  • “Items of Interest”
GHSA “Items of Interest” March 2007 GHSA Will Move Forward With Changing Times The GHSA calendar seems to be played at “fast forward” speed all the time. At this time, the basketball championships are closing the curtain on winter sports. Spring sports are cranking up and then the 2006-2007 school year will be ended. The GHSA Executive Committee will meet this month to develop policy that will take the association forward into the coming years. Trying to be proactive in the ever-changing landscape of education is a difficult task. Interest is already mounting over the 2008-2010 reclassification cycle that will be finalized in January of 2008. Administrators and coaches at our member schools also deal with rap- idly changing policies and procedures in education that seem to have nothing to do with GHSA issues. It is increasingly apparent, however, that some of the changes which don’t seem to affect the GHSA now really will do so in the future. Movements toward school choice issues and charter school issues present situations that appear to be in- compatible with existing eligibility guidelines that were developed in a different educational era. Since the GHSA is outspoken in its belief that participation in athletics and competitive activities are extensions of classroom activities, it is important that this Association responds to the changes we are seeing in education in Georgia – and across the nation. Several rules and procedures have been put in place over the past few years that accentuate accountability on schools to provide a safe and healthy atmosphere for competitions.
