The Jockey Club Derby was inaugurated this year as part of the New York Racing Association's Turf Trinity, a series of races for 3-year-old males that began with the July 6 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (G1T), followed by the Aug. 4 Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes. The race includes the first two winners in the series—Bloom Racing Stable's Henley's Joy, who won the 1 1/4- mile Belmont Derby, and Leonard Green's A Thread of Blue, the speedy winner of the 1 3/16-mile Saratoga Derby.
