Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity. -

The major component of this pheromone is the sesquiterpene (E)- β-farnesene (Eβf), but variations occur between aphid species. In the present work, we collected, identified, and quantified the alarm pheromone ofAphis craccivora Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae), before quantifying the escape behavior induced in the neighboring individuals. We compared the semiochemistry and associated behavior of alarm signaling with two other aphid species: Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and Aphis fabae Scopoli (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Eβf was the only volatile found for each species. M. persicae produces a higher quantity of Eβf (8.39 ± 1.19 ng per individual) than A. craccivora (6.02 ± 0.82 ng per individual) and A. fabae (2.04 ± 0.33 ng per individual). Following exposure to natural doses of synthetic Eβf (50 ng and 500 ng), A. craccivora respond more strongly than the two other Aphidinae species with 78% of the individuals initiated alarm behavior for 500 ng of Eβf. -

NA LI ŚCIACH DRZEW ULICZNYCH TILIA ‘EUCHLORA’ Abstract: This publication presents the influence of soil salinity on the abundance of aphids on the leaves of street trees in cities. The objects of research were trees of Crimean Linden ( Tilia ‘Euchlora ’) planted at Zwirki and Wigury Street in Warsaw. The research included the evaluation of the trees’ condition, the counting of the number of Lime Aphid ( Eucallipterus tiliae L.), as well as the determination of chlorine and nitrogen content in the leaves. The research revealed a statistically significant influence of chlorine content in the leaves on the deterioration of their condition. The increased content of chlorine in the leaves was accompanied by a decrease in the number of aphids. This relationship was statistically significant. No nitrogen deficiency in the leaves was detected. No statistically relevant relationship between the nitrogen content and the condition of the trees was observed. There was a weak negative correlation which, however, was statistically insignificant. Using the regression function it was determined that the increase in chlorine content in leaves by 1% (from 1.0 to 2%) resulted in a decrease in the abundance of aphids by 49%. What is more, a statistically significant (p = 0.032) influence of nitrogen content on the abundance of aphids was proved. -

We report records of 25 species of aphids collected from four species of woody plants (Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies, Betula pubescens and B. pendula)at50 study sites in Northern Europe, located from 59° to 70° N and from 10° to 60° E. Critical evaluation of earlier publications demonstrated that in spite of the obvi- ous limitations of our survey, the obtained information substantially contributed to the knowledge of the distribution of aphids in North European Russia, includ- ing Murmansk oblast (103 species recorded to date), Republic of Karelia (58 spe- cies), Arkhangelsk oblast (37 species), Vologda oblast (17 species) and Republic of Komi (29 species). We confirm the occurrence of Cinara nigritergi in South- ern Karelia; Pineus cembrae, Cinara pilosa and Monaphis antennata are for the first time recorded in Norway. A. Nine species of Eriosoma and its allied genera, all leaf-roll aphids on Ulmaceae and occur ring in Japan, are dealt with. Descriptions of gall-generations, exules, sexuparae and galls are given, with brief biological notes for some species. The species-complex hitherto called Eriosoma japonicum is classified into 6 species, including 5 ones new to science. A parasitic form of Eriosoma yangi, occurring on Ulmus davidiana var. japonica, is formally described as a new subspecies different from the nominate form on Ulmus parvifolia in not only behavior but also morphological characters of their fundatrices. The subdivision of Eriosoma is recon sidered in connection with the divergence and distribution of the host plants, and the ulmi group is newly proposed. A leaf-roll aphid associated with Zelkova is described as a new species belonging to Hemipodaphis, which has only been known from the morph occurring on the secon dary host in India; on the basis of the new species Hemipodaphis is transferred to the Pemphigidae (Eriosomatinae) from the Hormaphididae. -

However, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. In this study, the molecular mechanism of host alternation was explored through a large-scale gene expression analysis of the mealy aphid Hyalopterus persikonus on winter and summer host plants. More than four times as many unigenes of the mealy aphid were significantly upregulated on summer host Phragmites australis than on winter host Rosaceae plants. In order to identify gene candidates related to host alternation, the differentially expressed unigenes of H. persikonus were compared to salivary gland expressed genes and secretome of Acyrthosiphon pisum. Genes involved in ribosome and oxidative phosphorylation and with molecular functions of heme–copper terminal oxidase activity, hydrolase activity and ribosome binding were potentially upregulated in salivary glands of H. persikonus on the summer host. Putative secretory proteins, such as detoxification enzymes (carboxylesterases and cytochrome P450s), antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase and superoxide dismutase), glutathione peroxidase, glucose dehydrogenase, angiotensin-converting enzyme, cadherin, and calreticulin, were highly expressed in H. -

In total 20 aphid species, representing 12 genera, were found infesting 35 medicinal and aromatic plant species under 31 genera encompassing 19 families. Aphis gossypii with 17 host plant species was the most polyphagous species followed by Myzus persicae and Aphis fabae that infested 15 and 12 host plant species respectively. Twenty-two host plant species had multiple aphid species infestation. Sonchus asper was infested by eight aphid species and was followed by Tagetes minuta, Galinosoga perviflora and Chenopodium album that were infested by 7, 6 and 5 aphid species respectively. Asteraceae with 11 host plant species under 10 genera, carrying 13 aphid species under 8 genera was the most aphid- prone plant family. A preliminary systematic checklist of studied aphids and list of host plant species are provided. Key words: Aphids, Medicinal/Aromatic plants, checklist, Poonch, Kashmir, Pakistan.
