Istoga trena leptir će raskriliti svoja krupna prednja krila i u nas će sada „zuriti” dva para „sovinih očiju”. Veliko noćno paunče svakako možemo smatrati vrijednim uresom naše entomofaune i znakom očuvanosti i prirodnosti šumskih staništa. Saturnia pyri – Great peacock moth, goliath among native moths and valuable proof of our preserved forests Undoubtedly largest European moth species, Great peacock moth Saturnia pyri (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) is widely distributed cosmopolitan species thriving in various forest biotopes. In spite of its large area of appearance and huge size among insects (it can exceed 15 cm in wingspan) it is not too common and we rarely find it in larger numbers. It also happens that, based on general morphological similarities and large size, we misidentify it with the introduced Japanese oak silkmoth (Antheraea yamamai Guérin-Méneville, 1861). Polyphagous caterpillar of the Great peacock moth as also huge and readily feeds with leaves of forest fruit trees. An „eyecatching” feature of an adult moth are so called „fake eyes”, by which it was given name in 5- 6 Croatian as well as in other European languages where it is known to common people and professionals. This morphological feature, common in the whole group of Saturnidae, is interpreted evolutionary as a way of scaring potential predators by mimicking the eyes of real predators. One can best un- derstand this by gently poking a resting adult of Giant peacock moth. It will react by spreading the fore wings and revealing two more circular spots GODINA CXXXVII which will now double the initial two and result with two pairs of “owl eyes” staring at us. This large and beautiful moth is to be considered as a valu- Zagreb able gem amid our diverse insect fauna and a sign of maintained preservability and naturalness of our forest biotopes. 2013 ŠUMARSKI LIST, 5–6, CXXXVII (2013) ŠUMARSKI LIST, Tekst i fotografije: B. • The Amazing Complexity of Insect Midgut Cells: Types, Peculiarities, and Functions
Cell and Tissue Research (2019) 377:505–525 https://doi.org/10.1007/s00441-019-03076-w REVIEW The amazing complexity of insect midgut cells: types, peculiarities, and functions Silvia Caccia1 & Morena Casartelli2 & Gianluca Tettamanti3 Received: 10 May 2019 /Accepted: 8 July 2019 /Published online: 29 July 2019 # Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2019 Abstract The insect midgut epithelium represents an interface between the internal and the external environment and it is the almost unique epithelial tissue by which these arthropods acquire nutrients. This epithelium is indeed able to produce digestive enzymes and to support vectorial transport of small organic nutrients, ions, and water. Moreover, it plays a key role in the defense against pathogenic microorganisms and in shaping gut microbiota. Another important midgut function is the ability to produce signaling molecules that regulate its own physiology and the activity of other organs. The two main mature cell types present in the midgut of all insects, i.e., columnar and endocrine cells, are responsible for these functions. In addition, stem cells, located at the base of the midgut epithelium, ensure the growth and renewal of the midgut during development and after injury. In insects belonging to specific orders, midgut physiology is deeply conditioned by the presence of unique cell types, i.e., goblet and copper cells, which confer peculiar features to this organ. This review reports current knowledge on the cells that form the insect midgut epithelium, focusing attention on their morphological and functional features. Notwithstanding the apparent structural simplicity of this organ, the properties of the cells make the midgut a key player in insect development and homeostasis.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) represent potential alternatives in the treatment of multi-drug resistant (MDR) infections. Here, we focus on Cecropins (Cecs), a group of naturally occurring AMPs in insects, and on synthetic Cec-analogs. We describe their action mechanisms and antimicrobial activity against MDR bacteria and other pathogens. We report several data suggesting that Cec and Cec-analog peptides are promising antibacterial therapeutic candidates, including their low toxicity against mammalian cells, and anti-inflammatory activity. We highlight limitations linked to the use of peptides as therapeutics and discuss methods overcoming these constraints, particularly regarding the introduction of nanotechnologies. New formulations based on natural Cecs would allow the development of drugs active against Gram-negative bacteria, and those based on Cec-analogs would give rise to therapeutics effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. Cecs and Cec-analogs might be also employed to coat biomaterials for medical devices as an approach to prevent biomaterial-associated infections.

The species is considered a suc- cessful agent for biological control of Ambrosia artemisiifolia (Asterales Asteraceae), a weed whose pollen causes allergies in humans. A few additional findings of the moth have been recorded at several new sites in southeastern Europe (Serbia) using light trapping. We here present and discuss the current distribution of the moth in Europe and the paths of its spreading on the basis of GIS data. GIS technology was used to map the distribution and quantify values of environmental variables within the range of the analysed moth species. Additionally, the potential colonization of the moth across Europe is modelled on the basis of its current distribution, environmental variables and the host plant’s distribution. Data on 17 rare moth species from three superfamilies (Zygaenoidea, Noctuoidea, and Geometroidea) and five families (Heterogynidae, Limacodidae, Noctuidae, Erebidae, and Geometridae) are given in the present paper. One family (Heterogynidae), three genera (Heterogynis Rambur, 1837, Heterogenea Knoch, 1783, and Cervyna Ronkay, Zilli & Fibiger, 2005), and six species [Heterogynis penella (Hübner, 1819), Heterogenea asella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775), Mythimna andereggii (Boisduval, 1840), Episema korsakovi (Christoph, 1885), Cervyna cervago (Eversmann, 1844), and Bryophila rectilinea (Warren, 1909)] are reported as new for the fauna of Serbia. The noctuid moth fauna of Serbia currently includes 572 species. Eleven moth species were recorded in low numbers at a few sites and are therefore reported as being very rare. The findings reported here are mostly the second or third records for the country. Four noctuid moth species (Mythimna andereggii, Episema korsakovi, Cervyna cervago, Bryophila rectilinea) are recommended to be included in the Red List of Serbian Noctuidae as vulnerable (VU) taxa according to IUCN criteria.

This implies the existence of detect and/or produce signals that are proportional to body weight evolutionarily conserved feedback between sensors that produce changes transmitted across musculoskeletal designs. Although studies at the parallels exist between mechanobiology in animals and plants (for level of whole organisms and tissue morphology and function clearly recent plant biomechanics reviews, see Moulia, 2013; Niklas et al., indicate that musculoskeletal designs are constrained by body weight 2006). A more thorough mechanistic understanding of body- variation, the corollary to this – i.e. that the molecular-level weight-sensitive molecular-level changes to the musculoskeletal composition of musculoskeletal designs is sensitive to body weight system will greatly improve our understanding of the basic biology variation – has been the subject of only minimal investigation. The of musculoskeletal design and function during growth and across main objective of this Commentary is to briefly summarize the former animal size ranges, and of disease (and aging) phenotypes that area of study but, in particular, to highlight the latter hypothesis and impair locomotion.
