It is a mountainous semi-autonomous region cold winter with a long snow bordered by Rhône-Alpes, France to the west, season and misty summer. Switzerland to the north and the region of Piedmont to the south and east. Aosta Valley has the highest peaks in the Alps: Cervino, Monte Rosa, Gran Paradiso and the king of them all, Mont Blanc, which at 15,781 feet is the highest mountain in Europe. Not only is Aosta Valley the smallest region in Italy, but with a population of about 126,933 people, it is also the least populous. Additionally, it is the only region without provinces. As the coldest region in Italy, with a bitter continental climate, the summers are cool, with an average temperature of 64-68 degrees, and very cold winters, averaging around 30 degrees, though slightly lower overall nearest the French border. Though Aosta Valley is known for its ski slopes of Cervinia, Courmayeur, and Pila, this region also offers plenty of cultural and traditional treasures.

International Snow Science Workshop Grenoble - Chamonix Mont-Blanc - 2013 The avalanche cadaster of the Valle d’Aosta Region (NW Italian Alps): the new born web portal (http://catastovalanghe.partout.it/) A. Debernardi 1*, V. Segor 2 1 Fondazione Montagna sicura, Villa Cameron, Località Villard de la Palud 1, 11013 Courmayeur (AO), Italy; 2 Ufficio neve e valanghe, Assetto idrogeologico dei bacini montani, Regione Autonoma Valle d’Aosta, Loc. Amérique 33, 11020 Quart (AO), Italy. ABSTRACT: The Region of Aosta Valley is located in the far north-western part of Italy and share borders, to the north and west, with Switzerland and France. More than 60% of its territory is above 2000 m a.s.l. of altitudes. Avalanches are natural phenomena that in the context of this mountainous region may have a significant influence on land use, on the ordinary course of human businesses and on the economic and touristic activities. That’s way it’s essential for the regional administration to have tools able to summarize, preserve and make easily accessible the historical information related to ava- lanches. After many years dedicated to organize data, the Snow and Avalanche Warning Service has reached the goal of putting on-line the avalanche cadaster, with a dedicated space on the Regione Autonoma Valle d'Aosta website (http://www.regione.vda.it/), where the public can access the infor- mation about all the documented avalanches. The web portal, developed in collaboration with the software company IN.VA. S.p.A., consists of three geonavigators that are cartographic tools allowing the users to view the avalanche limits, overlapping technical maps with orthophotomaps, and of two applications that make available all the information, alphanumeric data and images related to ava- lanches.

  • Environmental and Social Sustainability Plan
Environmental and Social Sustainability Plan Cross Country Ski World Cup Cogne - Italy 2019 January 2019, Vers.3 – COWC01 Summary 1. Introduction…………………………………………………………………………………3 2. Environmental and Social Context………………………………………………..4 3. Event……………………………………………………………………………………………7 4. Impacts: sources and aims……………………………………………………………9 5. Mitigation and compensation actions………………………………………….13 6. Conclusion …………………………………………………………………………………..15 1. Introduction This document is drafted to plan and control, from an environmental and social sustainability point of view, the forthcoming sporting event that will take place in Cogne, Aosta Valley – Italy, on the 16th and 17th of February. It will be an event of international level that will concern four Cross Country Ski World Cup competitions. The Municipality of Cogne pursues sustainability objectives, primarily in order to protect the environmental context in which it is located, and subsequently because it is a touristic resort located in the Gran Paradiso National Park. Moreover, Cogne is member of the Alpine Pearls, an association of European cooperation working on sustainable mobility. Since 2016 it is one of the 100 most sustainable destinations in the world and it is part of the top 100 Green Destinations. Consequently and connected to the above mentioned information, according to the objectives of sustainability and environmental protection posed by the aforementioned entities, this document aims to be a small road map for the event to be carried out in February: the main aim is to reduce environmental impacts as much as possible , creating at the same time an added value to the locality. This document will be gradually updated while coming close to the event dates and will be used as a monitoring tool.

  • Alpine Climbing in the Mountains of Cogne
    108. Steve Sustad starting Pitch 7 of El Cardonal (XS). (Pat Littlejohn) MARTIN GILLIE looked nice from below but turned out to be nasty and Alpine Climbing in crumbling – the rock had taken a sudden turn for the The Mountains of Cogne worse, as basalt can. After struggling for a while I realised I could swing right to reach a big wind-eroded scoop which had been invisible from below – now the way was clear to the top of the tier, above which loomed the final 50m wall. We were now three quarters of the way up the face so the desire to finish it properly up the final tier was strong, even though the terrace below it prom- ised an escape of sorts. There was a possible line straight ahead but after 15m it was blocked by a rotten overhang, and to press on into XS territory at this point would have ruined a potentially fine route. Luckily, a groove 20m to the right turned out to have better rock and better gear than had been apparent from below. It led past an overhang to an amazing ‘bell’ of rock formed where wind erosion had hollowed out material behind the hard outer layer of basalt. By striking it with a karabiner you could play different notes in different places. I took cover in a cave stance while Steve dealt with the final pitch and soon we were on the great shelf where the cliff terminates, enjoying a breeze and views of the peak and the island’s interior. The result of our efforts was El Cardonal, a 13-pitch route that was sustained but nowhere too hard, definitely a worthy objective for people wanting to experience a long, adventurous trad climb on Gran Canaria.
