This year, Integral Yoga ® celeates a half century of service. It was the summer of 1966 in New York City when the Pop Art icon Peter Max introduced his friends— a lively group of artists, photographers, musicians, and hip and aware folks—to Sri Swami Satchidananda, who had arrived for a two-day visit arranged by the filmmaker Conrad Rooks. It took only a few evenings in that Yoga master’s company and some of his beautiful Yoga classes to inspire the group to request him to extend his stay. Swami Satchidananda agreed and began to teach classes in Hatha Yoga, lead Kirtans, and give talks—all from his temporary residence at the Oliver Cromwell Hotel. Soon, his enthusiastic students rented a larger apartment, at 500 West End Avenue, and founded the Integral Yoga Institute on October 7, 1966. In 1970, Integral Yoga moved to West 13th Street in Greenwich Village. The rest is history. Today, Integral Yoga institutes, centers, and teachers serve the world on six of the seven continents. Our teachers continue to develop specialized Yoga practices for every population and environment— all the while maintaining a deep reverence for the classical foundations and integrity of the Integral Yoga tradition given to us by Sri Swami Satchidananda. Why has Integral Yoga been around for 50 years? Because of you. Thank you for allowing us to serve you. 50 Years of Peaceful Practice— the sublime Integral Yoga class for every body and every condition 50 Years of Interfaith Teachings— “Truth Is One, Paths Are Many” 50 Years of Vegetarian Living— a sustainable and healthful diet for each of us and our planet 50 Years of Natural Health— managing stress as the best medicine Swami Satchidanandaji Maharaj His Holiness Sri Swami Satchidanandaji Maharaj FHunadamtehntaa ls oYf Inotegraa l Yoga (Sri Gurudev) founded Integral Yoga ® in 1966, the 4-Week Course for Beginners $80 worldwide Integral Yoga Institutes, and Satchidananda Mon., Mar. 7–28 • 6:15–8:15 p.m. Rev. • The Rise of Bengali Yoga (Excerpt from Sun, Moon and Earth: the Sacred Relationship of Yoga and Ayurveda)
The Rise of Bengali Yoga (Excerpt from Sun, Moon and Earth: The Sacred Relationship of Yoga and Ayurveda) By Mas Vidal To set the stage for a moment, the state of Bengal is an eastern state of India and is one of the most densely populated regions on the planet. It is home to the Ganges river delta at the confluence of the Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers. Rivers have always been a sacred part of yoga and the Indian lifestyle. The capital of Bengal is Kolkata, which was the center of the Indian independence movement. As yoga began to expand at the turn of the century through the 1950s, as a counter-cultural force opposed to British occupation, the region also struggled against a tremendous set-back, the Great Bengal Famine of 1943- 44, which took an estimated two to three million lives. India battled through this and eventually gained independence in 1947. Bengal managed to become a womb for bhakti yogis and the nectar that would sustain the renaissance of yoga in India and across the globe. Bengali seers like Sri Aurobindo promoted yoga as an integral system, a way of life that cultivated a dynamic relationship between mind, body, and soul. Some of the many styles of yoga that provide this pure synthesis remain extant in India, but only through a few living yoga teachers and lineages. This synthesis may even still exist sporadically in commercial yoga. One of the most influential figures of yoga in the West was Paramahansa Yogananda, who formulated a practical means of integrating ancient themes and techniques for the spiritual growth of people in Western societies, and for Eastern cultures to reestablish their balance between spirituality and the material.

  • Alignment Yoga
Alignment Yoga Advanced Studies/ Teacher Training with Scott Anderson 2010/11 www.AlignmentYoga.com Welcome to Alignment Yoga Thank you for examining Alignment Yoga’s Advanced Studies Program. Whether you desire a deepening understanding of your practice and/or aspire to teach, we have the experience and expertise to facilitate your growth. This program is based on Scott Anderson’s more than 20 years of teaching and 15 years training teachers. Participants will receive extensive instruction in the art & science of Hatha Yoga and the skills needed to safely & competently teach this ancient practice. Many yoga schools teach the outer form of yoga postures (a knee here, an elbow there…), but neglect teaching the art of modifying the techniques to the needs of individuals. We emphasize that form follows function in the practice of Hatha Yoga. Rather than memorizing endless names and details, you will be encouraged to think for yourself as you refine your observational skills. We firmly believe, to paraphrase the old adage, it’s better to teach a man to fish than to simply give him a fish to eat. Trying to be everything to everybody generally dooms an endeavor to mediocrity. Every program director is thus faced with choices – their priority list, so to speak. While our program complies faithfully with Yoga Alliance National Certification Guidelines, we’ve placed particular emphasis in two areas. • Our exploration of the techniques of asana, pranayama, bandha and kriya are comprehensive and backed with a rigorous study of anatomy & physiology. You will understand not only the inner workings of these techniques, but develop an extensive array of techniques to transmit your understanding to your students.

Sri Aurobindo’s concept of the integral yoga is very comprehensive. He had a clear system of practice that he called integral yoga, as it was based on a synthesis of different paths of yoga.

Sri Aurobindo's Formulations of the Integral Yoga Debashish Banerji California Institute of Integral Studies San Francisco, CA, USA Sri Aurobindo Ghose (1872–1950) developed, practiced and taught a form of yoga, which he named integral yoga. If one peruses the texts he has written pertaining to his teaching, one finds a variety of models, goals, and practices which may be termed formulations or versions of the integral yoga. This article compares three such formulations, aiming to determine whether these are the same, but in different words, as meant for different audiences, or whether they represent different understandings of the yoga based on changing perceptions.
