Vol. 14, No. 60 Wednesday, June 14, 2017 USPS 9400 HONORING By Trishna Buch

The 152nd anniversary of Juneteenth has arrived, and it will be celebrated with several events around Galveston County.

According to an article by the Conventi- on And Visitors Bureau Juneteenth’s official date is June 19. This was the date when, in 1865, enslaved people were freed after Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proc- lamation was “read on a harbor pier in Galveston.” The freeing of the slaves and the reading of the proclamation took place more than two years after Lincoln had signed the proclamation into effect and, in 1980, Juneteenth was declared an official state holiday. According to the GICVB the event is now celebrated by 40 states all around the country. Parades, festivals, picnics, concerts, exhibits and more mark the occasion which changed the lives of individuals across the state. Although the official date of Juneteenth isn’t until Monday, events celebrating and honoring the occasion begin as early as today, Wednesday. Today morning, from 8:30am-noon, children between the ages of six and 18 will be able to attend an event hosted by the Galves- ton Historical Foundation’s African American Heritage Committee. ONCE UPON A TIME, there was a gentleman by the name of Earl Wyatt. He lived over on 19th Avenue and he had a real estate com- pany that did a lot of Residential and Commercial sales in Galveston County and Houston as well. Eventually, he headed to the big city to concentrate on the commercial side but his son Don stuck around and focused on the residential side. And as Texas City grew, so did Wyatt Real Estate. One hou- se at a time, Don Wyatt built his town and his reputation from a small building down on 9th Avenue near 6th Street. And as time went on, his son David joined him and down the road they went. As it happens, times changed, Texas City continued to grow and prosper and soon Wyatt Real Estate had moved up the road to a beautiful new building on 21st Street. Nowadays Wyatt Real Estate, LLC is run by David and his wife Rachel, and they just bought and restored a beautiful home on 19th Avenue, three houses down from where David’s father lived when he was the Wyatt in Wyatt Real Estate. The Village at Tuscan Lakes is presenting an Artisan and Home Dé- cor Market on September 30, 2017 from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Today, we are featuring one of our vendors, Stephen Hegyesi. Stephen was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1951. He grew up in the Houston/Galveston area. Steve became a prin- cipal of WPM Engineering and worked there for 40 years. Some of the local projects that he was involved with include Reliant Stadium, Minute Maid Park and Toyota Center. As a child, Steve was impressed by European skilled craftsmen. Now retired, Steve has taken his engineering skills and combi- ned them with his creativity and eye for art. He is challenged by the complex geometric solutions necessary to construct the intricacy of segmented creations. Please mark your calendars to come and meet Mr. Stephen Hegyesi and to view/purchase his beautiful pieces of art.
