Strait Macintosh User Group WWDC - World Wide Developer Conference Strait Macintosh User Group - July 2020 Administrivia • SMUG spent money on Zoom subscription • Without it, all meetings would end after 40 minutes • SMUG is now listed in Apple User Group Resources, https:// appleusergroupresources.com • We will have elections in September Apple Silicon - convert from Intel to SoC or both • Apple SoC - System on chip • Intel - chips used by Apple since 2006 • Prior to that, used IBM chips • Prior to that, used Motorola chips • Prior to that, used MOS Technology chips Apple Silicon - port from-to other OS Apple Silicon • Apple will be moving away from Intel processors to its own processors. • Most of the details very technical, but Apple Silicon (general name) is already in use on over two billion devices, ranging from watches to Apple TV to iPads to iPhones. The Mac desktop and laptop are the last holdouts. • Security: Apple already uses Apple Silicon in the T1 and T2 security chips on newer desktops and laptops. • ARM - Advance RISC Machine • RISC - reduced instruction set • Apple Silicon for Macs will be SoC (System on a Chip) designs, focused on security and privacy, speed, and energy usage. • Example: original Apple Watch chip. It was a watch, with apps. • Apple Watch Series 1 added built-in GPS receiver, on chip • Apple Watch Series 2 added dual-core processor. • Apple Watch Series 3 added faster dual-core processor, incorporates wireless support on the processor (not as a separate chip) and supported cellular modem. • Apple Watch Series 4 switched to 64-bit dual-core processor, wireless support, Bluetooth support, GPU (graphics processing unit), and a magnetometer -- on one chip. • As a guess: Apple Silicon for Macs will be 64-bit, multi-core, with on-chip graphics, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth New emoji for Mac, iPhone, iPad • 171 new emoji macOS 11 Big Sur (not macOS 10.x) macOS 11 Control Center • One stop • Frequent functions • No need to go to several different System Preference panes macOS 11 Dock • Icons in Dock same as in Finder • Same as in iOS • Designed to be ignored • Except when needed macOS 11 Notification Center • Grouped better • More detailed Safari startup - useful information Safari tabs - hover to preview page Safari - one-button web privacy report Safari translation • Built-in to Safari. Load a webpage, push a button and -- it is in English. • Google has something similar, but Google sends your request back to Google, which translates it, and sends it back to you. • Google also tracks that you made the request. • Safari does much of the translation on-device. • It does send things back to Apple for translation, but it is an encrypted packet, and your address is generated dynamically; Apple does not know your identity. • Which means that, among other things, you won't translate a page on Japanese china patterns and then be blitzed with ads for chinaware. Messages - customize Memoji Messages - who is in group conversation macOS Big Sur • Supports Apple Silicon, supports Intel • Supports a developer suite that allows iOS apps to be ported to Big Sur. • Potentially, a huge chunk of the over 2 million iOS apps could come to Big Sur. • Huge expansion of games, though it takes time to change touch controls to clicks, and Macs can't be physically twisted and rotated like phones and iPads. • New compiler tools allow existing Mac apps to be recompiled to run under Apple Silicon. No need to rewrite; recompile. • Eventually, all Apple products will run under Apple Silicon Privacy Every app (Mac, iPhone, iPad, Watch, Apple TV) will have privacy info iOS Library If desired, you can automatically group all your apps by general function Picture in Picture (PiP) You can be in a FaceTime (as an example) conversation, and check your calendar, while still seeing the conversation Groups in Messages See who is in a group See incoming call Doesn’t take over entire screen New Home screen Used by HomePod and smart appliances Apple Translate On the phone; does not tell Apple anything that identifies you watchOS 7 • Checking on sleep health watchOS 7 • Automatic hand washing help.
