@UAB_MGOLF #GreaterBHAM MEN’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE 2017-18 HEAD COACH MIKE WILSON SECOND SEASON - CHARLESTON SOUTHERN ‘99

University of Alabama at Birmingham Director of Athletics Mark Ingram named Mike Wilson the men’s golf coach at UAB in 2016. Wilson enters his second season leading the Blazers after unprecedented success at Charleston Southern University.

“UAB is a wonderful university with an outstanding golf program that is capable of winning national championships,” Wilson said. “The city of Birmingham and its great golf courses was a very strong attrac- tion. I want to thank Mark Ingram and the entire UAB administration for the opportunity to lead an amazing program with rich history.”

Wilson quickly made his mark with the Green and Gold during his initial fall campaign (2016), leading the Blazers to a fourth-place finish at the prestigious National Intercollegiate while taking down No.21 Alabama, Arkansas and Michigan in the process.

The South Carolina native proved to be a force early on the recruiting trail, as he plucked All-Conference performer R.J. Keur from Charleston Southern. Keur entrenched himself among the conference’s best during his first season as a Blazer while leading UAB in season scoring average (72.8) and top-five finishes (two).

Following his stellar season, Keur qualified for the NCAA Regionals at LSU, where the junior finished tied for 17th. His appearance in the NCAA tournament continued a streak of consecutive seasons (seven) that UAB has qualified for the event. As a result of his play, Keur was tabbed as a first team All-Conference USA member.

Junior Taylor Eyster also thrived under Wilson’s tutelage, turning in a second-place finish at the Conference USA tournament behind an even-par result (71-72-73). For his efforts, Eyster took home second team All-Conference honors.

Wilson spent the previous nine years at Charleston Southern. He was the head women’s golf coach from 2007-09 before being named the men’s coach in 2009. In 2011, Wilson was appointed the Director of Golf which gave him oversight of both programs while remaining as the head men’s golf coach.

The CSU men’s team is coming off back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances and captured the 2015 Big South title. The Buccaneers’ selection to the Tuscaloosa Regional in 2016 marked the first time in CSU history that a program earned an at-large berth into an NCAA championship event.

The Buccaneers also won the Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point in late November of 2015 to ascend into the Top 25 in the Golfstat rankings.

“Mike Wilson is a tremendous leader and golf coach,” Ingram said. “Not only does Mike bring an impressive knowledge of the game, but he has extensive experience as an administrator. Coming off our third straight NCAA tournament at UAB, we are confident that Mike will continue our success on the national stage and elevate our program to new heights.”

Under Wilson’s watch, Austin James completed the best single season in CSU history, sweeping Big South Player of the Year and Big South Medalist honors as a junior in 2015-16. He won the Big South Championship by five strokes at 11-under par, one shot shy of ’s championship record. James reached the quarterfinals of last year’s U.S. Amateur and recorded nine Top 10 finishes in his junior season.

The year prior, Wilson led the Buccaneers to the 2015 Big South Men’s Golf Championship and a berth in the Lubbock Regional in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. The Bucs posted the lowest final round - 10-under - in Big South history to win its first conference championship in 12 years. The Bucs won by six strokes over Campbell and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003, joining the likes of Texas, Texas Tech, Cal, Auburn, and Duke at The Rawls Course in Lubbock. Newcomer R.J. Keur was the first freshman since 2008 to win the Big South Championship, finishing the week at 8-under par to win by one stroke.

In Wilson’s first season as head coach, the Buccaneers finished second in the Big South after a seventh place finish the year before. In 2012 Wilson was named the Big South Coach of the Year.

In 2007-08, Wilson led the Lady Bucs to the 2008 Big South Championship and onto the NCAA East Regional, where the Bucs finished 19th overall. Jordan Higgins finished second overall at the Big South Championships and, along with teammate Katrin Rumpf, earned All-Conference honors. Jeter again earned BSC Academic All-Conference accolades as the Bucs shared the BSC Sportsmanship Award with Radford.

Upon graduating from CSU in 1999, Wilson served as an assistant coach for the 1999-2000 season. He spent seven years as the Golf Assistant and Director of Instruction as the Seabrook Island Club on John’s Island, S.C., before joining the Top Golf Academy in Alexandria, Va., as a teaching professional in 2006. Wilson also spent time as a golf professional at Coosaw Creek Country Club in North Charleston, S.C.

Wilson and his wife Jennifer have two daughters, Brooklyn and Blakely. ASST. COACH AUSTIN CODY FIRST SEASON - DUKE ‘14

A native of North Charleston, S.C., Austin Cody enters his inaugural season as the assistant men’s golf coach after spending the previous three years as the assistant golf professional at Legend Oaks Golf Club in Summerville, S.C. He also was the head coach of the junior interclub team at Legend Oaks.

Cody is a 2014 graduate of Duke University where he was a four year letterwinner on the men’s golf team (2010-2014). He quickly made his mark with the Blue Devils as a freshman, posting a 5-1-1 record in match play in the Callaway Collegiate, reaching the semifinals of the NCAA Championship in the process. He followed up his opening campaign with two wins on the Amateur circuit in the Summer of 2011.

In 115 total rounds, Cody notched 22 under-par showings and picked up 14 career top-20 finishes. His best individual performance came in the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate when he finished in second place, helping Duke to a first place team finish. Additionally, he was an integral member of the 2013 Blue Devils team that won the 2013 ACC championship.

Also impressive in the classroom, Cody was a three-time ACC All-Academic team honoree, majoring in sociology and minoring in markets and management studies.

Cody had an illustrious prep and junior career. He was a standout at Pinewood Preparatory, where he was named the region player of the year five consecutive seasons and was a seven-time all-state selection. Additionally, he was selected the Lowcountry Golfer of the Year on four occasions. On the junior circuit, he was a two-time South Carolina Golf Association junior champion and amassed 18 championships over the duration of his junior golf career.

The son of Quince and Billie Cody, he has a younger sister, Blair. @UAB_MGOLF #GreaterBHAM MEN’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE 2017-18 TAYLOR EYSTER SENIOR - BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - MOUNTAIN BROOK EYSTER’S CAREER STATISTICS
