She spent her entire 15-year career with the Indiana Fever, a women’s American basketball team. In this informational text, Christine Louise Hohlbaum discusses Catching’s life and accomplishments. As you read, take notes on what challenges that Catchings faced growing up. [1] Olympic gold medalist Tamika Catchings is a star both on and off the court. The daughter of NBA player Harvey Catchings is a Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) All-Star. She is also the creator of a foundation that helps children. It may surprise some people to know Catchings was born partially deaf.1 She says that’s exactly what motivated her to become the star she is today. Meeting the Challenge Because she was hard of hearing, Catchings could not speak well, and she had to wear hearing aids. Her classmates teased her constantly. She would run home from school and hide in her room for hours. “I cried and prayed a lot,” she admits. Catchings spent a lot of time at school playing basketball. She was good at it and she worked hard. She worked hard on her class subjects, too. She began to dream of a career in sports. "Catchings wears number 24. That was my challenge to them.” [5] Catchings knew from visiting her father’s practices how much hard work it took to be a pro basketball player. But she knew what she wanted and was willing to work for it. The fact that there was no professional women’s basketball team at the time didn’t stop her from reaching for her goal. She just thought she would have to join a men’s team. Then in 1996, the WNBA was formed. Today, Catchings plays for the Indiana Fever. She does not wear her hearing aids on the court. She does wear them when she speaks publicly and whenever else she thinks she needs them. Garner ABSTRACT Professional athletes are paid for their labor and it is often believed they have a weaker argument of exploitation. However, labor disputes in professional sports suggest athletes do not always receive fair compensation for their contributions to league and team success. Any professional athlete, regardless of their race, may claim to endure unjust wages relative to their fellow athlete peers, yet Black professional athletes’ history of exploitation inspires greater concerns. The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to explore and trace the historical development of basketball in the United States (US) and the critical role Black males played in its growth and commercial development, and 2) to illuminate the perspectives and experiences of Black male professional basketball players concerning the role the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA), collectively considered as the Players Association for this study, played in their welfare and addressing issues of exploitation. While drawing from the conceptual framework of anti-colonial thought, an exploratory case study was employed in which in-depth interviews were conducted with a list of Black male professional basketball players who are members of the Players Association.

The Huskies built a 15-point lead a little more than 12 minutes into the first half, and Tennessee could never recover. The Lady Vols, who had been averaging 80 points per game, took 13 min- utes to reach 10 points in the national title game. The Huskies were led by the Final Four’s most outstanding player, Shea Ralph, who set the tone for her team defensively with six steals and added 15 points and seven assists to the victory. Connecticut earned its second national title five years to the day after its first championship win in 1995. The Huskies finished the season with a 36-1 record and avenged their only loss of the sea- son at the hands of the Lady Vols, February 2, 72-71. All-Tournament Team: Ralph was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Sue Bird, Svetlana Abrosimova and Asjha Jones. Tennessee’s Tamika Catchings was also honored.
