.

JOHN JENKINSON - R.I.P. Jacqui is sorry to announce that John, who came to our Sunday lunches with two ladies who attend St Michael's church, has sadly died suddenly. Our thoughts go out to John’s family and friends.

EASTER 2017- RICHARD & LYNN’S LAST EASTER WITH US!

Easter Sunrise Service on the Hills 2008 Christians from the churches of in South West gathered on the for a sunrise service at 5.50am on Easter day. The service coincided with the arrival of snow! However, the weather did not prevent the 70 worshippers celebrating as they sang traditional Easter hymns

‘So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.’ 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

6 REVISED CHURCH DIRECTORY & CHURCH NEWS E-MAILING LIST-

IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ!

YOUR ACTION IS REQUIRED, IF YOU WISH TO BE INCLUDED IN THE NEW DIRECTORY AND/OR REMAIN ON, OR, JOIN THE NEWSLETTER MAILING LIST! Unfortunately, very few people have provided Data Consent forms since they were requested via the last two Newsletters. Apparently, some people have assumed they don't need to complete a new form because they've done one in the past. THIS IS NOT THE CASE! I obviously didn't make it as clear as I thought I had in the last 2 newsletters that EVERYBODY needs to provide a new form if they: 1. want their contact details to be included in the new Church Directory, whether their details are included in the current 2016 Directory or not, and/or, 2. wish to join or remain on the mailing list to receive the Newsletter etc. via email (or via post if you are unable to attend church any more because of ill health) Therefore, if I haven't received a new consent form from you since 1st February 2020, you MUST provide one if you wish to be included in the new directory and/or remain on the email list. This is not me being awkward, it's to comply with Data Privacy legislation, sorry! In view of this, IF there is another Data Privacy Consent form included with this newsletter, please complete and return it to me by 30th April 2020 if you wish your details to be included in the new directory and/or to remain on the newsletter emailing list. Please Note: NO Consent forms provided by members prior to 1st Feb 2020 will remain valid beyond 30 th April 2020 & will be destroyed in accordance with Data Privacy legislation. I will then no longer be able to send you the Newsletter via post or email. I would like to get the Directory done ASAP despite the Coronavirus crisis so people can at least have up to date contact details for those who are happy to be contacted by other members of the congregation and/or Revd. Jane. NB The new Directory will only be available to those people whose contact details are included in it in order to comply with Data Privacy laws. Please note that a charge will be required for each copy of the directory as a contribution towards printing costs (Any postage costs will also need to be paid, please). Any surplus donations will be donated to Church Funds.

If you have any queries about the form, feel free to contact me via phone or email, my contact details are shown in the ‘CHURCH NEWS’ item towards the back of this newsletter. Thank you. Jill

10 CORONAVIRUS INFORMATION

HOW DO YOU LOOK AFTER YOUR MENTAL WELL- BEING? (From Government website 29 th March 2020) Social isolation, reduction in physical activity, unpredictability and changes in routine can all contribute to increasing stress. Many people including those without existing mental health needs may feel anxious about this impact including support with daily living, ongoing care arrangements with health providers, support with medication and changes in their daily routines. If you are receiving services for your mental health, learning disability or autism and are worried about the impact of isolation please contact your key worker or care coordinator or provider to review your care plan. If you have additional needs please contact your key worker or care coordinator to develop a safety or crisis plan. Understandably, you may find that shielding and distancing can be boring or frustrating. You may find your mood and feelings are affected and you may feel low, worried or have problems sleeping and you might miss being outside with other people. At times like these, it can be easy to fall into unhealthy patterns of behaviour which in turn can make you feel worse. There are simple things you can do that may help, to stay mentally and physically active during this time such as:

• look for ideas of exercises you can do at home on the NHS website • spend time doing things you enjoy – this might include reading, cooking, other indoor hobbies or listening to favourite radio programmes or watching TV • try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, drink enough water, exercise regularly, and try to avoid smoking, alcohol and drugs • try spending time with the windows open to let in the fresh air, arranging space to sit and see a nice view (if possible) and get some natural sunlight, or get out into any private space, keeping at least 2 metres away from your neighbours and household members if you are sitting on your doorstep Constantly watching the news can make you feel more worried. If you think it is affecting you, try to limit the time you spend watching, reading, or listening to media coverage of the outbreak. It may help to only check the news at set times or limit this to a couple of times a day. Try to focus on the things you can control, such as your behaviour, who you speak to and who you get information from. Every Mind Matters provides simple tips and advice to start taking better care of your mental health.

If you are struggling with your mental health, please see the NHS mental health and well-being advice website for self-assessment, audio guides and tools that you can use. If you are still struggling after several weeks and it is affecting your daily life, please contact NHS 111 online. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111.

11 CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) GUIDANCE FOR CHURCHES Friday 27 th March (From Jane)

Following the Prime Minister’s announcement of 23rd March, the Archbishops have written to clergy in support of the measures , requiring that churches must now close both for private worship and public services. Our church buildings are therefore now closed for public worship, private prayer and all other meetings and activities except for vital community services until further notice. We are aware this is a very difficult time and will prompt a number of further questions. The FAQs below will be regularly updated, so please do keep checking back. When major changes are made we will publish updated through the national Church’s social media accounts. Live streaming of services is more important than ever and is permissible from homes. We encourage us all to consider how we can be as creative as possible with streaming services and other resources. There are many, many fantastic examples of churches and clergy using technology to reach and engage communities. Read more guidance here . Live streaming should be operated by the person presenting or a member of their household. External personnel should not move between households to facilitate. Those wishing to live-stream via platforms such as Facebook and YouTube should be covered by the existing licensing agreements in place with those platforms. Please ensure you follow the terms of use and copyright requirements of each respective platform.

Digital resources What is currently available? There are a range of new and existing Christian resources available for people to engage with at this difficult and challenging time in the life of the nation and the world:

 Weekly service broadcasts- these be made available each Sunday through the Church's Facebook page .  Time to Pray app- everything you need for Prayer During the Day, with variations according to the day of the week and the season of the Church’s year. Download for free .  Daytime prayer and Night prayer service audio- building on the existing daily prayer feed , this includes daytime prayer and night prayer for each day . It will be available as a downloadable app in the coming weeks.  Live streaming services from churches - AChurchNearYou.com now lists hundreds of churches offering livestreams of services from across the country. Churches need to add the 'Livestream' tag to their services and events that will be broadcast. Remember to add into the description how people can watch this. You add a link to the platform you're using to stream, such as your Facebook Page or YouTube Channel. Find out more about live streaming services and events .  Increasing the number of training webinars- to help churches stream sermons, events and make the most of digital platforms. Sign up for free .  #LiveLent: Care for God's Creation - the Church of England's Lent campaign for 2020. With weekly themes shaped around the first Genesis account of creation, it explores the urgent need for humans to value and protect the abundance God has created. This daily audio content is available via the app and daily emails. Sign up for free . (CONTD. ON NEXT PAGE) (CONTD. FROM P.P.)  The BBC's Daily Service and Sunday Worship- radio programmes will be using some of the themes from #LiveLent as part of their broadcasts .  Prayer for the day- each day the Church of England publishes audio and text of the Prayer for the Day .  Smart speakers– daily prayer and #LiveLent audio content can be accessed via our smart speaker apps .  Mental health reflections – 13 daily reflections that seek to provide hope, reassurance and comfort. We have also published five tips to help tackle loneliness and isolation. (Jane recommends these. Do download them from the Church of England site)

WHAT WILL BE DEVELOPED IN THE WEEKS AHEAD? In the days and weeks ahead, we will continue to significantly expand our output:  More video content – this will include video services and more films for Holy Week and Easter. In addition, we will make Holy Week audio content available.  A series of new reflections from Easter Day onwards – work is underway on an updated app, audio and email resources. More details to follow soon. Alongside the use of audio, app, smart speakers and social media, one of the main principles we are working to is to make as much as possible available in simple downloadable and printable formats for those who can’t easily access the technology.

PRAYER AND LITURGY A new page has been created containing:  Prayers and intercessions for personal or group use  Special prayers for use if it isn’t possible to meet in church  A simple form of prayer for the morning and evening, which can be downloaded, printed, and shared with those remaining at home or who are unable to access the Internet. These resources are offered to help those who are struggling to find words at this difficult and stressful time, and to enable Christians to worship in solidarity with one another even if it is not possible to gather in church.

TO THOSE WHO ASK WHERE IS GOD IN ALL THIS, I POINT TO:

* all the wonderful NHS staff who are going above and beyond the call of duty by risking their own lives to help others in need; * to the hundreds of thousands of people who have volunteered to help the NHS however they can; * to the other emergency services & military who have taken on extra, perhaps unfamiliar, duties to help; * to the community volunteers helping the housebound and vulnerable; What selfless heroes they all are & their actions move me to tears of gratitude. My thoughts & prayers are with them all and with the loved ones of those who have perished but I also cling to the knowledge that Easter is a time of hope and renewal and that God is with us.
