Councilman Greig Smith Whereas Greig Smith was elected to Los Angeles City Council io 2003 and was re-elected io 2007. As Councilman for the 12th Distric}, Greig represented the neighborhoods of Northridge, Granada Hi1ls, Chatsworth Porter Ranch parts of West Van l~uys aud Encioo, West Hills, North Hills, Lake Balboa, Canoga Park, Reseda and Winnetka. ' Safeguardiog the quality oflife io the Northwest San Fernando Valley was the top priority for Greig's time io office. Whereas, Greig's areas offocus included improviog public safety, protectiog the environment, improviog traffic transportation and iofrastructrue, boostiog the economy and maiotaming the beauty of our neighborhoodS and na'trna! areas. Whereas, Greig's efforts to make government more accessible, efficient and accountable reflected his belief in the importance of community iovolvement. For more than 20 years, Greig was a leader io the effort to end the use of landfills io urban areas, and he was at the forefront of the movement to shut down the Sunshine Canyon landfill in Granada Hills; and Whereas Greig authored and iotroduced his RENEW LAplan io 2005. RENEW LA stands for Recoveriog Energy, Natrual Resources and Economic Benefit from Waste for Los Angeles. This 20-year blueprint will end the City's use of landfills by maximiziog recycliog and refuse, and convertiog much of the trash after recycliog that currently goes to landfills into clean electricity and valuable raw materials usmg several conversion technology facilities. It will create a new, clean, high-techriology sector with high-value jobs io Los Angeles. The RENEW LA plan exceeds the State-mandated goal of a 50percent reduction of trash going into landfills and aims for "Zero Waste" and will contribute to acliieviog the City's goal of using 20 percent renewable energy by 2017. RENEW LA was unaohnously approved by the City Council m 2006 as City Policy, and Whereas, Greig is an active member of the Board of University of Southern California of Public Policy Planning and Development. Greig currently serves on the Board of the North V alley YMCA and is an LAPD Reserve Police Officer; and Whereas Greig has been working on behalf of the Northwest San Fernando Valley for more than 25 years. He became President of the North Hills Ja.Y.cees, a community service and leadership trainiog organization, where he led community service jlrojects, iocludioglhe Jaycee-sponsored Factory ofNightroares. Few Valley residents will forget the good Innes they had at me aooual Halloween haunted-house, or the hundreds or thousands of dollars it raised for local charities; and Whereas, Greig was named Outstandiog Jaycee for the state of California and one of the 10 best Jaycees io the United States; and Whereas, Greig cut the ribbon on the new Northridge Pool after spearheading an effort to secure the $6 million necessary to replace the old Northridge Pool, whicli was damaged io the 199'1 Northridge Earthquake. Whereas, io 1973 Greig and his wife Christine started a fonnal-wear business io Northridge. During this time, Greig became an active member io the Chambers of Commerce ofNorthridge and Granada Hills. In 1976, he was named the Granada Hills Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year; and Whereas, Greig has also served many other civic groups, iocludiog serviog on the board of the Committee lnvestigatiog Vall~ Independent City/County, wliose 1'hase II report he wrote. He was also Vice Chairman of the San Fernando Valley Breakfast Forum; member of the 1984 Olympic Organiziog Committee· board member of the Granada Hills Chamber of Commerce· Legislative Chairman of the Northridge Chamber of Commerce; Chairman of the Capital Campaign advisory panel for New Horizons; and co-founder of SOLID (Supporters of Law Enforcement io Devonshire); and Whereas, Greig has served for years as a member of the board of the North Valley YMCA and was elected chainnan in 1988 and 1991. He helped lead the fundraising drive to bnild a world-class YMCA facility io the San Fernando Valley for which the North Valley YMCA named him Volunteer of the Year. He was honored io 2002 with the Nortli Valley YMCA Lifetime Achievement award, and the Metro Association ofYMCA's Golden Book for Lifetime Service to the YMCA's io the Los Angeles Area; and Whereas, after beiog deeply moved by witnessing a murder on the streets of the San Fernando Valley, Greig enrolled io the Los Angeles Police Academy io 1992 and became a Reserve Police Officer. He wanted to contribute first-hand to public safety by goiog on regnla~ patrols, and to better understand and improve public safety by working with the police departruent and the commumty; and Whereas, Greig patrolled io the Valley's Devonshire Division, and was named Reserve Officer of the Year in 1996. Currently, he serves as a Reserve Officer at LAPD Detective Headquarters io the Robbery Homicide Division, Cold Case Umt, working on unsolved crimes; and Whereas, Greig maintains his strong commitment to public safety and io 2005 authored a plan to hire 278 new Los Angeles police officers without raismg taxes, and made sure that new police and fires statiOns were built and older ones refUrbished io the 12th District; and Whereas, Greig has helped secure over $I million to build the new "Councilman Greig Smith LAPD Devonshire Area Youth Center" wliich broke ground io 2008 io Northridge. The center is the headquarters of the LAPD Devonshire PALS (Police Activity Leagne Supporters) and provides much-needed alternatives to gangs and crime for local at- risk youth, iocluding mentoriog, education and trainiog, and sports and recreation activities; and Whereas, a native son of Southern California, Greig grew up io Whittier where he met and later married his high school sweetheart Christioe. Soon after marryiog, Greig and Christioe moved to the San Fernando Valley, settfmg in Granada Hills, where they raised their two childfen; and Whereas, a believer io lifelong learning, Greig contioued his education to deepen and update his knowledge on some key policy issues of the San Fernando Valley. Greig studied smart growth and waste management alternattves at the University of Dortmund_, Gennany. He also studied at UCLA before earning a BA and ters Degree at the University of Southern <-alifornia: June 29, 2011 ADOPTED JUN 2 9 2.0\1 lOS 1\NGEtES CITY COUNCil Form 99 CITY OF LOS ANGELES RESOLUTION BRUCE DAVIS WHEREAS, Bruce Davis joined the Academy staff in 1981, following a college teaching career; and WHEREAS, in 1989, Bruce Davis became the Academy's seventh Executive Director and in that position he was instrumental in the conversion of the Beverly Hills Waterworks into the Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study, the Academy Award's return to Hollywood, and the establishment of the Pickford Center as the new home of the Academy Film Archive; and WHEREAS, Bruce Davis is currently engaged in the organization's planning for a major museum on the art of motion pictures; and WHERAS, Bruce Davis has a Long history of outstanding service in the entertainment industry, as well as in Hollywood and the City of Los Angeles: NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that, by the adoption of this resolution, the City Council of the City of Los Angeles does hereby extend its highest regard to Bruce Davis on his distinguished career, with best wishes for happiness and good health for many years to come. Moran Serial No. 24672 WHEREAS, the greatest accolade a public servant can receive is their recognition for having served the citizens of the City of Los Angeles with dignity, integrity and pride; and WHEREAS, Lt. Martha Moran, has for twenty-six years and four months served the City of Los Angeles with dedication, devotion to duty and enthusiasm in the Los Angeles Police Department; and WHEREAS, Lt. Martha Moran, Serial No. 24672, was born in 1958 in the City of Los Angeles. She graduated from John Marshall High School in the City of Los Angeles and attended the University of California, Los Angeles for four years; and WHEREAS, Lt. Martha Moran started her career with the Los Angeles Police Department on November 19, 1984, advanced to Police Officer I in 1985, advanced to Police Officer II in 1986, advanced to Police Officer III in 1987, promoted to Detective I in 1993, promoted to Sergeant I in 1995 and promoted to Lieutenant I in 2000; and WHEREAS, Martha Moran, during her distinguished career served with honor in the following assignments: 77th Patrol, North Hollywood Patrol, Operations-South Bureau Crash as a gang officer, investigator, Robbery Apprehension Detail member and Search Warrant Team member, Southwest Area Detectives, South-Bureau Homicide, Hollenbeck Patrol, West Traffic Division as a field supervisor, bike lieutenant, and watch commander, Detective Support Division's LAPD/FBI Task Force on Violent Crime as a supervisor, Wilshire Patrol Watch Commander, and West Los Angeles Patrol Watch Commander; and WHEREAS, Lt. Martha Moran, prepared and successfully implemented two Presidential Details for former President George W. Bush, received over a hundred commendations and two Meritorious Unit Citations are a testament to her dedication and hard work; and WHEREAS, Lt. Martha Moran provided countless hours of her own time by developing and mentoring individuals seeking employment with the Los Angeles Police Department through the Candidate Assistance Program, as well as, current officers seeking promotion to the ranks of Detective, Sergeant and Lieutenant. She selflessly gave of herself with great enthusiasm; and WHEREAS, Lt. Martha Moran, expressed her love and concern to those individuals she worked with, her pets, friends, and family; father, brothers, nieces and nephew; and NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by adoption of this resolution, the members of the Los Angeles City Council do hereby commend Lieutenant Martha "Marti" Moran for her commitment to excellence and devotion to duty.
