Not done quickly. If you or I were to go down into a public space and if we were to say that we happen to believe in the real presence of Christ within the Eucharist, we would probably be understood. If there are other believers present (and others who have lost their faith) and if they have all received some kind of catechetical formation about what occurs at the celebration of Mass, they would understand, as Catholics, what would be meant by the real presence of Christ within the Eucharist. However, if, instead, any of us were to say that we believe in transubstantiation, we would probably not be understood by anyone (whether Catholic or not). In the same way too, we would probably not be understood if we were to say publicly that we happen to believe in the consubstantiality of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Like transubstantiality, consubstantiality exists as a technical term. Its use invokes a technical form of expression and the use of all technical terms points to technical meanings of one kind or another that are being signified and which are supposed to be communicated through the use of technical terms. In these instances (as examples), the teaching office of the Catholic Church sometimes prescribes teachings which are to be held and believed although they are not immediately or commonly understood by most persons who are to be regarded either as believers or as potential believers.

While they may differ in their understanding of evangelical - Roman Catholic relationships, they are agreed in their rejection of an attitude of hostility towards Roman Catholicism and, in particular, towards our Roman Catholic neighbours. The purpose of the booklet is to describe those differing understandings, not to establish criteria by which to judge the validity of another’s claim to be evangelical. We accept that there are others who do not share many of our convictions but who would, nonetheless, identify themselves as evangelicals. INTRODUCTION Ours is a divided society. Tragically, our divisions have created a society in conflict. Often, simplistic solutions are advocated by those who view this conflict in simplistic terms. ‘Brits out’ is one such proffered solution; ‘rooting out the terrorists’ is another.

    Catholic Teaching on the Pope St. Cyprian, 3rd century: "Where Peter is, there is the Church", repeated by St. Ambrose and St. Boniface. Confirmed by Pope Benedict XV, in the encyclical In Hac Tanta.1 St. Cyprian: "If someone does not hold fast to this unity of Peter, can he imagine that he still holds the faith? If he desert the chair of Peter upon whom the Church was built, can he still be confident that he is in the Church?"2 St. Cyprian: "There is one God and one Christ, and one Church, and one Chair founded on Peter by the word of the Lord. It is not possible to set up another altar or for there to be another priesthood besides that one altar and that one priesthood.
