Coloured’ Schools in Cape Town, South Africa
Constructing Ambiguous Identities: Negotiating Race, Respect, and Social Change in ‘Coloured’ Schools in Cape Town, South Africa Daniel Patrick Hammett Ph.D. The University of Edinburgh 2007 1 Declaration This thesis has been composed by myself from the results of my own work, except where otherwise acknowledged. It has not been submitted in any previous application for a degree. i Abstract South African social relations in the second decade of democracy remain framed by race. Spatial and social lived realities, the continued importance of belonging – to feel part of a community, mean that identifying as ‘coloured’ in South Africa continues to be contested, fluid and often ambiguous. This thesis considers the changing social location of ‘coloured’ teachers through the narratives of former and current teachers and students. Education is used as a site through which to explore the wider social impacts of social and spatial engineering during and subsequent to apartheid. Two key themes are examined in the space of education, those of racial identity and of respect. These are brought together in an interwoven narrative to consider whether or not ‘coloured’ teachers in the post-apartheid period are respected and the historical trajectories leading to the contemporary situation. Two main concerns are addressed. The first considers the question of racial identification to constructions of self-identity. Working with post-colonial theory and notions of mimicry and ambivalence, the relationship between teachers and the identifier ‘coloured’ is shown to be problematic and contested. Second, and connected to teachers’ engagement with racialised identities, is the notion of respect. As with claims to identity and racial categorisation, the concept of respect is considered as mutable and dynamic and rendered with contextually subjective meanings that are often contested and ambivalent. -

Eskom Inquiry Reference Book
ESKOM INQUIRY REFERENCE BOOK A Resource for Parliament’s Public Enterprises Inquiry Civil Society, Journalists & Engaged Citizens Version 3 October 2017 This booklet has been authored by Professor Anton Eberhard and Catrina Godinho of the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business. Research support was provided by Lauren Hermanus and Jesse Burton. It is part of the State Capacity Research Project (SCRP) - a group of academics from research institutions at the Universities of Stellenbosch, Witwatersrand, Cape Town and Johannesburg. As academics, our job is to make sense of complex situations and explain these. We are acutely aware that ongoing revelations of corruption can lead to general public fatigue but we hope that by joining the dots this booklet will contribute to the empowerment of civil society, journalists, and concerned members of the general public, so that they can follow and support the inquiry. Please contact the authors regarding the reproduction, distribution, or transmission of any part of this document and note that permission is required in the case of any intended commercial use. ESKOM INQUIRY REFERENCE BOOK In October 2017, Parliament’s Public Enterprises Committee will begin its inquiry into alleged manifestations of state capture in three of South Africa’s state owned companies (SOCs): Eskom, Transnet, and Denel. The authors of this reference book have set out to provide an independent, accessible, concise, and fact-based account of some, but not all, of the alleged instances of governance failure and -

Eff Welcomes the Public Protector's Report On
EFF WELCOMES THE PUBLIC PROTECTOR’S REPORT ON PRAVIN GORDHAN Friday, 24 May, 2019 The EFF welcomes the Public Protector’s report, in particular on Pravin Gordhan. The Public Protector found that Pravin Gordhan, whilst minister of Finance violated the constitution by irregularly approving the early retiremenof Ivan Pillay (his friend) with full pension benefits as if he had retired at the appropriate pension age of 65. The Public Protector declared that Gordhan’s actions were in violation of the Public Finance Management Act, the Government Employees Pension Act as well as the Public Protector’s Act. In essence none of the laws he used to give Pillay early retirement empower him to do so. Most importantly, he gave Pillay full pension benefits at the expense of tax payers, thus failing to protect public funds and violated the constitution as Minister of Finance. This is pure disregard of the constitution, abuse of power and maladministration. He now falls squarely in the line of many constitutional delinquents against whom chapter 9 institutions and our courts have found. There is no difference between him and Malusi Gigaba, Nomvula Mokonyane, and Bathabile Dlamini. Pravin Gordhan is a constitutional delinquent who must not be reappointed into any Cabinet and who must resign from public office in general, particularly from Parliament. No one who is willing to abuse the public office like he did, particularly at taxpayer’s expense, must be allowed to come back to parliament or be in the cabinet. If Ramaphosa appoints Gordhan to his Thuma-Mina new dawn cabinet, then we know there is no difference between him and Zuma in rewarding corrupt individuals with cabinet posts. -

Fhatuwani Thesis
CHAPTER 1 1.1 AIM, PURPOSE AND JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY This thesis attempts to reconstruct the manner and the effects of the forced removal of the Ravele community, from their historical homes in old Mauluma1 along the Luvuvhu River Valley. Luvuvhu is the name given to a river that dominates the area under discussion. The name Luvuvhu’ is retained until, it enters Kruger National Park, where the Vatsongas call it Phafuri - as the river flows through Chief Mphaphuli’s territory. After relocation, the whole area under discussion is now known as Levubu. Levubu is corruption of the word Luvuvhu by the local white farming community. Old Mauluma in the Luvuvhu valley was situated on the North Eastern part of Louis Trichardt. More or less 3000 Ravele community members were forcibly removed from their land, between 1920 and 1940 to new Mauluma or Beaconsfields.2 The removal constituted a severe crisis for the members of the community as they were taken from a rich ecological area and resettled 100 kilometres west of old Mauluma, a dry and rocky area. A study of the Ravele community’s removal from old Mauluma (Levubu area) is especially pertinent at this juncture because of the campaign by the previous owners to reclaim their land. Since the April 1994 election and the promise by the government that dispossessed people could reclaim their land, hundreds of the former Levubu residents (including Ravele community) have demanded compensation or return to their land. Not surprisingly, the campaign has the support of all those who were removed, but is viewed with suspicion by white farmers in Levubu and surrounding areas.
