Picture: my own…..303 9 Summary This thesis examines ‘patient publications’ produced at various points in the period between 1844 and 1918 within three particular mental health hospitals in England and Scotland, in order to explore how creative expression was used by staff and patients in treatment and recovery. My analysis, based upon a body of new archival research, is structured around a collection of case studies: New Moon, the journal produced by the patients at Crichton Royal Hospital at Dumfries from 1844 until 1937; Under the Dome, the patient and staff magazine of London’s Bethlem Royal Hospital published from 1892 to 1920; and The Hydra, created by patients at the Edinburgh institution, Craiglockhart War Hospital between 1917 and 1918. By focusing on select numbers of these magazines - the first twelve issues of New Moon, the 1892 to 1903 numbers of Under the Dome, and the full catalogue of the short-lived The Hydra - in chronological order, the thesis analyses the limited runs of these magazines as diverse literary and historical objects, and explores the ways in which the titles demonstrate the development of the patient publication form. Following archival work on a range of patient publications in the period 1837 to 1995, these three publications were selected for analysis owing to their demonstration of the diversity and development of the patient publication form. The analysis of these three publications - as distinct but thematically related literary objects, and as representational of the wider chronology of the form - provides an inquiry into both the individual journals and their roles within the ‘asylum journal’ format, and also into the format itself. The thesis aims to open up discussion of ways in which patient publications demonstrate newfound emphasis in sanatoria on creative expression in mental health care during this period. The study demonstrates ways in which individual hospital’s ‘asylum journals’, as complex products and reflections of their institutions, and the different expressions

You will recognise those encouraging lines from T.S.Eliot's poem The Wasteland, published soon after the First World War in 1922.It is one of the genuinely prophetic statements of the 20th century not in the sense that it foretells things to come but in that it is a 'forth-telling' from a level of awareness of what was buried beneath the surface of a civilisation, which in the 1920's appeared to have recovered its hectic pace and gaiety but which in reality was exhausted - a wasteland.     Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland Report on announced visit to: Trystview Ward, Bellsdyke Hospital, Stirling Road, Larbert, FK5 4WR Date of visit: 31 October 2016 V3 -11/5/2016 Where we visited Trystview is a 20-bedded mental health ward for patients aged 18-65 who require intermediate care or more intensive slow stream rehabilitation. We last visited this service on 8 May 2016 and made recommendations around the following: review of the population mix and age range, adequate staff numbers, psychology, occupational therapy and physiotherapy input, consent to treatment and specified person documentation and review of annual physical health and national screening checks. On the day of this visit, we wanted to follow up on the previous recommendations and also look at how the reduction to 20 beds from 30 has affected the organisation and management of Trystview. Who we met with We met with and reviewed the care and treatment of seven patients. We spoke with the senior charge nurse and the service manager. Commission visitors David Barclay, Nursing Officer Margo Fyfe, Nursing Officer Moira Healy, Social Work Officer What people told us and what we found Trystview is now a 20-bedded unit in the grounds of Bellsdyke Hospital. There were 19 patients in the ward on the day of our visit. The bed numbers have been reduced in the last few months as patients have moved on to more suitable non-clinical long term placements in care homes and supported accommodation. The numbers of nursing staff have remained the same and there will be some redesigning of the ward to create accommodation for women with mental illness who require higher levels of support and supervision in a low secure environment.

    INTRODUCTION About these Teacher’s Notes These notes suggest practical activities to enhance student learning in the HSC Contemporary Australian theatre topic area. They also provide students with reflections on professional practice surrounding the creation of contemporary Australian theatre. The notes were originally written to support and accompany the playreading and discussion of Stolen, staged at Riverside Theatres, Parramatta, in June 2013, and were written by director Anni Finsterer. The activites at the end of these pack were part of these original notes collated by Amy Matthews. In 2016 National Theatre of Parramatta has re‐staged the work under the director Vicki Van Hout. The notes from designers and sketches have been added to incorporate information from this new production.
