Cheng San Public Library

Cheng San Public Library was officially opened on 6 March 1997 by Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed, Member of Parliament for Cheng San GRC ( East).

The library covers an area of 1,467 square metres and is situated within the Mall which is of walking distance from Hougang MRT Station. It serves residents in the North East areas of Upper , Hougang, and .

Features

The library boasts a comprehensive range in its Chinese collection, which comprises almost a quarter of the library’s entire collection of books. Chinese language adult fiction is especially popular among the library’s users.

Similarly, the Children’s collection, which comprises almost half the entire book collection of the library, is very popular. The library carries children’s books in the four official languages of English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil.

The Children’s section is decorated around the concept of a garden designed to pique young children’s interest and stimulate their creativity. The arching mushrooms are a source of delight to children who visit the library.

Attractive sitting furniture are also available for both children and parents to sit and read comfortably with each other.

A cosy and comfortable newspaper corner with elevated reading booths is also available for ‘early birds’ to catch their earliest news in print.

A comprehensive and neatly arranged magazine area provides easy retrieval and browsing facilities.

Design and Layout

Cheng San Public Library is one of the first in ’s network of public libraries to introduce the cluster concept in multimedia services and self-check stations. It also has multiple glass cabinets for showcasing thematic book displays.
