But after numerous iconic covers and almost 19 years at the helm of Harper's Bazaar, Glenda Bailey is stepping down as the magazine's editor-in-chief, publisher Hearst said Wednesday, January Renowned for her innovative and often playful approach, Bailey is credited by the fashion magazine with having "turned the title around to usher in a new era of success. Before taking her current role, Bailey, Harpers Bazaar was born in the UK but is now based in New York, oversaw the launch of the British edition of Marie Claire in She Harpers Bazaar on to become editor-in-chief of the title's US edition before moving to Harper's Bazaar in The covers and photo shoots produced during Harpers Bazaar tenure were renowned for their memorable imagery, whether it was Rihanna swimming with sharks, Naomi Campbell posing with an alligator or Lady Gaga appearing without makeup. She also used her platform to confront fashion media's dependence on digital Harpers Bazaar manipulation, notably running an unretouched photo of Harpers Bazaar Williams on a cover last year. An entire section of the magazine's October Harpers Bazaar was also completely free of retouched pictures. In her editor's note that month, Bailey wrote that "in a time when transparency and authenticity are valued more than ever, it seems fitting Elsewhere, she spoke out against counterfeiting, championed diversity through her "Fabulous at Every Age" franchise and was an active charity fundraiser. Last year, she was awarded a damehood by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of her contributions to the journalism, fashion and charity sectors, as well her role in the UK government's "Great Britain" promotional campaign. She also received the prestigious Harpers Bazaar des Arts et des Lettres from the French government in Swartz described Bailey as "a powerful voice for fashion innovation around the world," while president of the company's magazines division, Troy Young, said that "her mark on the Bazaar brand is indelible and Harpers Bazaar contributions immeasurable. Speculation that Bailey would leave the position predate Wednesday's announcement. Speaking to Women's Wear Daily about the decision, the veteran editor revealed that she had considered stepping down two years ago, when the magazine had marked its th Harpers Bazaar.     Photographs by the Influential American Art Director Henry Wolf 1925-2005 16 September - 22 October, 2005 Opening Thursday, 15 September, 6-8 pm New York - Howard Greenberg Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of work by Henry Wolf (1925-2005), the Vienna-born graphic designer, photographer, artist, and teacher who left an indelible mark on American pop culture in the 1950s and ‘60s. The show, organized by critic Vince Aletti, will bring together Wolf’s photographs--many never previously exhibited- -with his editorial designs for Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar, and Show as well as work by photographers Wolf used so brilliantly in those magazines, including Richard Avedon, Diane Arbus, Erwin Blumenfeld, Lillian Bassman, Saul Leiter, Marvin Newman, William Klein and others. Wolf began his run as one of the most influential and respected art directors in America with a job at Esquire, where he became the magazine’s head of editorial design at age 26. From 1952 to 1958, his youth, wit, and inventiveness energized Esquire and made it an inspiration for other professionals in the field. By September of 1958, when Wolf replaced the legendary Alexey Brodovitch as art director of Harper’s Bazaar, he was already the winner of a slew of gold medals from the Art Directors Club, whose Hall of Fame he was to join in 1980. In his brief stint at Bazaar, he worked with Avedon, Leiter, Ben Rose, and Gleb Derujinsky on some of that (over) magazine’s most strikingly original covers, but he was lured away in 1961 to join the staff of a new magazine launched by eccentric millionaire Huntington Hartford.
