  • The Musical Number and the Sitcom
ECHO: a music-centered journal www.echo.ucla.edu Volume 5 Issue 1 (Spring 2003) It May Look Like a Living Room…: The Musical Number and the Sitcom By Robin Stilwell Georgetown University 1. They are images firmly established in the common television consciousness of most Americans: Lucy and Ethel stuffing chocolates in their mouths and clothing as they fall hopelessly behind at a confectionary conveyor belt, a sunburned Lucy trying to model a tweed suit, Lucy getting soused on Vitameatavegemin on live television—classic slapstick moments. But what was I Love Lucy about? It was about Lucy trying to “get in the show,” meaning her husband’s nightclub act in the first instance, and, in a pinch, anything else even remotely resembling show business. In The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob Petrie is also in show business, and though his wife, Laura, shows no real desire to “get in the show,” Mary Tyler Moore is given ample opportunity to display her not-insignificant talent for singing and dancing—as are the other cast members—usually in the Petries’ living room. The idealized family home is transformed into, or rather revealed to be, a space of display and performance. 2. These shows, two of the most enduring situation comedies (“sitcoms”) in American television history, feature musical numbers in many episodes. The musical number in television situation comedy is a perhaps surprisingly prevalent phenomenon. In her introduction to genre studies, Jane Feuer uses the example of Indians in Westerns as the sort of surface element that might belong to a genre, even though not every example of the genre might exhibit that element: not every Western has Indians, but Indians are still paradigmatic of the genre (Feuer, “Genre Study” 139).

Now in its fifth season, this year’s lineup of hilarious Off-Broadway hits opens November 5-17 with the North American tour of Spamilton: An American Parody, making its Kansas City premiere. Tickets are on sale now. Created by Gerard Alessandrini, the comic mastermind behind the long-running hit Forbidden Broadway, which played the 2017-18 Starlight Indoors series, Spamilton: An American Parody is a side-splitting new musical parody based on a blockbuster hit of a similar name. After numerous extensions of its run in New York, this hilarious production made a splash in Chicago, Los Angeles and London. Now, Spamilton: An American Parody brings a singing, dancing and comedy revolution to Kansas City. “Spamilton pays a hilarious tribute to its inspiration and is smart, sharp and funny to its core— everything you’d want and more from a spoof of Broadway’s most popular musical,” Caroline Gibel, director of indoor programming at Starlight, said. “The best part is, you don’t have to have seen Hamilton to enjoy Spamilton.

  • The World's Largest and Most Extraordinary Collection
For Immediate Release: THE WORLD’S LARGEST AND MOST EXTRAORDINARY COLLECTION OF SIGNED HOLLYWOOD PHOTOGRAPHS WILL BE OFFERED AT JULIEN’S AUCTIONS IN LOS ANGELES ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2016 Harold Lloyd’s Rogues Gallery of Exclusive Hollywood Autographed Photographs Los Angeles, California – (September 15, 2016) – Julien’s Auctions, the world-record breaking auction house to the stars, will present one of the world’s most extraordinary collections of autographed Hollywood photographs — Harold Lloyd’s Rogues Gallery — on Friday, September 23, 2016 in Los Angeles. The collection features nearly 200 rare, signed photographs from Hollywood’s Golden Era. The auction will take place at the highly-anticipated Icons & Idols: Hollywood auction event that weekend at Julien’s Auction Gallery in Los Angeles. The Rogues Gallery Autograph Collection is the most extensive and unique autograph collection amassed by the silent film star Harold Lloyd and is comprised of the most significant figures of Hollywood’s “Golden Age.” This one-of-a-kind collection is a time capsule of Hollywood, Americana and the politics of the day. “The King of Daredevil Comedy,” Harold Lloyd is best remembered today as the young man dangling desperately from a clock tower in the 1923 classic, “Safety Last.” At the height of his career, Lloyd was one of the most popular and highest-paid stars of his time. He made more films than his contemporaries Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton combined. With hits like his 1922 film “Grandma’s Boy,” Lloyd became a strong force in bringing about the advent of the “feature-length” film. Harold Lloyd’s acting career rose to prominence during the silent film era and spanned 34 years of active filmmaking, over 200 comedies and one 1928 Academy Award nomination.

  • Executive Order 13978 of January 18, 2021
6809 Federal Register Presidential Documents Vol. 86, No. 13 Friday, January 22, 2021 Title 3— Executive Order 13978 of January 18, 2021 The President Building the National Garden of American Heroes By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered as follows: Section 1. Background. In Executive Order 13934 of July 3, 2020 (Building and Rebuilding Monuments to American Heroes), I made it the policy of the United States to establish a statuary park named the National Garden of American Heroes (National Garden). To begin the process of building this new monument to our country’s greatness, I established the Interagency Task Force for Building and Rebuilding Monuments to American Heroes (Task Force) and directed its members to plan for construction of the National Garden. The Task Force has advised me it has completed the first phase of its work and is prepared to move forward. This order revises Executive Order 13934 and provides additional direction for the Task Force. Sec. 2. Purpose. The chronicles of our history show that America is a land of heroes. As I announced during my address at Mount Rushmore, the gates of a beautiful new garden will soon open to the public where the legends of America’s past will be remembered. The National Garden will be built to reflect the awesome splendor of our country’s timeless exceptionalism. It will be a place where citizens, young and old, can renew their vision of greatness and take up the challenge that I gave every American in my first address to Congress, to ‘‘[b]elieve in yourselves, believe in your future, and believe, once more, in America.’’ Across this Nation, belief in the greatness and goodness of America has come under attack in recent months and years by a dangerous anti-American extremism that seeks to dismantle our country’s history, institutions, and very identity.
