  • Juniper Green and Baberton Mains Community Council
Impact of Bank Closures Economy Jobs and Fair Work Committee - Tuesday 29 May Professor Cliff Beevers Juniper Green and Baberton Mains Community Council 1. Impact 1.1 Has there been an impact of bank closures on the wider local economy and community? Yes, an established business for many years in Juniper Green is the fishmonger. He tells me that his takings are down 15 -20% since the bank closed. He added that his colleague, another fishmonger, near Golden Acre, where two banks closed, has takings down 20%- 25%. The population of the villages of the upper Water of Leith, some 20,000 citizens, represent the size of a small town. When RBS left Juniper Green last year it was effectively the last bank in town. In a UK Government briefing paper [1] the research mapped bank branch closures against the British Bankers Association postcode lending data, They showed that “bank branch closures dampen SME lending growth by 63% on average in postcodes that lose a bank branch. This figures grows to 104% for postcodes that lose their last-bank-in- town. On average, postcodes that lose their last-bank-in-town receive almost £1.6million less lending over the course of a year - a significant and damaging drop in funding.” But, lending is not the only story; shopping footfall decreases and small traders also suffer lost revenue. An important point here is that these small traders like the fishmonger, butcher and greengrocers have a short supply chain so when the snow came suddenly on two recent occasions it was these small traders that were providing food for their respective communities when the so-called “big beasts” of retail had lorries stuck on the various motorways.

The surviving estate wall and policy trees that form the Bonnyfield Strip and the southern part of Davidson’s Mains Park make a major contribution to views on the west approach to Edinburgh along Queensferry Road.

  • Kirkliston to Cramond
Kirkliston to Cramond Last leg of a 4-part route down the full length of the valley of the River Almond. Starts Kirkliston. Quarter hourly bus (38) from Edinburgh. Also buses 63 and 600. Varied walk: banks of R. Almond, beside the airport runway; woods, estate; coast. Distance: 14 km Walk begins at bus stop on Kirkliston High St. adjacent to The Square beside the old Parish Church. Find a narrow snicket, behind black safety railings, next to a whitewashed cottage (2 doors right of the cottage with the ‘Amulree’ wall plaque). Follow the snicket as it doglegs left and the right towards the river. You emerge from Cobblers Close onto Wellflats Rd. Bear right. After a few paces go straight over the old railway path. After a few more paces, at the Y-junction, take the right-hand road straight ahead with a neat, brown fence on the right. The road looks to be ending but keep straight ahead along a really narrow pathway between houses, with a high fence on the right. This alleyway leads to the river bank. Carry on along a most pleasant stretch of river bank until you come to a bridge. Cross over. Turn sharp left to follow reasonably close to the riverside. Keep to the thin footpath on the low levee, rather than the field edge. Soon you come to the strange set of buildings of Hallyards. Walk straight ahead, keeping to the left of buildings. There are all sorts of strange containers, old vehicles and trucks. Keep going until your way appears to be blocked, or partially blocked.

  • Edinburgh City Council, Spaces for People East Craigs Low Traffic Neighbourhood Spokes Response, July 2020
Edinburgh City Council, Spaces for People East Craigs Low Traffic Neighbourhood Spokes response, July 2020 Spokes strongly welcomes the Low Traffic Neighbourhood plans for East Craigs. It will help create an environment which encourages and supports walking and cycling, will remove the severe rat-running on Craigs Road and will improve conditions for cycling to Craigmount High School. Only today, Cabinet Secretary for Transport Michael Matheson again urged people to resist the “obvious temptation” to return to car use, and to work from home or to “walk or cycle where possible” - with the Spaces for People scheme intended to assist this. The proposals create a number of cul-de-sacs not that dissimilar to the 40-hectare Bughtlin estate which all exits via Maybury Drive. With the building work having started on new homes at Cammo fields & West Craigs (the latter to exit onto Craigs Road west of Maybury Road) the traffic is only going to get worse. Whilst we are aware of calls for a widespread consultation on the proposals, we support this programme being under Spaces For People, taking account of stakeholder comments, with rapid implementation on a “try then modify” basis. This approach has proved successful so far with a wide range of smaller schemes and should be continued for this temporary area-wide scheme. Furthermore, a major consultation could delay the proposals to the extent that they could not be funded under Spaces for People and therefore might well never be attempted in any form. General comments For reasons of safety it is vital that temporary cycle lanes which cross junction mouths are as prominent as possible.
