3 LETTERS ETC.

MOBILITY SCOOTERS These mobility scooters have come in for some adverse comments in both the local and national press recently. Here in Valley Park in my opinion it is not a major problem on its own but added to the attitude of some of the other walkway users (cyclists) it can mean pedestrians need eyes in the back of their head.

For those who are unfortunate to have lost their mobility it is a lifeline to getting out and about. The drawback is that it would appear that some of the users forget that is like any other machine and when in collision can cause much damage to human body parts.

We do not need more regulation just some thought for everyone else.

Name & Address supplied

ADVANCE NOTICE As in keeping with the past the Valley Park Community Centre will be used as one of the Polling Stations for the forthcoming EU Elections.

This will mean that the main hall at the centre will not be available for the regular users on Thursday 22nd May. The meeting rooms 1 & 2 will still be in use as usual on that day.

The VPCA are sorry to our regular users for any inconvenience caused by this.

HELP TO DELIVER THE VALLEY PARK VOICE

Our regular deliverer Julia who has tirelessly delivered the VP Voice in

Catmint Close for many years will shortly be stepping down from this role.

We are looking for a new volunteer to take over.

What it entails is to drop off a copy of the Voice through letterboxes in Catmint Close (59 houses) at the beginning of each month. (Not January or August).

If you live in Catmint Close or close by, and are able to spare 20 minutes once a month to deliver this useful local community magazine then please contact John (editor) by email at [email protected] or telephone on 02380 263956.

4 NOTICES ETC.

VPCA Notice The caretaker position at the Valley Park Community centre has now been filled. Mr Steven Wall will start his duties in May and can be contacted via the Centre office.

CARS STOLEN IN BURGLARIES

Police are advising people not to leave vehicle keys in obvious places in their homes after two recent burglaries where cars have been stolen. It did not happen in Valley Park but in an area not too far away.

Burglars broke into the home through a patio door. They then stole a set of car keys before using them to steal a Mercedes CLK 220 parked on the road outside. The vehicle is worth a considerable sum of money.

Another similar burglary took place overnight and the thieves stole the key cars for an Audi A6 from the home and then took the vehicle from the drive.

Officers are advising residents to make sure keys are hidden away and also to make sure they lock doors and windows at night and also double lock UPVC doors.

5 DIAL-A-RIDE

Friends of the Parks May task is a return to Skys Wood copse to remove some more of the invasive Sycamore on Sunday 11th May.

People will remember being fascinated by the “helicopter” seed pods of the Sycamore, which, if left unchecked will establish thickets of saplings which then outcompete other tree and shrub species to form a dense canopy excluding light from the woodland understory. This then inhibits germination of other seeds, including those of native trees. This could lead to an alteration in the established woodland habitat affecting species dependent on native trees and other vegetation.

On Sunday 8th June we will be assisting countryside Officers to repair the boardwalk running across Little covert.

All are welcome to attend the above events at which all tools, gloves, training and refreshments will be provided.

6 LOCAL SPORTS EVENT

7 VALLEY PARK PARISH COUNCIL

The Valley Park Parish Council meetings are usually held on the 2nd Monday of every month (except August and January) at the Knightwood Leisure Centre at 7.30pm. The next is on Monday 12th May 2014.

The Clerk is Mr Andrew Purr; if you wish to contact him then please email if possible. Email ~ [email protected] If your enquiry is more urgent, day-time telephone number 80 695277. You can also write to him at 6 West Horton Lane, Eastleigh, SO50 8LR

The Parish Council have a web site which contains details of the councils work, minutes of meetings and a full list of the councillors and their contact details. Visit www.valleyparkparish.org

The following are extracts from the March meeting minutes:- Bus Shelters The Chairman advised that he had been successful in obtaining £2,500 towards the bus shelters and a significant discount from the suppliers which now meant the Parish Council would be installing three bus shelters for a total outlay of £5,000. Car Park Etc. The Clerk advised that he had heard from Tesco to the effect that they would be carrying out appropriate works to the car park and landscaped areas but that he was not able to get them to say when the works would be carried out. The buildings, car park and landscaped areas at Pilgrims Close were owned by Chamberlayne Estates and responsibility for repairs to the car park and surrounding areas were the responsibility of the tenant (Tesco). Belflower Way The Chairman, in his capacity as County Councillor, advised that as a result of a number of residents in Belflower Way complaining about parking on grass verges, he had arranged for posts to be installed on the verges to protect them from further damage. Wicklow Drive Play Area In his capacity as Borough Councillor, Councillor Dowden advised that the play area at Wicklow Drive had been damaged at the weekend and lots of broken glass had been strewn around the area. It was apparent that alcohol had been consumed and the Police and TVBC had been notified. Councillor Dowden and his wife had cleared the mess up. Summer in Bloom With respect to the summer in bloom event the Chairman advised that both Sally Taylor and Alan Titchmarsh were unavailable in June. The Parish Council had as yet to get a local celebrity to help with the launch this year.

8 FROM YOUR VET

Rabbits: don’t get caught on the hop!

Just like other pets, rabbits benefit from regular vaccinations and Health Checks to keep them fit and well. Did you know they can be vaccinated against two potentially fatal infectious diseases?

Myxomatosis is a viral infection spread by blood sucking insects such as rabbit fleas and mosquitoes. The virus multiplies on the skin, leading to blindness and difficulty in eating. Affected rabbits become very ill and sadly many die from this distressing condition.

Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) is another highly contagious and deadly viral disease. The virus is spread both by direct contact between rabbits, or via contaminated hutches, bedding or food. Symptoms include loss of appetite, lethargy, nose bleeds and sudden death.

Thankfully we are able to offer you protection against both of these deadly infectious diseases – please contact us now to arrange a Health Check and annual vaccination.

10th May – 18th May 2013 is Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW). For more information go to www.rabbitawarenessweek.co.uk.

10 WATER GARDEN

JOHN LEWIS PARTNERSHIP PLAYS HOST TO OPEN DAY FOR EASTLEIGH BOROUGH & MENCAP

Eastleigh Borough & Romsey MENCAP is one of the twelve charities this year to benefit from an Open Day at Longstock Park Water Garden. The Open Day takes place on Sunday, June 1 from 2.00 to 5.00pm, and proceeds will be donated to this local MENCAP charity to support their work. Registered Charity No: 263620

The Longstock Park Water Garden is part of the Estate owned by the John Lewis Partnership. The garden offers visitors the opportunity to see a wide variety of water birds, such as herons, moorhens and kingfishers, butterflies, freshwater fish and native British wild flowers. By the summer time the eighty types of water lily will mostly be in bloom, along with iris and astilbes.

Longstock also has a fine arboretum and Longstock Park Nursery boasts a large collection of unusual wall-plants, a magnificent herbaceous border and 100-yard arch twined with roses and clematis. There is also farm shop and café where visitors can relax after seeing the gardens.

“We are delighted with this new connection with the Longstock Park Water Garden. The Garden is a real treasure and we hope that people who know it, and those who have never travelled there before, will be inspired to come and have a great day out and support our work at the same time.” said Elaine Fish, Chair of Eastleigh Borough & Romsey MENCAP.

Eastleigh Borough & Romsey MENCAP is an independent charity which runs various services and clubs for people with learning disabilities who live in Eastleigh borough or Romsey. The Gardening Club in West End is where members learn about horticulture and have a chance to grow their own food. There is also an evening social club, a Basketball Club, an integrated theatre group for young adults and a walking group to encourage people to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle.

The Longstock Park Water Garden is situated north of Stockbridge, outside of Leckford village. Admission charges are £6.00 for adults and £2.00 for children aged 5 to 14 years (under 5s go free). Ample car parking. Sorry no dogs, other than registered Assistance Dogs. 11 LOCAL MAP

WOODLANDS OF VALLEY PARK (repeat from Feb. 2013) Valley Park is a mixture of residential housing and long established woodlands with some remnants going back to ancient times. The Valley Park Voice in different articles frequently mentions these woodlands by name but not every resident is familiar with their location within our area.

To try and help in this matter the map on the opposite page is published this month. This map was originally produced by local artist Ian Searle in full colour for the Friends of the Parks welcome to Valley Park leaflet. With the VP Voice only being a black and white magazine the contrast on the map is not as clear as it would be liked.

The names of the woodlands within our area are Zionshill Copse, Badgers Copse, Tredgoulds Copse, Skys Wood, Clothiers Copse, Knightwood, Small Profits Wood, Titlark and Little Covert.

Just outside our boundary are Lower Flexford, Ramalley Copse and Great Covert.

The dark lines on the map are the footpaths through the woodlands; a few are public rights of way but most are just permissive footpaths for the public to use.

VACANCY FOR CLUB CO-ORDINATOR AT THE CHILL OUT CLUB

The Chill Out Club is a social club for adults with learning disabilities, run by Eastleigh Borough and Romsey MENCAP.

It is held each Monday evening in an Eastleigh town centre pub. It was set up to provide unstructured social time because adults with learning disabilities said they rarely had social time with friends. Club members enjoy chatting, listening to music, having a drink or a meal, dancing, playing pool or card games and generally chilling out.

We are always looking for volunteers to join the Club to mix with the members and to make friends. We also have a paid position on offer – Club Co-ordinator. Professional or personal experience of supporting people with learning disabilities is essential for this role.

The Club Co-ordinator is the person who ensures that club night runs smoothly, that people who attend are signed in and that they are supported in whatever they wish to do during the evening. The Club Co- ordinator is also responsible for line managing the club helper and volunteers, dealing with any problems, monitoring safety issues and reporting on progress within the Club. This role is for two hours every Monday.

Come and help us to enhance the lives of people with learning disabilities in the Eastleigh and Romsey areas.

For further details about this position or to volunteer, contact Michelle Bonnel, Development Officer, on 023 8048 3471 or email to [email protected]

16 WORLD WAR ONE

PAYING TRIBUTE TO WW1 VOLUNTEERS

To mark the upcoming centenary, the British Red Cross is digitising the records of all who volunteered during the First World War – that's almost a quarter of million people.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the information will be made available to the public for the first time.

Work will soon begin to digitise thousands of index cards stored at UK Office. The entire online archive will be ready in time for the centenary celebrations.

Leading up to the First World War, many voluntary aid detachments were formed. These brave volunteers( known affectionately as VADS) went on to help thousands of causalities, often putting their own lives at risk.

Fittingly, the Red Cross now plans to recruit another 100 volunteers to help with the £80,000 digitisation project.

Famous Names

The index card list includes some very interesting names from author Agatha Christie, novelist and poet Naomi Mitchison, to writer and feminist Vera Brittain.

Phil Talbot, director of communications, said: “All these volunteers – whether they worked in auxiliary hospitals, convalescent homes or drove ambulances – played a vital role during the war.

The index cards are a unique source of historical information. As we approach the centenary, we believe this is a fitting way to pay tribute to those who gave their time in non-military service.”

19 RENTAL PROPERTY

What do Tenants really want from a rental property? It is important for Landlords to have a good understanding of what tenants look for when renting a home so that they can acquire, furnish and price their portfolio to meet these needs.

CONVENIENT LOCATION This point is crucial for tenants. This is primarily close to motorway links, railway stations and local bus routes. Tenants like to have local amenities such as shops, and leisure facilities.

GOOD SCHOOLS Unsurprisingly families with children want to be close to good schools in popular residential areas with other families.

MORE SPACE In terms of the property itself having more space is desirable to a lot of tenants. This involves bigger living spaces and in particular bedrooms with enough space for bedroom furniture. Students or sharers look for equal size bedrooms and multiple bathrooms.

SAFETY Safety is high on requirements when tenants are considering a prospective area and property together with noise from neighbouring properties and heavy traffic.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY This is in regards to household bills and in particular how expensive it is to heat the property.

WELL PRESENTED AND MAINTAINED PROPERTY. Tenants want a well presented and maintained property with no signs of damp and mould. They want to know that someone is on hand that they can contact with any issues and receive prompt replies.

Our advice to Landlords would always be to research the local rental market thoroughly before purchasing an investment property together with having a clear decision on the type of tenant you are looking for whether it be a family, students or sharers and prepare and market your property to these tenants.
