They were there to monitor worldwide progress toward “Laudato Sí,” Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical urging better care of the planet. “‘Laudato Sí’ has been called the most important environmental writing in history,” says Chaudhary, who spoke at the Second Symposium on Global Sustainability. The event, sponsored by the Institute for Process Systems Engineering & Sustainability at Pazmany Peter Catholic University in Budapest, Hungary, focused on how accurately current models can predict humanity’s resource use. In 2014, she piloted the approach when she taught a class of just 20 students, less than half the typical class size. Instead of lecturing, Fischer had students work in small groups, exploring hands-on activities and solving problems. “Those 20 students were the most tight- knit group of students I’ve ever had in a class. They really were a cohort,” recalls Fischer, an associate professor of physics. WI Oshkosh, Oshkosh, WI Abstract: The concept and process of neuroplasticity and neuroplastic adaptations to differing environmental and sensory stimuli is accepted today as a fundamental capacity of the brain, however, the idea that the brain is a malleable integrated system is historically relatively recent. The focus of numerous 19th century scientists, including Gall, Flourens, Broca, and Sherrington resulted in a widespread belief among neuroscientists in both localization of function and the “fixed nature” of functional neuroanatomy. Further work by 20th century neuroscientists, such as Penfield’s brain mapping, solidified support for this approach. Challenges to this interpretation of the static nature of the brain started to appear around the middle of the 20th century, eventually resulting in a paradigm shift to the perspective that the brain is continually responsive and changing over the lifespan. This presentation covers the history of neuroscience’s change in perspective from “static to plastic” brains, describing pioneers and their research which resulted in the current level of knowledge and acceptance about neuroplasticity.

    The History of Nu Rho Psi The National Honor Society in Neuroscience Last updated 28 June 2016 Nu Rho Psi , the National Honor Society in Neuroscience, was founded in 2006, but its history can be traced to the early 1990s with the founding of Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN) (Hardwick, Kerchner, Lo m, Ramirez &Wiertelak, 2006). Early History of Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience In the spring of 1991 conversations involving Sally Frutinger at Denison University, Stephen George at Amherst College, Dennison Smith at Oberlin College, and Julio Ramirez at Davidson College led to a proposal for a social event at the 1991 Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) in New Orleans, Louisiana, for neuroscientists interested in educating undergraduate students, particularly at predominantly undergraduate institutions. Ramirez explored the idea of creating an organization for undergraduate neuroscience faculty with Patricia Goldman-Rakic, Past President of the Society for Neuroscience , and with her encouragement, Ramirez, Frutinger, George, and Smith formed a Steering Committee . The Steering Committee mailed out invitations to individuals with interests in undergraduate neuroscience education and 67 individuals attended the social. The response to the proposal for a formal organization was very positive and those in attendance were energized to embark on the formation of this as yet unnamed organization. After considerable discussion in the spring of 1992 the name Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience was adopted. An Executive Committee was formed consisting of Ramirez, Frutinger , George, Smith, and Gary Dunbar from Central Michigan University.     Nu Rho Psi Extracurricular Club Constitution ARTICLE I The name of the organization shall be “Nu Rho Psi Extracurricular Club” (NRP Club) ARTICLE II The purpose of the organization shall be to prepare undergraduates at all stages of neuroscience research at Rutgers University for induction into the Nu Rho Psi Honor Society. This includes beginner-level students just starting their careers in research as well as senior-level students intending to enter a countrywide network of neuroscience researchers post-graduation. In line with nationally established values of the honor society, the primary goals of this club are to: encourage professional interest and excellence in neuroscience scholarship, award recognition to students who have achieved such excellence, encourage intellectual and social interaction between students, faculty and professionals in neuroscience and related fields, promote career development, increase public awareness of neuroscience and its benefits for the individual and society, and encourage service to the community. Section I NRP Club will hold bi-weekly meetings to discuss various contemporary topics in neuroscience research.
