You may be surprised to see how much international food is actually available once you know where to look for it. Online shops If you are stretched for time (or looking for convenience) there are a large number of online stores that cater for food from specific regions or for the international community in general e.g. www.orientalmart.co.uk ; info@Lekker- Hollands.nl and many more that are listed in this booklet. Chain stores Major supermarkets are increasingly stocking international products – often FOOD FROM HOME these are in a special section of the shop, the so-called international section (wereldafdeling). Markets A checklist of Dutch markets can be found on the Internet at: www.hollandsemarkten.nl - there is at least one for every day of the week! Especially the organic markets (biologische markten) are good for sourcing fresh vegetables, fish and lesser-known cuts of meat. They also often have an extensive health shop (Reform winkel) where one can buy different types of flour and a large variety of herbs and spices at a good price. While some markets are truly international (e.g. Dappermarkt, Amsterdam East) some specialize in foodstuffs from a specific region e.g the Oosterse markt in Beverwijk ( www.chinatownholland.nl ; www.debazaar.nl ) or the Albert Cuyp market in De Pijp in Amsterdam ( www.decuyp.nl ) that caters especially for Greek, Moroccan and Indian cuisine. Oriental supermarkets (Tokos) There are many smaller oriental supermarkets in most towns in the Netherlands. To find the ones nearest to you, check lists on the Internet like: www.tastyweb/adreslijst.asp?id=4 Turkish shops These are also plentiful and always have good lamb in stock as well as really ripe fruit and many ingredients needed for Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean and African cooking e.g. maize flour. They also stock bicarbonate of soda. Health shops (Reformwinkels ) These shops stock tofu, rice flour and waffles, pulses, wholegrain wheat products, non-dairy substitutes, organic fresh produce and some imported goods. PAGINA 2 FOOD FROM HOME Websites A useful site is www.contined.nl where one can check out the Dutch equivalent for the names of specific fruits and vegetables. Cooking Dutch is a website intended to give cooking hints to foreigners, mainly Americans living in the Netherlands (info:[email protected]). Check the website at http://nieuw.wereldwinkels.nl to find the nearest fair-trade shop – they often carry foodstuffs from all parts of the world. If you are residing in or near Amsterdam there is a wonderful list of shops stocking international food at: www.allesinamsterdam.nl/item/41/4177/ia4177_nk_r.html Schiphol Plaza At the airport there are three shops that cater for international food and drink: Dufry Liquors, Food Village and Per Tutti. All are open from 07:00 – 22:00 seven days a week. ( www.schiphol.nl ) Books to read There is an excellent, well-researched publication written by Ada Henne Koene called “The Food Shopper’s Guide to Holland” (Delft: Eburon, c1996 ISBN 90 5166 777 9). Although it is out of print at the moment ACCESS still has some copies and it can be found at secondhand bookstores. In it you will find descriptions and illustrations of Dutch and other exotic vegetables, an English/Dutch vocabulary list, the Dutch names for different cuts of meat and a list of weights and measures with their Dutch equivalents. Linda Roosenburg has put together the illustrated “Rotterdams Kookboek” for the Stichting Madame Jeanet. This book gives recipes, stories and tips about Chinese, Indian, Malayan, Surinamese, Aruban, and Cape Verdean cooking. It also covers Eritrea, Africa, Iran, Turkey, Morocco, and Italy and has a section on the Jewish kitchen. PAGINA 3 ONLINE SHOPS For this booklet a number of culinary traditions have been grouped into broad geographic regions. For each region there are a number of stores listed (by city) that stock relevant ingredients. The regions overlap and the list of food stores (and, in some cases, restaurants) is by no means exhaustive, but we hope at least to have pointed you in the right direction. As to the opening hours, we only men- tion those that are outside of the usual shop hours.
