Unzen-Amakusa National Park Became One of Japan’S First National Parks Revive your zest for life in this refreshing retreat above the clouds Unzen-Amakusa In 1934, Unzen-Amakusa National Park became one of Japan’s first national parks. At the time of its 19 designation, it was comprised only of the Unzen area and known as Unzen National Park, however, in 1956 the Amakusa area was added. The park boasts spectacular landscapes, from the steam wafting from Mt. National Park Unzen to the seascapes of Amakusa which interweave islands and sea. The Unzen area is comprised of the mountainous region of the Shimabara Peninsula which consists of the Unzen volcanic group, including Mt. Fugen. From the many high vantage points there are excellent panoramic views with the sea stretching into the distance on three sides. The park tells the story of the dynamic origins of the earth and the resulting bounty of the land, and as such, Unzen Volcanic Area Global Geopark has been established on the Shimabara Peninsula, with the area within the national park as its core. The Amakusa area is an archipelago made up of 120 islands of varying sizes with diverse shorelines and seas inhabited by coral. At the heart of the Unzen area is Unzen Onsen Hot Springs, which has welcomed travelers and people of faith since ancient times to relax in its healing waters. Home to gods, Shugendo mountain asceticism, hot springs and seasonal vegetation, the mountains of佐賀県 Unzen brim with wonder. Heal your body in the hot springs gushing forth from the earth and awaken at dawn to birdsong. The majestic scenery and invigorating experiences offered by the park make this one of Japan’s original nature resorts. ■Access Nagasaki Airport Haneda Airport Nagasaki Airport Aso Kumamoto Airport 長崎県 Isahaya Bus Terminal Shimabara 熊本県 Aso Kumamoto Nagasaki Port Airport Prefecture Kumamoto Station Kumamoto Port Shimatetsu Unzen Kumamoto Bus Terminal Prefecture National park area Major road Jigoku and Unzen Expressway Onsen Hot Spring, Shinkansen Unzen City, JR 宮崎県 Nagasaki Prefecture Private railway Access route Approx. 80 min Approx. 100 min Approx. 45 min by by Shimatetsu by airplane Kenei Bus Bus Shimatetsu Nagasaki Airport Isahaya Terminal鹿児島県 Unzen Bus 1 Terminal 2 3 Haneda Airport Approx. 60 Approx. 30 min Approx. 40 min Approx. 100 min Approx. 30 min min by airport by Kumamoto by Shimatetsu by airplane by Sanko Bus limousine bus Kumamoto Port Ferry Bus Shimatetsu Kumamoto Kumamoto Shimabara Ferry Noriba Unzen Bus Airport Eki-mae Port -mae Terminal 6 Access routes are given as examples. • Territoriality by Folk Boundaries and Social-Geographical Conditions in Shinto-Buddhist, Catholic, and Hidden Christian Rural Communities on Hirado Island, Western Japan
Geographical Review of Japan Series B 92(2): 51–71 (2019) Original Article The Association of Japanese Geographers Territoriality by Folk Boundaries http://www.ajg.or.jp and Social-Geographical Conditions in Shinto-Buddhist, Catholic, and Hidden Christian Rural Communities on Hirado Island, Western Japan IMAZATO Satoshi Faculty of Humanities, Kyushu University; Fukuoka 819–0395, Japan. E-mail: [email protected] Received December 10, 2018; Accepted November 24, 2019 Abstract This article explores how the sense of territoriality and various background conditions of Japanese rural communities affect the emergence of folk boundaries, which are viewed here as the contours of residents’ cognitive territory represented by religion-based symbolic markers. Specifically, I look at how the particular social-geograph- ical conditions of different communities create diverse conceptions of such boundaries, including the presence or absence of the boundaries, within the same region. Here, I focus on three Japanese villages encompassing seven local religious communities of Shinto-Buddhists, Catholics, and former Hidden Christians on Hirado Island in Kyushu. These villages are viewed respectively as examples of contrastive coexistence, degeneration, and expansion in territoriality. Among the seven religious communities, only those believing in Shinto-Buddhism, as well as Hid- den Christianity, have maintained their folk boundaries. These communities satisfy the conditions of an agglomer- ated settlement form, a size generally larger than ten households, a location isolated from other communities within the village, and strong social integration. In contrast, Catholics have not constructed such boundaries based on their historical process of settlement. However, they have influenced the forms of Shinto-Buddhists’ territoriality, although not those of Hidden Christians.

Kikigaki 5 ( 482 to 632 ) Sayings and deeds of Lords Mitsushige and Tsunashige 482) Lord Mitsushige inherits his household in February, 1657 at the age of 26. On February 19, Okabe Naizen and Tamba-no-kami summoned Nabeshima Izumi- no-kami Naotomo to Edo Castle, and informed that Lord Katsushige was admitted to retire and that Mitsushige, his grandson, was allowed to succeed to the household of Saga Clan. On March 1 Prince Mitsushige paid a visit to the castle to express his gratitude to the Shogunate. He donated a sword inscribed with the name of Bungo Yukihira, 300 leaves of silver, 100 hundred sheets of fine silk, while Lord Katsushige offered a sword made by Sadamune and a scroll of picture with a peony design. Nabeshima Mondo, Nabeshima Nui-no-suke, and Arita Kageyu, administrative retainers, also donated ex- penses to buy horses. On January 18 a big fire broke out in Edo, burning our clan’s Sakurada residence. Prince Mitsushige moved to the Aoyama residence, then again to the Azabu residence on May 4. On May 19 a gale blew and burnt Edo Castle and many more houses, though the secondary enclosure of the castle escaped the fire. Spreading to nearly 90 km, it claimed the lives of more than 37,000 people. * Okabe Naizen and Tamba-no-kami were high ranking officials for the Shogunate. * Nabeshima Izumi-no-kami was the lord of the Kashima branch clan. 483) The era name changes from Meireki to Manji in May 1658. The lord is aged 27. Lord Mitsushige was admitted by the Shogunate to return to Saga in February, and left Edo on the last day, arriving in Saga on April 5.

Interestingly, this technology was introduced to Japan through two routes. In the late sixteenth century, at approximately the same time as the Tensho¯ embassy, which left Japan in 1582 and returned in 1590, brought movable type technology from the West, it was also introduced from the Korean peninsula through a tragic event. I have clarified what kinds of books and cultures were created by this new technology, which was introduced across the seas between East and West. I have then added a discussion of the world of Meiji, focusing on regional culture. At this time, Japan was promot- ing rapid modernization or Westernization. In Nejime, on the O¯ sumi Peninsula at the southern tip of Kyu¯ shu¯ , there was a library established for the sake of improving the education of the local residents, so as not to fall behind the trends of the new era. Considering that, perhaps, there were similar examples in Korea that transcend national boundaries, I have looked back on such achievements of our forebears as they worked towards modernization.
