Welcome Letter from The President of the United States THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON June 17, 2005 I send greetings to those gathered for the 87th National Convention of the American Legion. For more than two centuries, members of our Nation's Armed Forces have built a tradition of honorable and faithful service. Each has answered a great call and demonstrated personal courage, love of country, and devotion to duty. Our veterans hold a cherished place in our history, and millions around the world live in peace because of their selfless dedication. Since 1919, the American Legion has worked to uphold America's founding ideals and has supported veterans and their families with a wide range of programs and services. As we continue to fight terror and advance freedom around the world, Americans are inspired by the commitment and character of our veterans. I commend members of the American Legion for your dedication to these brave men and women. Your efforts reflect the spirit of our country and honor the service of these patriots. Laura and I send our best wishes. May God bless you, and may God continue to bless America. 2005 National Convention In Hawai'i, our welcomes are as warm as our weather. Warm Island greetings to all delegates of the American Legion National Convention! We eagerly await your attendance at the upcoming 2005 American Legion National Convention in Honolulu, August 19-25, 2005, at the Hawai'i Convention Center, Where BUSINESS and Alofui Meet. HWAtf THE HAWAI'I CONVENTION CENTER Where BUSINESS and Alotifr Meet 800.295.6603 • www.hawaiiconvention.com Messages of Aloha From the Governor w On behalf of the people of Hawai'i, I send greetings of warm aloha to all who are gathered in Honolulu for The American Legion's 87th National Convention. I am delighted you have chosen our beautiful islands for your meeting site. The Aloha State greatly appreciates the tremendous sacrifices America's servicemen and servicewomen have made over the years. Therefore, it is truly an honor to host the world's largest wartime veterans organization. I invite you to discover the many wonders Hawai'i has to offer, including our ideal weather, natural beauty, wonderful beaches, majestic mountains, cultural diversity, places of historical significance and, of course, shopping and dining. Best wishes for a memorable convention and for the continued success of The American Legion. Aloha, Linda Lingle, Governor ofHawaii From the Mayor Aloha, and welcome to The American Legion's 87th National Convention. Honolulu is honored to be the host city for this very special event. I salute your outstanding organization for continuing to be an effective and respected voice for veterans, successfully representing their interests and diligently promoting patriotism and respect for our American Flag. I am confident that your governing body will carry on the proud history and fine work of the Legion. We are deeply grateful that Honolulu was selected for the National Convention. I hope that you will find the time to experience the unique culture of our people and the variety of recreational activities that our city has to offer. On behalf of the people of the City of Honolulu, I extend best wishes for a productive gathering and for an enjoyable stay on our island. From the Department Commander On behalf of The American Legion family in Hawaii, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the 87th National Convention. The last convention in Hawaii was held in 1981. The American Legion Convention Corp. of Hawaii has worked hard to make this the best and largest convention ever. During your visit, I encourage you to take time to explore some of Hawaii's many treasures. Take in some sightseeing: the \)SS Arizona and USS Missouri and the National Cemetery of the Pacific. Enjoy the aloha hospitality and its cultural activities and entertainment. I'm sure you will enjoy all that Hawaii has to offer during your stay. If you need any help, please contact a Hawaii Legionnaire. Best wishes for a successful and rewarding convention, and have a safe journey home. Aloha Harfy Pasco, Commander, Department ofHawaii 2005 National Convention Oahu is a cornucopia of historically important and culturally significant places. It might not be the biggest island in Hawaii, but opportunities abound to partake of scrumptious food, beautiful sights, unending shopping and unlimited entertaining and educational activities. Legionnaires might want to visit the USS Arizona Memorial that marks the watery grave of the sunken battleship and its crew. The USS Missouri is a favorite Pearl Harbor attraction. The USS Bowfin, which participated in nine harrowing wartime patrols, is berthed near a waterfront memorial that pays tribute to more than 3,500 submariners who died during World War II. The National Cemetery of The Pacific, or the Punchbowl as it is locally known, is one of Hawaii's most visited sites. Hawaii astronaut Ellison Onizuka is buried here, as is World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle. The U.S. Army Museum just off Waikiki Beach features a great collection of war materials, with a big focus on World War II. The exhibits also include Hawaiian weapons. The island is home to world-renowned beaches - more than 100 of them ring the 112-mile coastline - where sand is tickled by water, where lava rock is battered by frothy surf. Sailing, whale and dolphin watching, fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking and swimming are available for the adventurous who don't mind getting wet. And of course, there's the evening sun, immersing itself daily like clockwork in the welcoming Pacific waters.
