What a Pro Knows: Playing to Win

By Christine Louise Hohlbaum
2016

Tamika Catchings is a retired professional basketball player. She spent her entire 15-year career with the Indiana Fever, a women’s American basketball team. In this informational text, Christine Louise Hohlbaum discusses Catching’s life and accomplishments. As you read, take notes on what challenges that Catchings faced growing up.

[1]

Olympic gold medalist Tamika Catchings is a star both on and oA the court. The daughter of NBA player Harvey Catchings is a Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) All-Star. She is also the creator of a foundation that helps children. It may surprise some people to know Catchings was born partially deaf.1 She says that’s exactly what motivated her to become the star she is today.

Meeting the Challenge

Because she was hard of hearing, Catchings could not speak well, and she had to wear hearing aids. Her classmates teased her constantly. She would run home from school and hide in her room for hours. “I cried and prayed a lot,” she admits.

Catchings spent a lot of time at school playing basketball. She was good at it and she worked hard. She worked hard on her class subjects, too. She began to dream of a career in sports.

“Being good in sports [and at school] was my challenge to those who made fun of me,” she says. “People… couldn’t say that I wasn’t smart, and they couldn’t challenge me on the court, ?eld, or wherever. That was my challenge to them.”

[5]

Catchings knew from visiting her father’s practices how much hard work it took to be a pro basketball player. But she knew what she wanted and was willing to work for it. The fact that there was no professional women’s basketball team at the time didn’t stop her from reaching for her goal. She just thought she would have to join a men’s team. Then in 1996, the WNBA was formed.

Today, Catchings plays for the Indiana Fever. She does not wear her hearing aids on the court. She does wear them when she speaks publicly and whenever else she thinks she needs them. She travels the world to play basketball and to speak out on behalf of hard of-hearing people.

1. lacking the ability to hear, or having a di@cult time hearing

Catchings’s dedication2 to her family is constant. “There were plenty of times that I wanted to give up, but my family was there to support me to strive for bigger and better things,” she says. “Giving up was not an option.”

Day 1:
Serious Snow Storm!

People who have lived in the southern part of the United States most of their lives have not experienced a sever snow storm. These storms, called blizzards, are as powerful and dangerous as hurricanes are to the southern states. However, instead of heavy rainfall, blizzards drop layers of snow and sleet that can cover cars and trap people in their homes. One particular blizzard that created much devastation to the northern united states was the blizzard of 1940. The day starts off warm and sunny so folks never expected a snow storm would come. By the end of the day, there were train wrecks with sunken ships, and people trapped in their cars, boats and homes. The Blizzard of 1940 surprised everyone with her frigid fury. There was snow everywhere! Thankfully, with weather forcast today, people have a better chance of being prepared for storms like these.

Zoos

Its fun to visit the local zoo with friends and family. Along with witnessing how monkeys giraffes, and tigers interact with one another, visitors get a chance to feed wild animals. If their lucky, they’ll also see endangered animals and learn how scientist are working hard to keep them around. But zoos have come a long way in developing how they care for their animals.
In the early 1800s, zoo animals were placed in small cages without other animals to keep them company. They often did not recieve the wright nourishment. As a result, many animals dyed from lack of space, interaction with other animals, and malnutrition.
Zoos today have improved tremendously from the zoos of the past. Animals are now able to rome free and play with other animals. They are kept busy with activitys while people admire them from afar. In addition, zoo keepers know how to make sure the animals are fed the meals they need in order to stay happy and healthy.

3 WAYS TO LEARN ABOUT
CONSUMER POWER

by Amanda Oliver

Text adapted from “4 Impactful Ways to Teach Kids About Consumer Power” by Amanda Oliver, 2014. Used with permission.

This text explains how to make better choices the next time you buy something.

As you read, highlight ways to make a positive difference when choosing what to buy.

What is consumer power? Think about your favorite store, toy, or food. The ability to decide what you and your family buy is called consumer power. By buying certain products instead of others, you can help make a positive difference in the world.

  • How can you become a more conscious
  • consumer?

1. At the Shop

Every time you have a say in which products you buy, you are exercising your buying power.

CHOOSE PRODUCTS WITH LESS PACKAGING

Once upon a time, the world believed that extra packaging was a sign of quality and importance.

We now know that packaging is mostly waste. Next time you look at a product, look at the package it comes in.

aware using

Does a single pen really need all of that packaging? Does your new toy really need that huge box?

Thinking about these questions can help us cut down on waste.

BUY FSC PAPER PRODUCTS

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an organization that makes sure wood and paper products come from forests that are responsibly managed. It is easy to check for the FSC label on pencils and paper. By looking for this label, you are exercising your buying power. You have a choice in what you buy and where the products come from.

2. The Source

Do you know where your food comes from? How about your favorite toys?

Your favorite snacks don’t come from the aisles of the grocery store. Your favorite toys don’t come from Target or Toys R Us. Learning about where our products really come from can help us make decisions.

VISIT A LOCAL FARM

You can visit a local farm to learn more about where our food comes from and what is healthy to eat.

SUPPORT LOCAL FOOD PRODUCERS

A lot of trucks are needed every day to move vegetables and fruits from farms to grocery stores. This is a big problem! These trucks release carbon dioxide and other harmful gases into the air.

That is why you should purchase food

  • items from local
  • producers. Look for

farmer’s markets or grocery stores that carry local products.

person or company that makes or grows Local (adjective): from a certain area or neighborhood, usually one that is close by

3. Believe in your Power

You have the power to change the neighborhood and world you live in. The choices you make as a consumer can make a difference. They can change the future of our planet for the better.

Singer Committee Members, Natasha Brison Paul J. Batista Tommy J. Curry Head of Department, Melinda Sheffield-Moore May 2019 Major Subject: Kinesiology Copyright 2019 Justin R. Garner ABSTRACT Professional athletes are paid for their labor and it is often believed they have a weaker argument of exploitation. However, labor disputes in professional sports suggest athletes do not always receive fair compensation for their contributions to league and team success. Any professional athlete, regardless of their race, may claim to endure unjust wages relative to their fellow athlete peers, yet Black professional athletes’ history of exploitation inspires greater concerns. The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to explore and trace the historical development of basketball in the United States (US) and the critical role Black males played in its growth and commercial development, and 2) to illuminate the perspectives and experiences of Black male professional basketball players concerning the role the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA), collectively considered as the Players Association for this study, played in their welfare and addressing issues of exploitation. While drawing from the conceptual framework of anti-colonial thought, an exploratory case study was employed in which in-depth interviews were conducted with a list of Black male professional basketball players who are members of the Players Association.

THE AMBIVALENT LEGACY OF THE 1977 NBA FINALS Roy E. Brownell II* NASSH Conference Panel Presentation “Basketball in Transition: Globalization, Culture, and Historical Memory” May 25, 2019 INTRODUCTION After several up-and-down years, the NBA seemed at last to have turned the corner after the 1977 NBA Finals.1 The series, which saw the Portland Trail Blazers defeat the Philadelphia 76ers, had achieved unprecedented television ratings. It was the capstone on a year that had witnessed record attendance in both the regular season and playoffs,2 the successful merger with the rival ABA and the settlement of the longstanding Oscar Robertson labor litigation.3 The series itself had presented a classic contrast between the team-focus of Portland and the individual talent of Philadelphia.4 Moreover, the series served as a coming out party of sorts for the league’s two most marketable players: Julius Erving and Bill Walton.5 The two seemed to have had the potential to create a proto- “Magic”-Bird rivalry.6 One star was African-American, was the league’s most exciting player, and was polished and at ease with the media and the public. The other was white, was the master of fundamentals and team play, but was distant from the press and the public.7 Yet, despite these encouraging signs, the 1977 Finals would leave an ambivalent legacy. In the immediate term, the success of the Finals proved fleeting as the series itself and its participants dramatized many of the problems that would haunt the league for the next several years. In the longer term, however, the 1977 Finals and its participants also planted the seeds for the league’s redemption and helped usher in the modern game: how it is played, how it is marketed and how it became widely popular.

Name: Class: What a Pro Knows: Playing to Win By Christine Louise Hohlbaum 2016 Tamika Catchings is a retired professional basketball player. She spent her entire 15-year career with the Indiana Fever, a women’s American basketball team. In this informational text, Christine Louise Hohlbaum discusses Catching’s life and accomplishments. As you read, take notes on what challenges that Catchings faced growing up. [1] Olympic gold medalist Tamika Catchings is a star both on and off the court. Meeting the Challenge Because she was hard of hearing, Catchings could not speak well, and she had to wear hearing aids. "Catchings wears number 24.
