No. The only union we shall have in the new world will be the one big union and the president of this union will be a working man chosen from the ranks of the working class. He, being a working man himself, knows all the grievances of his fellow workmates ....God chose him president of the union because he is God's only begotten Son. His name is Jesus. He worked at his trade until He was thirty years of age, then he went out healing the sick, opening the eyes of the blind, raised the dead, and even the poor had the Gospel preached unto them ....Now the Son of God was a carpenter by trade, so he knows how to build mansions for the workers to live in and no tar paper shacks in the new world .... He promised that he would never leave us and never hide his face from us any more forever. That He would give us a comforter that would teach us and help us the right way to live. We shall be one happy family, working, loving and helping one another, and we shall have no idols and no strife, and He even prom~sedthat He would wipe all tears from our faces. Thomas Pinnell, New Toronto, October 19 19 ABSTRACT In March 1919, more than 230 union representatives gathered in Calgary for the Western Labor Conference. There, they initiated plans for a revolutionary industrial organizatin, the One Blg Union, which embodied the internationalist principles of Marxlst unionism. Within its first year, the One Big Union (OBU) issued over 70,000 membership cards, and was a powerful symbol of working-class demands for the end of class exploitation. However, given its patriarchal inheritance, the OBU was always something more than just a class organization. It was an attempt by working men to organize around a specific sense of gender identity, which I have called Marxist masculinity, in order to reconstitute the social bases of male power. The first chapter outlines the events surrounding the creation of the OBU in 1919 and the wave of general strikes that swept through Canada that summer. In particular, it sketches the relationship between class politics and a masculine structure of feeling, and how this relationship influenced the OBU's ideology. The second chapter discusses three elements around which Marxist masculinity was constructed. To begin, the experiences of women in the OBU are situated in relation to the organization's policies regarding membership in individual unions and the Women's Auxilliary. As well, it examines the personal lives of OBU leaders and the naturalized assumptions about heterosexuality which governed their politics. The final chapter discusses the purge of Tom Cassldy and Catherine Rose. two dedicated activists fired because of rumours of their sexual involvement. The OBU leadership wanted to prevent a public moral panic around issues of "free love" and was thus determined to have the matter kept qulet. When anything that challenged the authority of the state – concepts based on enlightenment, immigration, or socialism – were deemed to be a threat to the status quo and immediately eliminated by way of legal restrictions. Once the façade of the Old World was completely severed following the Great War, nations in Europe and throughout the West started to revive various nineteenth century laws in an attempt to suppress the outbreak of radicalism that preceded the 1919 revolutions. What this dissertation offers is an extended understanding of how nineteenth century government policies toward radicalism fostered an environment of increased national security during Germany’s 1919 Spartacist Uprising and the 1919/1920 Palmer Raids in the United States. Using the French Revolution as a starting point, this study allows the reader the opportunity to put events like the 1848 revolutions, the rise of the First and Second Internationals, political fallouts, nineteenth century imperialism, nativism, Social Darwinism, and movements for self-government into a broader historical context.

Jack Kavanagh and the Early Years of the Communist Movement in Vancouver, 1920-1925 David Akers DURINGTHE1919VANCOUVERGENERALSTRIKE, the guardians of conventional 'law and order' in the city, the middle-class Citizens League, bemoaned the evils of "Kavanagh Bolshevism" and its "red-eyed vision of Soviet control."1 Jack Kavanagh — a member of the general strike committee, prominent "platform speaker" for the Socialist Party of Canada (SPC), and the provincial chairman of the One Big Union (OBU) in British Columbia — was a prime target for the establishment backlash against labour militancy in Vancouver.2 Red Scare hysterics aside, Kavanagh did, from October 1917, openly embrace the Russian Revolution and its "proletarian dictatorship," as he labelled the Soviet 'Vancouver Citizen, 25 June 1919. Working-class boys and girls went to work because their families needed their earnings to make ends meet and because employers required a cheap and productive workforce. The visibility of urban child labourers and their harsh working conditions attracted the attention of local progressive-minded reformers. These men and women endorsed a collectivist philosophy which downplayed individual rights and stressed the need for state intervention in the private sphere to improve social conditions.

FRAGER ‘‘No nation is supposed to be so advanced as the British nation, no race so progressive as the white’’, declared Cotton’s Weekly, the newspaper of the Social Democratic Party of Canada. ‘‘BUT HERE IN TORONTO NO CHINESE, NO HINDOOS, NO JAPS, NO INDIANS, NO BLACKS, NO FOREIGNERS NEED BE IMPORTED. WHITE GIRLS AND MEN OF BRITISH BIRTH BREAK THE STRIKES.’’1 It was 1911. The newspaper was commenting on strike-breaking by ‘‘white’’ workers during a strike at a Toronto garment factory where male and female Jews had walked out. The newspaper compared this with cases out West: ‘‘In British Columbia when miners rise up in rebellion against the shameful conditions, Chinese are brought into the mines. In this and other western provinces, Japs, Hindoos, and Indians fill the places of the white toilers because they live on cheaper food and under such intolerable conditions no white people can stand it.’’2 Focusing on the Toronto strike, the newspaper’s disgust with those who refused to join ‘‘strikers who are brave enough to struggle for human treat- ment’’3 centred on the cutters, who were skilled Anglo-Celtic males, and on the Anglo-Celtic female strike-breakers. ‘‘Craft Unionism was shown up as selfish’’, declared the paper, not only because these cutters scabbed but also because English-speaking men from other craft unions refused the Jewish strikers’ request to try to persuade the cutters to join the strike.4 Women * I thank Lynne Marks, Carmela Patrias, and Don Wells for all their help.

    Documenting Working Class History: North American Traditions and New Approaches Recently British working class historian E.J. Hobsbawm began an important theoretical paper on the state of the discipline with the assertion that "labour history is today flourishing in most countries as never before."' This is certainly true in Canada where the last five years have witnessed a remarkable renaissance in working class studies. The political upheavals of the 1960s, the increased militancy of the Canadian working class, and the structural problems of world capitalism have led to a significant new interest in working class history. This paper surveys briefly the history of North American labour studies and labour archives, and then turns to late nineteenth-century Toronto for examples of interest areas for archival work to aid the new working class history. 1 A short account of the North American archival traditions concerning working class materials must blend intellectual, political and working class history. In the late nineteenth century, class conflict helped generate an intellectual curiosity and concern that led to the first serious attempts to collect labour materials. Out of the post-Civil War class struggles in the United States came the first states' bureaus of labour statistics which represented an initial effort to gather data on the American workers who were staffing the factories of a rising industrial capitalism. In Canada a similar type of data collection began a decade later with the Ontario Bureau of Industry Reports. On both sides of the border these institutions were initially staffed by labour activists and the information that they collected and published demonstrated contemporary working class concerns about standard of living.

    FORUM W[H]ITHER LABOUR HISTORY Regionalism, Class, and the Writing of BC History MARKLEIER s BC LABOUR HISTORY IN DECLINE? Certainly it is fashionable everywhere today to claim that labour history has had its day. Yet I in Canada every regional journal and most wider journals, such as the Canadian Historical Review and Histoire Sociale, regularly publish articles in the field of labour history. And there is, of course, a first- class journal, Labour/Le Travail, that is devoted to labour and work­ ing-class history. As other fields complain about the lack of synthesiz­ ing works, Canadian labour history has produced three: Desmond Morton's Working People, now in its third edition; Craig Heron's The Canadian Labour Movement', and Bryan Palmer's Working Class Expe­ rience, now in its second edition.1 In BC, we have a long tradition of producing book-length histories of the labour movement, starting with the work of Communist Party of Canada (CPC) writers William Bennett and Harold Griffin, through Paul Phillips's No Power Greater, to the work by former CPC member Jack Scott in the 1970s.2 Articles, theses, and books on BC labour history make up a * This is a revised version of a paper presented to the New Directions in BC History Conference, May 1995, University of Northern British Columbia.     Reviews Essays/Notes critiques Working-Class History in English Canada in the 1980s: An Assessment SLIGHTLY MORE THAN A DECADE AGO "the new working-class history" emerged in Canada. It was an occasion marked by considerable enthusiasm as ringing manifestos promised "to bring back ordinary working people from their long exile on the margins of Canadian history".1 Existing institutional histories of trade unions and industrial relations, it was pointed out, told us remarkably little about the experience of workers or, in more general terms, about the nature of social class in Canadian history. On the basis of this critique of the existing historiography, a new generation of working-class historians set out an ambitious agenda. The complexity of workers' experience could only be understood in its totality, requiring an understanding of social relations as they evolved within workplaces, neighbourhoods, ethnic and fraternal associations, political parties, and (as somewhat of an afterthought) families. Only this level of investigation could reveal the myriad of interconnections which provide the texture of what historians were coming to recognize as an autonomous working-class culture. Herein lay the key to understanding working-class activity. Naturally, this was a tall order. Labour historians were challenged to move far beyond the bounds of trade unions and labour parties to understand class-based behaviour. And, in the 1980s, the order continued to grow taller. An interest in workers' daily life soon meshed with feminist historians' concern to understand the determinants of women's position in both the workplace and society. The two forms of women's participation in production, as (often temporary) paid workers in the labour force and as unpaid domestic workers in the household, it was soon apparent, could not be viewed in isolation from each other.
