'Laylet el Booree' translates as the 'Night of the Madness'. It refers to the last part of the annual gathering of the adorcist ritual from the Banga of Tozeur – it is the night when the spirits actually take possession of the bodies. Like the ritual itself, the album is wild, frantic, and never caresses the listener’s expectations. But its purpose is also to heal; with sweat, spirituality, electricity and trance being central to the almost overwhelming sensory experience. With the band now joined by new member Fatma Chebbi (on vocals and tchektchekas hand percussion) one senses that the musical and cultural conversation is even deeper this time around. In fact, it doesn’t feel like a speculative conversation at all, but rather something fully formed and undeniable. An emergent ritual in itself. Listen. Mekons: Deserted GBCD 69 / € 10,45 / 4030433606926 / label: Glitterbeat Records / format: CD / England – Punk-Roots GBLP 69 / € 13,45 / 4030433606919 / label: Glitterbeat Records / format: LP / England – Punk-Roots This legendary group from Leeds, have written contemporary music history for the last 40 years as radical innovators of both first generation punk and insurgent roots music. Their new album was recorded in the desert environs of Joshua Tree, California and is drenched with widescreen, barbed-wire atmosphere and hard-earned (but ever amused) defiance. The return of one of the planet’s most essential rock & roll bands. For more than four decades they’ve been a constant contradiction, an ongoing art project of observation, anger and compassion, all neatly summed up in the movie Revenge of the Mekons, which has ironically brought an upsurge in their popularity around the US as new audiences discovers their shambling splendour. And now the caravan continues with Deserted, their first full studio album in eight years. Listen. Il Civetto: Facing The Wall EBM 32 / € 11,95 / 4015698026955 / label: Eastblok Music / format: CD / Germany – Global-Popular EBM 33 / € 18,95 / 4015698027037 / label: Eastblok Music / format: LP / Germany – Global-Popular With 'Facing the Wall', written in Morocco, Greece and Andalusia, sung in English, German and French, recorded in Berlin, Il Civetto have carried their ecstatic-magical playground from the stage to the studio a second time with great attention to detail. The dreamy lightness of the self-titled debut album has given way to hard reality: 'Facing the Wall' is a deeply touching fragment of our time. The expression of a generation in upheaval, searching. An album between euphoria and melancholy - wallowing, sweating, dancing - with a tingling belly and wide open eyes. Il Civetto have become more serious, somehow more real, and yet have retained their very own, characteristic sound. Deeply touching, always danceable. Listen to a track. Janusz Prusinowski Kompania: Po Sladach – In The Footsteps BUDA 860345 / € 11,05 / 3341348603452 / label: Buda Musique / format: CD / Poland – Folk This is a group of musicians who follows the traditions of the village masters they have learned the music from, but they are also an avant-garde band with their own characteristic sound and language of improvisation. They combine music with dance and the archaic with the modern. Kompania’s unique style is the result of their attempt to find new ways of interpreting the most important elements of village music from central Poland. It brings together mazurkas – sung, played, danced to, improvised live – and modern man. It turns out that traditional music of Polish villages can be a reference point for a variety of genres: reminiscent of Chopin in its melodic pattern and the use of rubato, sharing a love of improvisation with blues and jazz, evocative of contemporary music in its tone, and possessing the expressiveness of rock music. Listen. Carlo Maver: Volver VM 3024 / € 9,95 / 8392347030249 / label: Visage Music / format: CD / Italy – Folk 'Volver' is the new album by Carlo Maver. Recorded live in May 2018 in the small church of Casola (BO), solo bandoneon and flute. This musical presentation of Carlo Maver is the transformation of a feeling, where listening inside and outside is a goal, thanks to which listener and performer find themselves together in a total experience. 'Volver' is music that comes from silence and that is attracted by silence. It's not only entertaining, it exposes. The choice to play solo allows Carlo Maver to keep the sounds of the instruments pure, working in subtraction and leaving the pauses an almost crucial role. Listen to a track. Centolanza E Gli Spendidi: Il Giorno, Poi La Notte SQLCD 115 / € 9,95 / 9788885571204 / label:Squi Libri / format: CD / Italy – Popular Swing and ballads, manouche and jazz, waltzes and rock-blues atmospheres are so tied to this albums story that, another surprising anomaly, it rises far from any epic temptation as from any intimate drift singing with great irony doubts and malaise of an imaginary people, lost in some urban suburbs between "dull works and disappointed looks". Dreaming about the rubble of those who do not know or dare not dream, the musicians invent an alphabet of emotions to laugh at themself and the world and to try, with lightness, to ease the pain that everyone carries inside. Listen. Mauro Palmas: Palma De Sols SQLCD 116 / € 9,95 / 9788885571211 / label: Squi Libri / format: CD / Italy – Folk From one piece to the next, a timeless journey along the ancient routes of a sea that witnesses multiple destinies and guards priceless beauties, is a theatre of unspeakable suffering and a vehicle for dreams and promises of life, both individual and for entire peoples. The Mediterranean once an enclave of different civilizations and now a mirror of fierce selfishness, becomes a story thanks to the text by Maria Gabriela Ledda that, written specifically for this work and entrusted to the voice of Simonetta Soro, winds like a seductive common thread between the different songs, revealing and naming what the music expresses but does not say.
