Previous meetings • The clubs are meeting for the first time in UEFA competition. • In their sole previous encounter with Belgian opponents, St-Étienne drew 1-1 at Club Brugge in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage. • Anderlecht's 20 games against French sides have ended W7 D9 L4 (W3 D5 L2 in France). Most recently, they played Monaco in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage, drawing 1-1 at home and winning 2-0 in the principality. Form guide • St-Étienne are unbeaten in five European fixtures (W2 D3) after drawing their opening Group C match 1-1 at Mainz. • That was their third straight 1-1 UEFA Europa League group stage draw. Of their 17 group games in this competition, 11 have finished in draws. • Anderlecht are on a three-match winning streak in Europe, having scored three goals in each of those outings. • St-Étienne have qualified in two of their past three UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League group campaigns. • Anderlecht have made it through all five previous UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns. • St-Étienne's Florentin Pogba is the older brother of Manchester United's Paul Pogba. Links and trivia • The journey from Brussels to St-Étienne is around 600km, due south. • Anderlecht's Dennis Appiah and St-Étienne's Stéphane Ruffier (2010–11) and Kévin Malcuit (2010–12) were club- mates at Monaco. • Anderlecht's on-loan Uroš Spajić (Toulouse 2013–) and Sofiane Hanni (Nantes 2009–11) also have Ligue 1 experience. The coaches • St-Étienne coach since 2009, Christophe Galtier steered Les Verts to French League Cup success in 2012/13. He had worked as assistant to Alain Perrin at St-Étienne before getting the senior job. Originally a defender, he started his playing career at home-town club Marseille. • Capped once by Switzerland, René Weiler is in his first season as Anderlecht coach having spent his first two years of coaching abroad with Nürnberg in Germany from 2014–16. The one-time defender established his coaching reputation in his home country with Schaffhausen and Aarau. 4 AS Saint-Étienne - RSC Anderlecht Thursday 29 September 2016 - 21.05CET (21.05 local time) Match press kit Stade Geoffroy Guichard, Saint-Etienne Team facts AS Saint-Étienne Formed: 1919 Nickname: Les Verts (The Greens) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • European Champion Clubs' Cup: (1976) Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) Domestic title: 10 (1981) French Cup: 6 (1977) French League Cup: 1 (2013) Ten-year European record (UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup unless indicated otherwise) 2015/16: round of 32 2014/15: group stage 2013/14: play-offs 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2011/12: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2010/11: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2009/10: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2008/09: round of 16 2007/08: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2006/07: did not take part in UEFA club competition Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 7-0: St-Étienne v KuPS Kuopio 01/01/80, UEFA Cup first round second leg • Biggest away win 0-7: KuPS Kuopio v St-Étienne 17/09/80, UEFA Cup first round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 1-4 twice, most recently v Ipswich Town FC 04/03/81, UEFA Cup quarter-final first leg • Heaviest away defeat 4-0 twice, most recently v Bohemians 1905 03/11/82, UEFA Cup second round second leg UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup • Biggest home win 7-0: St-Étienne v KuPS Kuopio (see above) • Biggest away win 0-7: KuPS Kuopio v St-Étienne (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 1-4 twice, most recently v Ipswich Town FC (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 4-0: Bohemians 1905 v St-Étienne (see above) RSC Anderlecht Formed: 1908 Nicknames: Paars-wit (Purple and Whites, Dutch), Les Mauves et Blancs (Purple and Whites, French) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (2): 1976, (1977), 1978, (1990) • UEFA Cup (1): 1983, (1984) • UEFA Super Cup (2): 1976, 1978 Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 33 (2014) 5 AS Saint-Étienne - RSC Anderlecht Thursday 29 September 2016 - 21.05CET (21.05 local time) Match press kit Stade Geoffroy Guichard, Saint-Etienne Belgian Cup: 9 (2008) Ten-year European record (UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup unless indicated otherwise) 2015/16: round of 16 2014/15: round of 32 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 2013/14: UEFA Champions League group stage 2012/13: UEFA Champions League group stage 2011/12: round of 32 2010/11: round of 32 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League play-offs) 2009/10: round of 16 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League play-offs) 2008/09: UEFA Champions League second qualifying round 2007/08: round of 16 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2006/07: UEFA Champions League group stage Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 9-0: Anderlecht v Derry City FC 23/11/65, European Champion Clubs' Cup first round first leg • Biggest away win 1-10: FC Haka v Anderlecht 14/09/66, European Champion Clubs' Cup first round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-5: Anderlecht v Paris Saint-Germain 23/10/13, UEFA Champions League group stage 0-5: Anderlecht v FC Bayern München 06/03/08, UEFA Cup round of 16 first leg • Heaviest away defeat 10-0: Manchester United FC v Anderlecht 26/09/56, European Champion Clubs' Cup preliminary round second leg UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup • Biggest home win 6-1: Anderlecht v Leiftur 12/08/09, qualifying round first leg 6-1: Anderlecht v FK Sarajevo 24/11/82, third round first leg 5-0: Anderlecht v FC Tiligul Tiraspol 29/07/98, first qualifying round second leg • Biggest away win 0-3 on six occasions, most recently v SK Slavia Praha 18/08/16, play-off first leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-5: Anderlecht v FC Bayern München (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 6-1: Real Madrid CF v Anderlecht 12/12/84, third round second leg 6 AS Saint-Étienne - RSC Anderlecht Thursday 29 September 2016 - 21.05CET (21.05 local time) Match press kit Stade Geoffroy Guichard, Saint-Etienne Squad list AS Saint-Étienne Current season All-time QUAL UEL League UEL UEFA No.

  • Ligue 1 Guide 2021/22
2021/2022 Ligue 1 Preview Guide INTRODUCTION After a historically close title race that saw four teams in the running Ligue 1 is back with no small amount of fanfare following a busy summer. Of those four sides, while Lille and Lyon have been relatively quiet as they try to consolidate under new managers, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain have been eager participants in the mercato, buying well in a way that addresses the two sides’ needs. Nice and Rennes have also done some canny business in the offseason, to say nothing of Marseille’s flood of arrivals, but the discussions about pro- spective title favorites in France have to start and end with the capital side. Even as rumors swirl around the potential departure of Kylian Mbappé, it’s hard to argue that Paris Saint-Ger- main haven’t done their utmost to convince their young star to stay. At least, that is, if one judges by their transfer activity. The arrivals of Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Achraf Hakimi have bolstered Mauricio Pochettino’s side in key areas whilst also adding another layer of dynamism. If he can keep his squad happy and balanced, this team looks as potent as any in Europe, Elsewhere, Monaco are probably best-equipped to challenge, even as they will have to contend with playing European football. The arrivals of Myron Boadu, Alexander Nübel and Ismail Jakobs look to be upgrades, and so long as Niko Kovac’s exciting, front-foot football remains in place and so do all of its key elements.

  • GET FRENCH FOOTBALL NEWS 2020/2021 Ligue 1 Preview Guide
GET FRENCH FOOTBALL NEWS 2020/2021 Ligue 1 Preview Guide Rarely has French football been simultaneously seemingly on the verge of a breakthrough moment in Europe, with the Champions’ League achievements of Lyon and Paris Saint-Ger- main not yet brought to their conclusion as I write this, or so seemingly vulnerable. For all of the achievements that teams like Lille or Lyon have had in recent years, French clubs still re- main prey for those with deeper pockets, and success only makes their most talented players that much more attractive - the unsettled nature of things at both the Stade Pierre Mauroy and Groupama Stadium are testament to that. Still, though, there is much to celebrate as a new season of Ligue 1 dawns - yes, Paris Saint-Ger- main look likely to stroll to the title again, but Marseille and their boisterous supporters will relish being back in Europe’s elite competition after finishing second. There is joy, too, at Rennes, where the Breton side have continued their steady improvement under Julien Stéphan and been rewarded with a place in the Champions’ League. For all of their acheivements last campaign, though, both of those teams may struggle, as Lille did last season, to negotiate playing in Eu- rope. Both have made important additons this summer, though, in the form of the influential Álva- ro González making his loan move permanent for Marseille and Rennes making a canny move in plucking Martin Terrier from Lyon to bolster their attack. Among their competitors, however, Lille have been the big spenders, splashing out €30m on the Canadian attacker Jonathan Da- vid, his success in the Belgian league hopefully boding well for him as he hopes to succeed the departed Victor Osimhen.

  • 2018/2019 Ligue 1 Preview Guide
2018/2019 LIGUE 1 PREVIEW GUIDE As Ligue 1 begins again, there is a rare air of expectancy. No, there haven’t been the sort of blockbuster transfers of the likes of Kylian Mbappé or Neymar, just the usual flow of some of the league’s best players to England and Spain, in the form of Malcom, Fabinho, Thomas Le- mar, Issa Diop, and others. But there have also been a number of brilliant signings made under the radar, and given the recent record of French clubs in turning young players around for con- siderable profit, the league’s official new slogan “The League ofalents” T may be more apt than the casual observer may realise. Paris Saint-Germain, of course, remain prohibitive favourites for the title, but have enough weaknesses, particularly at left back and in defensive midfield as new manager Thomas uchelT toys with the idea of a back three. Still, though, this marks a decided summer of change for the champions, for whom Gianluigi Buffon is their only signing, a marked contrast from previous spending. Still, though, a full season of Neymar and further development from Kylian Mbappé should leave them well-placed to repeat. Away from the capital, Lyon and Marseille haven’t experienced much in the way of movement, with both clubs losing only a few spare parts, as Nabil Fékir’s mooted move to Liverpool failed to come to fruition. The additions of Léo Dubois and Martin Terrier follow on from their recent trend (Lucas Tousart, Tanguy N’Dombélé) of buying young players from other clubs, hoping to reap the benefits by selling them on.
