Rien n'est mieux prouve, cependant, et c'est une idee a laquelle il faudra se faire. Charcot (1885) Hysteria is among the oldest recorded diagnostic categories of neurosis. Through a long and exotic evolution, the popular and medical understanding of the disorder has changed greatly. However, one feature of hysteria has remained constant: since classical times, hysteria has been understood as an affliction essentially of adult women and adolescent girls. If we know anything about the disorder, we are likely to know that it relates etymologically to the Greek word hystera or uterus. In Graeco-Roman medical literature, hysteria-or at least something that many latter-day commentators have interpreted as hysteria-was believed to develop when the female reproductive system was inactive or ungratified over time. In Plato's Timaeus and certain Hippocratic texts, we find graphic descriptions of the uterus as a restless animal, raging through the female body due to unnatural prolonged continence and giving rise to a bizarre series of symptoms, including a sensation of suffocation, heart palpitations, and loss of voice. -

Beckett’s Everyday Psychopathology: Reading Male Nervous Hysteria in Murphy Emily Christina Murphy Queen’s University Psychotherapy is an artistic profession. Samuel Beckett “Psychology Notebooks” n 23 january 1934, samuel beckett, then twenty-eight years old, Omoved from Dublin to London to undertake a course of psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic (Fehsenfeld 175). He complained of a series of “severe anxiety symptoms, which he described in his opening session: a bursting, apparently arrhythmic heart, night sweats, shudders, panic, breathlessness, and, when his condition was at its most severe, total paralysis” (Knowlson 169). His subsequent two-year course of therapy with Wilfred Ruprecht Bion, soon to make a career for himself as a leading psychoanalyst of shell shock during World War ii, allowed Beckett to work through anxieties that sprang from his relationship with his mother, his unwillingness to pursue an academic career, and his “arrogant superiority and isolation” (Ackerley and Gontarski 467). This therapy, perhaps surprisingly, was immensely successful: it turned the “arrogant, disturbed, narcissistic young man of the early 1930s” into the man “noted later for his extraordinary ESC 40.1 (March 2014): 71–94 kindness, courtesy, concern, generosity, and almost saintly ‘good works’ ” (Knowlson 173). Conversely, from 1927 to 1930, the years preceding his therapy, Beckett Emily Murphy is a came to be known as one of the foremost translators of surrealist poetry doctoral candidate at and prose. Eliot, The Waste Land, "Hysteria," "Portrait of a Lady." Published in the fall of 1922, in the Dial in New York and the Criterionin London, T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land has never failed to attract attention. Its lack of thematic clarity, fragmentary dialogues, and shifting voices and scenes soon made it a classic, and no less controversial, poem of the Modernist movement. The highly chaotic, disruptive form in whichThe Waste Land was written has since triggered the readers urge to master or make a "proper" {2} reading of it. However, even the publication in book form in December, 1922 by Boni and Liveright, in which Eliot provided notes and explained the scholarly sources and allusions he used in the poem, did not reduce its multiplicity of meaning and make it less controversial. Seeming to "offer a key to the poem and to promise a full and scientifically accurate explanation which would overcome its fragmentation," these notes reveal nevertheless that Eliot may "have been playing an elaborate and highly successful practical joke on the academic profession" (Davidson 1245). The reader's fear of the text's unruly fragmentation, which impels his/her desire to search for order and system, is counterbalanced by Eliot's fear of a "problematic," or even "dangerous" femininity. Following Harriet Davidson's advocacy for an "improper" reading, this paper aims to discuss the representation of women in Eliot's "Hysteria" and The Waste Land, and to problematize Eliots desire for a "proper" femininity. -

Writing in the 1880s, the French neurologist Jean-Marie Charcot publicized the new diagnostic category PTSD “traumatic hysteria” [1]. Charcot posited that intense fright mediated Roger K. Pitman1* through unconscious mental processes could precipitate physical symptoms [2]. In a revolutionary view of psychological trauma, Charcot regarded traumatic hysteria as stemming not from the Abstract physical effects of the traumatic accident (e.g., a railway crash), but rather from the idea his patients had formed of it [3]. The modern conceptualization of what we now call posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) originated with the European neurologists A student of Charcot’s, Pierre Janet emphasized the mental effects Jean-Martin Charcot and Hermann Oppenheim, who treated of “vehement emotion,” as stimulated by traumatic life events. I love every single one of you, thank you so much. i Abstract This dissertation aims to explore, characterise and debunk the myth of the masculine war hero through the analysis of Pat Barker’s Regeneration trilogy. It focuses on showcasing how the traditionally patriarchal society of late-Victorian and Edwardian Britain educated its youth to follow unrealistic models of masculinity which privileged the suppression of emotion and tenderness, while promoting violence. The imperial agenda during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries created a generation of males who believed in the “Great Adventure” of war and imagined it as a glorious event, where men were supposed to show their virility and honour in defence of western values. -

The novel returns to the Great War to consider notions of ‘shell shock’, attitudes towards WWI veterans, and the problems surrounding remembering past violence, but what is perhaps surprising about Another World is that it uses a Victorian storyline to address these concerns, and presents the First World War through the means of references to nineteenth-century culture. The novel returns to the Great War to consider notions of ‘shell shock’, attitudes towards WWI veterans, and the problems surrounding remembering past violence, but what is perhaps surprising about Another World is that it uses a Victorian storyline to address these concerns, and presents the First World War through the means of references to nineteenth-century culture.1 Indeed, the novel focuses on the last days of WWI veteran Geordie, who, in his approaching death, is experiencing a return of the post-traumatic symptoms he had first experienced after his return from the Front. -
