September 11, 2020 Dear Eighth Grade Families: The Freehold Regional High School District offers several Magnet Programs to rising 9th graders. In lieu of the 8th grade presentations typically made at the middle schools in September/October, a series of videos are available on the FRHSD main Magnet Program site and International Baccalaureate site. Students, parents, and guardians can watch all four, or if they are “veterans” to the FRHSD, they can watch the ones most relevant to them. FAQs are also available on the sites. Greetings 1 Greetings from Freehold: How Bruce Springsteen’s Hometown Shaped His Life and Work David Wilson Chairman, Communication Council Monmouth University Glory Days: A Bruce Springsteen Symposium Presented Sept. 26, 2009 Greetings 2 ABSTRACT Bruce Springsteen came back to Freehold, New Jersey, the town where he was raised, to attend the Monmouth County Fair in July 1982. He played with Sonny Kenn and the Wild Ideas, a band whose leader was already a Jersey Shore-area legend. About a year later, he recorded the song "County Fair" with the E Street Band. As this anecdote shows, Freehold never really left Bruce even after he made a name for himself in Asbury Park and went on to worldwide stardom. His experiences there were reflected not only in "County Fair" but also in "My Hometown," the unreleased "In Freehold" and several other songs. He visited a number of times in the decades after his family left for California. Freehold’s relative isolation enabled Bruce to develop his own musical style, derived largely from what he heard on the radio and on records. More generally, the town’s location, history, demographics and economy shaped his life and work. “County Fair,” the first of three sections of this paper, will recount the July 1982 episode and its aftermath. “Growin’ Up,” the second, will review Bruce’s years in Freehold and examine the ways in which the town influenced him. “Goin’ Home,” the third, will highlight instances when he returned in person, in spirit and in song. She has been teaching English at Freehold Township High School since 2001 and has taught across the academic spectrum. She currently teaches English IV and Honors English I. Not only is Ms. English an Administrative Team exemplary educator, she also currently devotes countless hours to the students of Freehold Township High School outside of the classroom. Over the years she has held Principal countless coaching and committee positions, too numerous to list, including taking the Mrs. Elizabeth Higley Girls Field Hockey team to the state sectional championship. Currently, Ms. English is the Head Girls Tennis Coach, JV Girls Basketball Coach and Freshman Softball Coach. As an 8th grader, your child will have a variety of options regarding high school program selection. In addition to the standard high school programs, there are other opportunities for your child to consider, such as the Freehold Regional High School District Magnet Programs and the Monmouth County Vocational School District Career Academies. Attached you will find a brief synopsis of each of these specialized programs. Information for the FRHSD Open Houses and MCVSD Information Sessions will be available in the near future. All programs are highly selective and have a limited number of placements available. The high school directors consider specific criteria such as grade point average, coursework, and timeliness of application filing as significant factors for admission. Please note that it is your child’s responsibility to obtain an application in the Fall 2019 and fulfill all the necessary requirements according to the program’s deadlines. In September, more detailed information will be available, as well as an evening session for parents tentatively scheduled for Back to School Night.
