TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING SITE VISIT Following deferment for site visits at the meeting of the Area 1 Development Control Committee held on 16th December 2008, Members visited the undermentioned sites prior to their determination at the Committee scheduled for 13th January December 2008: (a) Planning Application No 2008/1730 – Retention and completion of two storey side/rear extension incorporating two dormers in rear roof plane to provide additional living accommodation and retention and completion of extension to patio area at 50 Mumbles Road, Blackpill (b) Planning Application No. 2008/1775 – Erection of a new health and leisure centre with outdoor terracing, swimming pool and landscaping, re – routing of Clyne River Mill Race Channel, creation of new access and remodelling of existing public car park to provide a 250 space public/ private car par, Mill Lane, Blackpill (c) Planning Application No 2008/1843 – Replacement detached bungalow at 152 Mumbles Road, Blackpill. (d) Planning Application Nos 2008/1544 and 2008/1727 – Single storey rear extension with timber decked area and canopy to first floor, rear access doors, extension to existing rear decked area and rear canopy, new external rear staircase, associated works and change of use of first and second floor accommodation to provide four letting bedrooms and variation of condition 02 at Café Valence Newton Road, Mumbles (e) Planning Application No2008/1976 - Detached dwelling on land adjacent to 80 Newton Road, Mumbles. The Monsanto Tribunal is an international civil society initiative to hold Monsanto accountable for human rights violations, for crimes against humanity, and for ecocide. Eminent judges will hear testimonies from victims, and deliver an advisory opinion following procedures of the International Court of Justice. A parallel People's Assembly provides the opportunity for social movements to rally and plan for the future we want. The Tribunal and People's Assembly will take place between 14 and 16 October 2016 in The Hague, Netherlands. Written testimony to the Judges of the Monsanto Tribunal The poisoning of our Nature Reserve by Roundup® and many independent scientific papers that confirm the losses of biodiversity globally It is almost impossible to describe in words the ten-year period since we first established our small nature reserve, so I have sent over two photo-journals for the Judges to examine: Speckled Bush Crickets and The Year of the Bumblebee. I quote from the first paragraph of my article published in the Institute of Science in Society in September 2014: How Roundup® poisoned my Nature Reserve. “In March 2006, UK’s Natural Environment Research Council announced the closure of its wildlife research centres, a decision opposed by 99% of 1,327 stakeholders. Monks Wood Centre, which hosted BBC’s Springwatch, pioneered work on DDT and pesticides in the 1960’s and more recently revealed how climate change is affecting wildlife, with spring arriving three weeks earlier. The research centres were also involved in assessing the impacts of GM (genetically modified) crops on wildlife, with findings contradicting industry claims that no harm would be caused.

The new legislation has introduced significantly tighter water quality standards causing a number of bathing waters to be at risk of not meeting the new minimum classification. The rBWD has four levels of classification: Excellent; Good; Sufficient; and Poor, and all designated bathing waters (BWs) are required to meet at least the Sufficient classification. The classifications are assessed using data collected during the current bathing season and the three preceding bathing seasons, making a four-year rolling assessment period providing approximately 80 samples (4 x 20 samples per year although 16 samples per year will be collected in Wales from 2015). The key aspect of these classifications is that they are assessed statistically over a four bathing-season period to generate a distribution from which the 90 and 95 percentiles (%iles) are determined. The magnitude of bacteria concentrations are therefore now an important component of bathing water performance -unlike the 1976 directive, where each sample taken either passed or exceeded the threshold.

Clyne Valley Country Park
Report of the Gower AONB Team Leader Gower AONB Partnership Steering Group – 29 June 2020 Clyne Valley Country Park Clyne Valley Country Park - on the western fringe of the city - is one of the largest contiguous areas of land in the stewardship of Swansea Council (c.300+ha). Clyne Valley has multiple special features and assets, and is an area easily accessible to much of the city’s population. Clyne Valley became a Country Park in the late 1970s, following Council acquisition of the area and following the recommendations of a strategic planning study in 1978. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1968 gives local authorities the power to provide Country Parks for the purposes of ‘providing, or improving, opportunities for the enjoyment of the countryside by the public’. Clyne Valley Country Park (CVCP) is also a Site of Interest for Nature Conservation (SINC), with significant areas of the following habitats: Broadleaved woodland (including areas of ancient woodland) Semi-natural grasslands that have not been agriculturally improved Permanent and ephemeral ponds Most of the Clyne River system and its tributaries Wet woodland in the adjacent Killay Marsh Local Nature Reserve (LNR) is owned by Swansea Council but leased and managed by the Wildlife Trust for South and West Wales. There is a huge range of species recorded in the area, including otter and a number of bat species roosting and foraging in the valley. The western side of the Country Park is within the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). On the eastern side of the valley, an extensive area above Clyne River is an historic landfill where operations ceased in the 1970s; much of this has been colonised by Japanese Knotweed.

This level site is surrounded by residential properties and by Morriston Hospital further to the south. There is mature vegetation around the site boundaries. Previously open countryside in the UDP, but now proposed to be incorporated within an expanded settlement boundary. Site fell within Morriston ward at time of original candidate site submission, but due to ward boundary changes now lies within Llangyfelach ward. CLYNE CASTLE Ref number PGW (Gm) 47 (SWA) OS Map 159 Grid ref SS 613 905 Former county West Glamorgan Unitary authority City and County of Swansea Community council Mumbles Designations Listed buildings: Clyne Castle Grade II*; Clyne Chapel Grade II; Scheduled Ancient Monuments: Gm 464, Gm 475 Site evaluation Grade I Primary reasons for grading A large and very attractive public park, formerly private and for a long time in the hands of the extremely wealthy and locally prominent Vivian family, in a beautiful situation overlooking Swansea Bay. The park contains an outstanding assemblage of choice and rare mature trees and shrubs, in particular rhododendrons, some of which are original introductions. The park remains more or less intact, although slightly encroached on by university buildings. The wilder Clyne valley, to the north, retains most of its historic layout and some ornamental planting. It is of particular interest for its industrial remains and plantings of choice rhododendrons. Type of site Public park; pleasure grounds; ornamented woodland Main phases of construction 1800-30; 1860-1912; 1912-1952 Site description Clyne Castle is a two-storey castellated mansion, built of randomly laid local sandstone with Forest of Dean stone dressings. It is situated on rising ground on the west side of Swansea Bay, at Black Pill on the outskirts of Swansea, and is orientated north-south, with the original entrance front on the south, facing the bay. The entrance is now to the north of the house, off Mill Lane. The main south front is symmetrical and slightly bowed out, with polygonal turrets flanking the three central bays, canted bays outside them, and on the corners thin cylindrical turrets.
