Art History Notes: Impressionism (1860 – 1900) Impressionism (1860 – 1900) Art History Notes: Impressionism (1860 – 1900) Impressionism (1860 – 1900) Impressionism –Impressionists used Scientific divisionism (1860 – 1900) and tried to paint reflected light as it truly is. –They were primarily concerned with the modern in subject matter. –Although there were many impressionists, the group included: Edouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, Edgar Degas, Pierre-August Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Mary Cassatt, and Claude Monet. Claude Monet • Claude Monet (1840 –1926 ) (1840 –1926 ) – From Impression Sunrise’s title, art critic Louis Leroy coined the term "impressionism". – In the 1880s Monet began "series" painting — paintings of one subject in varying light and viewpoints. His first series is of Rouen Cathedral from different points of view and at different times of the day. – Monet was exceptionally fond of painting controlled nature — his own garden, his water lilies, his pond, and his bridge. Monet Impression Sunrise 1874 Monet La Promenade 1875 • Pissarro, (1836 – 1903) Camille Pissarro – His work used the spontaneity (1836 – 1903) common in impressionist work. – Borrowed the pointillism of Seurat in the form of “scientific” divisionism. – Pissarro was the oldest of the group of artists. Pissarro (1836 – 1903) Pissarro (1836 – 1903) • Berthe Morisot (1841 –1895) Berthe Morisot – Morisot, along with Camille 1841 –1895 Pissarro, was one of only two artists whose work exhibited in all of the original impressionist shows. – Like true impressionists, Morisot painted what she saw in her immediate, everyday life: women, children, and domestic scenes. Berthe Morisot 1841 –1895 Berthe Morisot 1841 –1895 • Cezanne, Paul (1839 – 1906) Paul Cezanne – While studying under Pissarro, (1839 – 1906) Cezanne painted in the Impressionist style from 1862 – 1865. – Cezanne diverged from impressionism in 1880 to develop his own style and become the “master at Aix.” – Developed the planar analysis and the effort to shoe objects in the round that the cubist took to an extreme..

For our purpose, we collected 12,431 landscape paintings by 1,071 artists assigned to 18 61 nationalities from WA, and 3,610 landscape paintings by 816 artists assigned with 20 nationalities from WGA. While the 19 overall number of paintings from WGA is relatively smaller than from WA, the WGA dataset has a larger volume of paintings 20 produced before 1800 CE. Therefore, we utilize both datasets in a complementary way. 21 As same paintings can be included in both datasets, we carefully constructed a unified dataset by filtering out the duplicate 22 paintings from both datasets by using meta-information of paintings (title, painter, completion date, etc.) to construct a unified 23 set of painting images.     Harn Museum of Art Educator Resource Monet & Impressionism About the Artist Claude Monet was born in Paris on November 14, 1840. He enjoyed drawing lessons in school and began making and selling caricatures at age seventeen. In 1858, he met landscape artist Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) who introduced him to plein-air (outdoor) painting. During the 1860s, only a few of Monet’s paintings were accepted for exhibition in the prestigious annual exhibitions known as the Salons. This rejection led him to join with other Claude Monet, 1899 artists to form an independent group, later known as the Impressionists. Photo by Nadar During the 1860s and 1870s, Monet developed his technique of using broken, rhythmic brushstrokes of pure color to represent atmosphere, light and visual effects while depicting his immediate surroundings in Paris and nearby villages.     Non-Photorealistic Rendering of Images Work Division This project has been dealt with in three phases- Phase 1 Identifying explicit features Phase 2 Verification using viewers Phase 3 Technology(Coding) Phase 1 In this phase we tried to identify the explicit features in a group of paintings belonging to the same period and/or to the same artist. Following are the styles we implemented using image processing tools Fauvism Pointillism Cubism Divisionism Post Impressionism(Van Gogh) Phase 1 Fauvism The subject matter is simple. The paintings are made up of non-realistic and strident colours and are characterized by wild brush work. Phase 1 Pointillism We noticed that the paintings had a lot of noise in them and it looked like they were made by grouping many dots together in a proper way. There’s no focus on the separation of colours. Phase 1 Cubism It looked as if the painting was looked through a shattered glass which makes it look distorted. Phase 1 Divisionism The paintings are made up of small rectangles with curved edges each with a single colour which interact visually. Phase 1 Post Impressionism (Van Gogh) These paintings have small, thin yet visible brush strokes. They have a bright, bold palette. Unnatural and arbitrary colours are used. Phase 2 In this phase we verified the features we identified in phase 1 with other people We showed them a group of paintings belonging to a certain era and/or an artist and asked them to write down the most striking features common to all those paintings.     Crystal Thomas Art History Paper Impressionism through the eyes of Edouard Manet and Claude Monet Impressionism is a movement that had a major impact in France during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. There is no exact date for the beginning of this movement. Louis Leroy, an art critic, gave this period its name when he went to an independent exhibition and came across Claude Monet's Sunrise. He said it looked impressionistic, meaning not finished. Impressionists liked to be called Independents. During this time, being called an Impressionist was not a good thing. Impressionistic works were not accepted in the world of art at this time, and art critics were referring to these painters as being lazy. Most of the public did not support Impressionism. People wondered why the artists were not finishing their brush strokes and they did not like the colors being used. Among some of the Impressionist painters are Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, and Camille Pisarro. Characteristics of this movement include noticeable brush strokes that are not blended together, applying the paint in a thick, impasto style, and mixing the colors right on the canvas. Some Impressionists like to take an optical approach to painting and place the hues right next to each other on the canvas. This allows the eyes to do the mixing. Optical color mixing makes paintings look lighter than if the colors were mixed, and gives the paintings the effect of being in motion. Impressionists were interested in painting the everyday world around them.

COURSE OBJECTIVES AND DESCRIPTION The objectives of the course are as follows: (1) to provide students with a comprehensive, theoretical introduction to the visual arts; (2) to develop skills of visual analysis; (3) to examine various media used by artists; (4) to introduce students to methods of interpretation; and (5) to develop skills in writing about art. Throughout the course we will keep in mind the following two statements: Pierre Auguste Renoir’s reminder that, “to practice an art, you must begin with the ABCs of that art;” and E.H. Gombrich’s insight that, “the form of representation cannot be divorced from its purpose and the requirements of the society in which the given language gains currency.” Among the themes and issues we will examine are the following: balance, shape and form, space, color, conventions, signs and symbols, representation, reception, and interpretation. To do this we will look at many different types of art produced in several historical epochs and conceived in a variety of media. Whenever possible we will examine original art objects. Art 150 is a foundation course that serves as an introduction for further work in studio art and art history. A three-hour course, Art 150 satisfies the fine arts requirement. Enrollment is limited to first- and second-year students who are not expected to have had any previous experience with either studio or art history.

Your Studio Work must show your personal interests and artistic skills through a range of different media and techniques. Investigation Workbooks (IWBs): 40% Investigation Workbooks are like sketchbooks, but so much more! Your IWBs will contain written notes, photos, exhibition leaflets, postcards, sketches, experiments with different media, written analysis of artworks, brainstorms, as well as more ‘finished’ drawings and paintings. You can basically put anything you want into your IWB as long as it supports the development of your artistic ideas and skills. Your IWB is the ‘net to catch your ideas’ and will be a great support in your studio work. You will need to complete 5 or more IWB pages each week. Most of this will be done in your study periods or at home. Some weeks you will be able to do more than 5 pages because of your wonderful ideas. Excellent – but that does not mean the next week you do not have to do any! Holidays are a great opportunity to collect information, sketch, record and develop ideas, especially if you are in another country. By the end of the course, you should have at least two thick IWBs completed.     Before starting… a few short definitions What is an artistic movement? Each artistic movement corresponds to a precise historic period. Literature or fine arts more particularly belong to the history in which artists find their inspiration and who themselves influence history. A movement can propose: A new vision of art A new aesthetics A vision of society which is questioned through art An artistic movement is not restricted to a region or a country but it can spread from a continent to the whole world. The borders between movements are often blurred: they follow or oppose each other, sometimes they overlap. An artistic movement can be initiated by one or several artists who can produce a manifesto about it or by a critic, a journalist or a historian who writes a definition which sets it apart from other contemporary works. School or movement? A school is a voluntary gathering of artists and authors who share the same ideas and the same aesthetic project. A movement is an ideological community with a wider geographical range which is established a posteriori, usually by an art critic. What is art? It is difficult to define art. Here are some guidelines for reflection. How does a work become “a work of art?” Are there special criteria? A work reaches the status of “work of art” through a consensus and recognition by the institutions. “The authentic work of art is the one which is recognized as such and for which its creator deserves to be recognized as an artist. Thus, they are both recognized by public opinion which is itself orientated by experts’ judgment, a legitimate instance of legitimation” Pierre Bourdieu wrote.

    LONGING AND BELONGING: FRENCH IMPRESSIONISM AND JEWISH PATRONAGE Veronica Grodzinski Financial Times journalist Rebecca Rose quoted Melanie Clore on the sale of Impressionists at Sotheby’s in London on June 2006: The Impressionist and modern art fi eld is still a growth area and new money is being funneled directly into it. Artists like van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne, Matisse, Degas, Modigliani and Chagall are considered the ‘blue-chip brigade’, which command the highest prices and biggest international interest. Equally, the blue chip brigade is owned, sold and bought by only a handful of the world’s wealthiest buyers and collectors that form an exclusive club of some 20 patrons worldwide.1 Melanie Clore is the [ Jewish, by co-incidence] Deputy Chairman of Sotheby’s Europe Division and the Chairman of the Impressionist and Modern art market worldwide and thus one of the most knowledge- able voices on the subject. Clore’s assessment of twenty Impressionist clients worldwide is most surprising when compared to the number of early Jewish patrons in Republican France and Imperial Germany. What is remarkable is that a small circle of Jewish patrons were vision- aries as far back as a century ago and that the Impressionists circle has not widened since its early patronage around 1900. Why did a ‘small exclusive club’—to use Clore’s terminology—of some twenty-two German Jews collect French avant-garde Art at a time when most European collectors shunned it? Why did a circle of German Jewish patrons “collect against the grain” at a time when the majority of German Jews wanted to assimilate and integrate into majority society? However, their enthusiasm for French Impression- ism resulted in the astonishing fact that of all French modernist art collectors in Wilhelmine Germany, 85% were Germans Jews.

    Seurat and Matisse: Influence, Tradition, and the Legacy of Divisionism By: Justin Earp Faculty mentor: Seth McCormick Abstract In a historical context, Georges Seurat is and will always be regarded as the quintessential divisionist painter. He launched an artistic revolution, beginning with his work to establish a radically new style to close out the nineteenth century, and continuing into his indirect influence on Henri Matisse, who helped to revolutionize twentieth century art and beyond. Seurat was a diligent worker who left nothing to chance in constructing his work. He studied and grinded through every minute detail of the process, and if it were not for this diligence, we may not have seen neo-impressionism become the juggernaut of a movement that we know it as today. Seurat’s influence on his contemporaries was clear, as he was able to amass a group of artists who adopted his style and artistic ideals. It is difficult to say just how much differently the story of twentieth century art might have been told if Matisse never delved into Seurat’s ideals, but it is safe to say that art history would have been changed. Whatever the reasons for Matisse’s decision to begin the Fauvist movement are largely irrelevant to the fact that Seurat’s influence challenged Matisse to learn more about himself as an artist. His trials and tribulations through divisionism guided him toward an outlet of expression that he had been searching for all along. It helped him find freedom and originality, and many artists who followed would be greatly influenced.
