The interview is with Edith R. Wyle, on March 9th, Tuesday, 1993, at Mrs. Wyle's home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. The interviewer is Sharon K. Emanuelli. This is Tape 1, Side A. Okay, Edith, we're going to start talking about your early family background. EW: Okay. SE: What's your birth date and place of birth? EW: Place of birth, San Francisco. Birth date, are you ready for this? April 21st, 1918-though next to Beatrice [Wood-Ed.] that doesn't seem so old. SE: No, she's having her 100th birthday, isn't she? EW: Right. SE: Tell me about your grandparents. I guess it's your maternal grandparents that are especially interesting? EW: No, they all were. I mean, if you'd call that interesting. They were all anarchists. They came from Russia. SE: Together? All together? EW: No, but they knew each other. There was a group of Russians-Lithuanians and Russians-who were all revolutionaries that came over here from Russia, and they considered themselves intellectuals and they really were self-educated, but they were very learned. -

Schulz Volume One: 1950-1952 Study guide written by Art Baxter Introduction America was in the throes of post-war transition in 1950. Soldiers had returned home, started families and abandoned the cities for the sprawling green lawns of newly constructed suburbia. They had sacrificed during the Great Depression and subsequent war effort and this was their reward. Television was beginning to replace the picture-less radio not to mention live theater, supper clubs and dance halls, as Americans stayed home and raised families. Despite all this “progress” an empty feeling still resided in the pit of the American soul. Psychology, that new science that had recently gone mainstream, tried to explain why. Then, Charles M. Schulz’s little filler comic strip, Peanuts, appeared in the funny pages. Schulz was born in 1922, the solitary child of a barber and his wife, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sparky, his lifelong nickname, was given to him when he was an infant, by an uncle, after the comic strip character Barney Google’s racehorse Spark Plug. Schulz had an early love and talent for drawing. He enjoyed famous comic strips like Roy Crane’s Wash Tubbs/Captain Easy (1924- 1943), the prototype of the adventure strip; E. C. Segar’s Thimble Theater (1919-1938), and its diverse cast of colorful characters going in and out rollicking adventures; and Percy Crosby’s Skippy (1925-1945) with its wise-for-his-age perceptive child protagonist. Schulz was a bright student and skipped several grades, making him the youngest and smallest in his class. -

Lunar Perturbations – How Did We Get from Goodnight Moon to Go the F**k to Sleep?: Margaret Wise Brown and Bedtime Parody Sandy Hudock Colorado State University-Pueblo From an Audi commercial to celebrating the end of the second Bush presidency to the ghost of Mama Cass presiding over a dead Keith Moon, to the ubiquity of the iPad, Good Night Moon has been and no doubt will continue to be parodied or invoked for generations to come. Songwriters reference it, the television show The Wire gives an urban twist to its constant refrain of “good night-----“ with “good night, po-pos, good night hoppers, good night hustlers…” What makes this story so much a part of the collective consciousness, a veritable cultural meme? How did Margaret Wise Brown’s life and her influence in children's publishing result in the longstanding enchantment of Good Night Moon? Recent political and cultural parodies of the go to bed genre all ultimately hearken back to this one simple story painted in green and orange, and the intrinsic comfort it provides to children as a go to bed ritual. Born in New York in 1910 to a wealthy family, Brown was a middle child whose parents’ many moves within the Long Island area required that she change schools four times while growing up, including a stint at a Swiss boarding school. As a child, she made up stories (in her family, a polite way of saying she told lies) and then challenged her siblings to look up the answers in the multi-volume Book of Knowledge, for which she later penned two entries on writing for small children. -

Regardless if the Writing Center serves mostly undergraduates or graduates, the word “edit” has largely evolved to a narrow definition of copyediting or textual cleanup done by the author at the end of the writing process. Inversely, in trade publishing, editors and agents work with writers at multiple stages of production, providing editorial feedback in the form of reader’s reports and letters. Editing is a rich, intellectual skill of critically engaging with another’s text. What are the implications of differing literacies of editing for two fields dedicated to writing production? This dissertation examines the editorial practices of three leading 20th century editors: Maxwell Perkins, Katharine White, and Ursula Nordstrom. -

Shooting the Movement: Black Panther Party Photography and African American Protest Tr a di ti o n s T.N. P h u Abstract: Although the failure of the Black Panther Party has often been attributed to the violence which consumed it, the photographic record suggests otherwise. This paper argues that the movement in fact developed a striking and self-aware protest aesthetic. Moreover, this still influential self-referential visuality emphasized the spectacular forms of defiance, contributing, in doing so, to African American traditions of protest conventionally rooted in the oral tradition. A focus on Black Panther Party photography helps account for how the rhetorical violence which focused the BPP’s protest aesthetic became complexly indistinguishable from violent realization. ANNIE LEIBOVITZ WHO IS ANNIE LEIBOVITZ? WHO IS ANNIE LEIBOVITZ? Annie Leibovitz is an American portrait photographer. She photographed John Lennon on the day he was assassinated, and her work has been used on numerous album covers and magazines. Born: 2 October 1949 (age 68) Awards: Honorary Clio Award, Glamour Award for The Visionary WHERE IS ANNIE LEIBOVITZ FROM? Waterbury, Connecticut, United States HOW ANNIE LEIBOVITZ GOT INTO PHOTOGRAPHY? During a vacation from school, Leibovitz visited her family, then living in the Philippines. She and her mother took a trip to Japan, where she bought a camera and began taking pictures. When she returned to school, Leibovitz enrolled in a night class in photography. "I was totally seduced by the wonderment of it all," she told a writer for Art News. "To see something that afternoon and have it materialize before your eyes that same day. There was a real immediacy to it. I lived in the darkroom." WHAT LOCATIONS / COUNTRIES HAS ANNIE SHOT AT? Annie Leibovitz has shot at various places in the world, one being at Buckingham Palace in the UK, as she did a photoshoot of the queen for the BBC. Leibovitz has also shot various photos for vanity fair which is based in Mayfair, London. Various photos have also been shot in the United States such as in New York where she shot in various places, such as a bar and New York skyline. WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR WORK?
