The project aims to enhance awareness, both in the local and in the international community, of the cultural heritage of some of the most im- portant Ancient Near Eastern civilizations, as a necessary step for its future preservation. The project is partly focused on the literate societies of the Phoenicians and Nabataeans, for which writing was essential to several aspects of their organization: bureaucracy, commerce and religion. Far less known than the Phoenicians and the Nabataeans – but for the story of the Queen of Sheba’s visit to Solomon, or the myth of Arabia Felix in the classical world – the South Arabian civilization appeared at the end of the second millennium BC on the southern borders of the Near Eastern world, where the Arabian Peninsula looks out onto the Indian Ocean. Thanks to the ingenious ex- ploitation of water resources, the production of frankincense (the aromatic resin of the Boswellia Sacra tree) and its export to the rest of Arabia, Meso- potamia and the Mediterranean, the kingdoms of South Arabia flourished until the sixth century AD in the area of current Yemen. Furthermore a handbook explains to the general public the Nabataean civilization demonstrating the unique contribution to knowl- edge provided by inscriptions. The present volume aims to introduce the non-specialist public to the culture of South Arabia, by means of a journey through the most relevant of the near forty epigraphic and sixty an-ep- igraphic pieces preserved in the Museum. Detailed descriptions of the arte- facts, with transcriptions and translations of the texts, can also be consulted in the digital catalogue of MEDINA [medina.humnet.unipi.it].     THE ANCIENT AND MODERN INHABITANTS OF ARABIA BY HENRY FIELD Assistant Curator, Field Museum of Natural History THE Arabian peninsula, which Hes at the southwestern extrem- ity of Asia, has been inhabited from the earHest pre-historic period down to modern times. The geographical position of this peninsula in relation to the continents of Asia, Africa, and Europe, naturally marks Arabia as a region through which migrating peoples must have passed from the earliest times. Furthermore, historical tradition lends its sup- port to the fact that the "Garden of Eden" lay to the northeast of Arabia in the alluvial plain Avhich extends between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, and since the dawn of history, people have been drawn toward this spot, which is known as the "Fertile Crescent." Southwestern Asia, therefore, is of paramount importance from a geographical and anthropological standpoint. Owing to its inaccessibility in modern times, combined with the hostile attitude of its inhabitants, who have until this century re- fused the influences of western civilization to a marked degree, Arabia has remained little known to the outside world. The open- ing up of the Near East during the past generation has been due primarily to the World War and its aftermath. The introduction of the airplane and the automobile, means of transportation which are independent of water holes, and the advent of travelers in search of oil and precious metals, as well as new methods of transporta- tion for the pilgrims to and from Mecca, have all tended to change the life and customs of the people.

It offers an ideal socio-political context for the study of state–community relations in terms of polity formation as part of a political incorporation process. This focus provides a corrective to the still dominant segmentary society paradigm and its tribes-driven state politics in the anthropological discourse on Yemen. Polity formation in Soqotra occurred through a series of acts of political incorporation by a succession of political regimes from the late nineteenth century to the present. The study of this process is pursued through a historical narrative of the state’s politics of administration. This narrative is aptly described as a mesography, as its analytical focus is on the meso-level institutional web of four different political regimes with their distinctive modes of polity regimentation and their structuring effects on Soqotrans’ communal life.     Chapter 11 The Aksumites in South Arabia: An African Diaspora of Late Antiquity George Hatke 1 Introduction Much has been written over the years about foreign, specifically western, colo- nialism in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as about the foreign peoples, western and non-western alike, who have settled in sub-Saharan Africa during the modern period. However, although many large-scale states rose and fell in sub- Saharan Africa throughout pre-colonial times, the history of African imperial expansion into non-African lands is to a large degree the history of Egyptian invasions of Syria-Palestine during Pharaonic and Ptolemaic times, Carthagin- ian (effectively Phoenician) expansion into Sicily and Spain in the second half of the first millennium b.c.e, and the Almoravid and Almohad invasions of the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages. However, none of this history involved sub-Saharan Africans to any appreciable degree. Yet during Late Antiquity,1 Aksum, a sub-Saharan African kingdom based in the northern Ethi- opian highlands, invaded its neighbors across the Red Sea on several occasions. Aksum, named after its capital city, was during this time an active participant in the long-distance sea trade linking the Mediterranean with India via the Red Sea. It was a literate kingdom with a tradition of monumental art and ar- chitecture and already a long history of contact with South Arabia. The history of Aksumite expansion into, and settlement in, South Arabia can be divided into two main periods.     ASPECTS OF SOUTH YEMEN'S FOREIGN POLICY L967-L982 by Fred Halliday Department of International History London School of Economics and Political Science University of London Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy April 1985 Thesis Abstract This study analyses the foreign relations of South Yemen (since 1970 the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen) from independence in 1967 until 1982. It covers the first four Presidencies of the post- independence period, with their attendant policy changes, and ends with the resolution of two of the more pressing foreign policy conflicts with which South Yemen was concerned, its support for the guerrillas in North Yemen, who were defeated in the spring of 1982, and its conflict with the Sultanate of Oman, with whom diplomatic relations were concluded in October 1982. Chapter One provides an outline of the background to South Yemen's foreign policy: the outcome of the independence movement itself and the resultant foreign policy orientations of the new government; the independence negotiations with Britain; and the manner in which, in the post-independence period, the ruling National Front sought to determine and develop its foreign policy. The remaining four chapters focus upon specific aspects of South Yemen's foreign policy that are, it is argued, of central importance. Chapter Two discusses relations with the West - with Britain, France, West Germany and the USA. It charts the pattern of continued economic ties with western European states, and the several political disputes which South Yemen had with them. Chapter Three discusses the issue of 'Yemeni Unity' - the reasons for the continued commitment to this goal, the policy of simultaneously supporting opposition in North Yemen and negotiating with the government there, and the course of policy on creating a unified Yemeni state.

'"pHE PHYSICAL characters of the South Arabs reveal the fact A that they are remarkably diiTerent from the northern Arabs. Extremely round-headed, the South Arab has a small brain ca- pacity; his hair is fuzzy and on face and body may be almost absent. The skin color is often dark and swarthy. The North Arab, on the other hand, is long-headed, of lighter complexion and possesses dark brown hair with low waves. The great desert of Rub'al Khali serves as a formidable geographic bar- rier to prevent migrations. Between the North and the South Arab there has thus been little racial admixture in recent times. Racial affinities of the South Arab lie in northeast Africa ; a Ne- groid strain occurs in the belt from Africa through South Arabia to Melanesia, including the Dravidians of southern India. Infer- ences of these relationships may be drawn from photographs of racial types in South x\rabia. Several years ago Mr. A. R. ]\I. Rickards journeyed to Nisab, one of the larger Aulaqi towns, and along the Wadi Beihan, taking a number of photographs of the people he encountered. Through his general cooperation a series of his pictures illustrates these brief notes. ^ The photographs of the men from Dhufar and the Wadi Beihan show remarkable variations in physical type. Stability opera- tions frameworks engage many disciplines to achieve their goals, including establishment of safe and secure environments, the rule of law, social well- being, stable governance, and sustainable economy. A comprehensive approach to complex operations involves many elements—governmental and nongovernmental, public and private—of the international community or a “whole of community” effort, as well as engagement by many different components of government agencies, or a “whole of government” approach. Taking note of these requirements, a number of studies called for incentives to grow the field of capable scholars and practitioners, and the development of resources for educators, students and practitioners. A 2008 United States Institute of Peace study titled “Sharing the Space” specifically noted the need for case studies and lessons. Gabriel Marcella and Stephen Fought argued for a case-based approach to teaching complex operations in the pages of Joint Forces Quarterly, noting “Case studies force students into the problem; they put a face on history and bring life to theory.” We developed this series

By studying the military techniques, the how of British presence in South Arabia, rather than the political why of that presence, it is hoped that certain lessons might be derived that will act as keys to any study of such security operations in the area. An attempt has been made to limit the consi- derations solely to the area of South Arabia. However, descriptions of military actions which Involve the expendi- ture of wealth and manpower, can never attain the dignity of history un- less larger political and social factors are weighed in the balance as well. Military operations do not exist in a vacuum. The effects of outmoded military techniques and thinking are usually, though not always, fatal. Such shortcomings are evident in the South Arabian operations studied, though each campaign was properly considered successful. The British position deteriorated becauae of Ideological and nationalistic pressures, and not because of military impotence. The very successes that failed to maintain an imperial power in South Arabia are worthy of study if future events in the newly independent states are to be fully Interpreted. Prior to 1962, both the USSR and Egypt had been cultivating alliances with al-Badr in an effort to secure their strategic interests in South Arabia. In the days following the 1962 coup d'état, Abdullah Sallal and his cohort of Yemeni officers established a republic and concealed the fate of al- Badr who had survived an assault on his Sana’a palace and whose supporters had already begun organizing a tribal coalition against the republic.
