After several rain outs, ARIZONA, OREGON, and UTAH all remain undefeated as both UCLA and the Ducks recorded a win against No. 22/23 Kentucky....Oregon’s Lauren Lindvall was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week after going a perfect 5-for-5 over three games for the Ducks. UCLA’s Rachel Garcia was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week and Arizona’s Dejah Mulipola was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week....Eight Conference teams head south to Palm Springs, Calif. to face multiple top-ranked teams including No. 1/1 Florida State, No. 7/8 LSU, No. 11/12 Georgia, No. 14/14 Michigan, No. 15/13 Tennessee, No. 18/18 Texas A&M, and No. 20/22 Missouri. Oregon heads across the ocean to Honolulu, Hawai’i to compete in the Rainbow Wahine Classic....Seven teams are ranked including four in the top-10 this week in the USA Softball/ESPN.com poll. UCLA is at the top at No. 4, Oregon and Washington follow at Nos. 6 and 7 respectively and Arizona remains in the top 10 at No. 9. Utah is at No. 17, Arizona State at No. 19 and California at No. 21. Currently, the (ASTM F2219) high-speed batted ball test (100 mph) is used for determining bats allowed to be used in WBSC World Championships, World Cups and the Olympic Games. Also included are the qualifying tournaments for both the World Championships and the Olympics. August 31, 2008, marked the end of the period during which bats that complied with the previous WBSC bat performance standard (1.20 BPF) were permitted to be used in WBSC play. Bats containing the ISF 1.20 BPF stamp are NOT permitted in WBSC play. All bats must contain the ISF 2005 bat stamp or the WBSC Certified stamp. The championship has been in Oklahoma City since 1997.” BRACKET HISTORY 1981 NCAA Executive Committee approved a 16-team bracket. 1982 First Division I Women’s Softball Championship; sponsorship of Division I women’s softball totals 143 teams. 1988 Tournament expanded to 20 teams. 1994 Tournament expanded to 32 teams; sponsorship of Division I women’s softball reaches 192 teams. 1997 Top eight teams seeded at beginning of tournament. No. 1 through No. 8 seeds selected to different regional sites. 1999 Championship bracket expanded to 48 teams. 2003 Championship bracket expanded to 64 teams. Regional sites selected two weeks prior to bracket announcement for first time. 2004 Increase in seeds from 8 to 16. 2005 Championship expanded from two weekends to three weekends. Regionals were played at 16 campus sites, and eight super regionals were played Memorial Day weekend, featuring two teams at each site in a best-of-three series. WCWS Championship Finals consisted of best-of-three series. 2014 The number of automatic qualifications increased from 31 to 32 with the addition of the American Athletic Conference. The West Coast Conference also earned a bid and replaced the Pacific Coast Softball Conference. 2017 Super Regionals moved to a three-day format. Previously, the Super Regional games were conducted over a two-day period, with the third if necessary game played as a part of a doubleheader on the second day.
