Im back here with some details about one company. It is one of the famous automobile company in India. These days i have been posting about some international companies but now im here to post about an indian company. The company is Hero Honda. If we go in to the details. Here they are...... Hero Honda Motors Ltd. is the world's largest manufacturer of two – wheelers, based in India. The company is a joint venture between India's Hero Group and Honda Motor Company, Japan that began in 1984. In 2001, the company achieved the coveted position of being the largest two-wheeler manufacturing company in India and the „World No.1‟ two-wheeler company in terms of unit volume sales in a calendar year by a single company. Hero Honda has retained that coveted position till date. Today, every second motorcycle sold in the country is a Hero Honda bike. Every 30 seconds, someone in India buys Hero Honda's top-selling motorcycle – Splendor. It has been referred to as the world's biggest manufacturer of 2-wheeled motorized vehicles since 2001, when it produced 1.3 million motorbikes in a single year. During the fiscal year 2008-09, the company has sold 3.28 million bikes and the net profit of the company stood at 1,281.7 crore (US$ 290.95 million) up 32% from the previous fiscal year. The company's most popular model is the Hero Honda Splendor, which is the world's largest-selling motorcycle, selling more than one million units per year. Hero Honda has been the largest two wheeler company in the world for nine consecutive years. The company had a market share of 41.35% in the year 2008-2009 and over a 25 year span it has crossed the 15 million unit milestone. Hero Honda sells more two wheelers than the second, third and fourth placed two-wheeler companies put together. Company Profile “Hero” is the brand name used by the Munjal brothers for their flagship company Hero Cycles Ltd. A joint venture between the Hero Group and Honda Motor Company was established in 1984 as the Hero Honda Motors Limited At Dharuhera India. During the 1980s, the company introduced motorcycles that were popular in India for their fuel economy and low cost. A popular advertising campaign based on the slogan 'Fill it - Shut it - Forget it' that emphasised the motorcycle's fuel efficiency helped the company grow at a double-digit pace since inception. Hero Honda has three manufacturing facilities based at Dharuhera and Gurgaon in HaryanaHaridwar in Uttarakhand. These plants together are capable of churning out 3.9 million bikes per year.Hero Honda's has a large sales and service network with over 3,000 dealerships and service points across India. Hero and at Honda's customer loyalty program,[clarification needed] the Hero Honda Passport Program, claims to be one of the largest programs of its kind in the world with over 3 million members. The 2006 Forbes 200 Most Respected companies list has Hero Honda Motors ranked at 108. History India became the second largest two wheeler manufacturer in the world and starting in the 1950s with the Automobile Products of India (API) that manufactured the Lambrettas and Bajaj Auto Ltd. with its association with Piaggio of Italy (manufacturer of Vespa scooters) as the largest manufacturers within the country. The license raj that existed between the 1940s to 1980s in India did not allow foreign companies to enter the market and imports were tightly controlled. This regulatory maze, before the economic liberalization, made business easier for local players to have a seller‟s market. Customers in India were forced to wait up to 12 years to buy a scooter from Bajaj. The CEO of Bajaj commented that he did not need a marketing department, only a dispatch department. By the year 1990, Bajaj had a waiting list that was twenty-six times its annual output for scooters. The motorcycle segment had the same long wait times with three manufacturers: Royal Enfield, Ideal Jawa, and Escorts. Royal Enfield made a 350cc Bullet with the only four-stroke engine at that time and took the higher end of the market but there was little competition for their customers. Ideal Jawa and Escorts took the middle and lower end of the market respectively. In the mid-1980s, the Indian government regulations changed and permitted foreign companies to enter the Indian market through minority joint ventures. The two- wheeler market changed with four Indo-Japanese joint ventures: Hero Honda, TVS Suzuki, Bajaj Kawasaki and Kinetic Motor Company (Kinetic Honda). The entry of these foreign companies changed the Indian market dynamics from the supply side to the demand side. With a larger selection of two-wheelers on the Indian market, consumers started to gain influence over the products they bought and raised higher customer expectations. The industry produced more models, styling options, prices, and different fuel efficiencies. The foreign companies new technologies helped make the products more reliable and with better quality. Indian companies had to change to keep up with their global counterparts. Diversification The Group Chairman, Mr. Brij Mohan Lall Munjal has actively looked at diversification. A considerable level of vertical integration in its manufacturing activities has been present in the Group's growth and led to the establishment of the Hero Cycles Cold Rolling Division, Munjal and Sunbeam Castings, Munjal Auto Components and Munjal Showa Limited amongst other component-manufacturing units. Expansion into the automotive segment started with the setting up of Majestic Auto Limited, where the first moped designed entirely in India, Hero Majestic, went into commercial production in 1978. Hero Motors, in collaboration with Steyr Daimler Puch of Austria introduced the which introduced another moped, the Hero Puch, in 1980. Hero Honda Motors was established in 1984 to manufacture 100 cc motorcycles. The Hero Group also plans to expand into other segments like exports, financial services, information technology, insurance and telecommunication. Vision The Hero Honda story began with a simple vision – the vision of a mobile and an empowered India, powered by Hero Honda. This vision was driven by Hero Honda‟s commitment to customer, quality and excellence, and while doing so, maintaining the highest standards of ethics and societal responsibilities. Hero Honda believes that the fastest way to turn that dream into a reality is by remaining focused on that vision. Brand The company has been continuously investing in brand building utilizing not only the new product launch and new campaign launch opportunities but also through innovative marketing initiatives revolving around cricket, entertainment and ground- level activation. Hero Honda has been actively promoting various sports such as hockey, cricket and golf. Hero Honda was the title sponsor of the Hero Honda FIH Hockey World Cup that was played in Delhi during Feb-March 2010. Hero Honda also partners the Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010. 2009-10 Performance Total unit sales of 46,00,130 two-wheelers, growth of 23.6 per cent Total net operating income of Rs. 15860.51 Crores, growth of 28.1 per cent Net profit after tax at Rs. 2231.83 Crores, growth of 74.1 per cent Final dividend of 1500% or Rs. 30 per share on face value of each share of Rs. 2 EBIDTA margin for the year 17.4 per cent EPS of Rs. 111.77, growth of 74.1 per cent Hero Honda Motors Ltd. INTORDUCTION 1 “THE STUDY OF CONSUMER BUYING BEHAVIOUR IN MID SEGMENT MOTOR BIKES WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO HONDA SPLENDOR” 2 HISTORY OF TWO WHEELERS Who invented the first motorcycle? It seems like a simple question .But the answer is a bit complicated. Just as the automobile was the answer to the 19th century dream of self-propelling the horse drawn carriage, the invention of motorcycle was creation of self-propelled bicycle. The person credited with building the first motorcycle in 1885 was Gottliet Daimler (who later teamed up with Karl Benz to form She Daimler Bens corp.) The gasoline runs vehicle had one wheel in the front and at the back (rear) with a smaller, spring-loaded outrigger wheel on each side. The motorcycle was constructed of wood, with the wheel cast out of iron and spokes of kandeel wood. Definitely it was a “bone-crusher” chassis. Hiberland & Munich planned the first successful two-wheeler in 1894. It had a step through frame, with its fuel tank mounted on the down lube. The engine was a parallel twin, mounted low on frame with its cylinder going to the fore. In 1916 the Indian Motorcycle Company introduced first Motorcycle model H racer, and placed it on sale at the astronomical price of $350.It featured overhead value with valves per cylinder, and was easily capable of speeds of 120 mph during World War II . All branches of the armed force in Europe used motorcycles principally for dispatching. After the war it enjoyed a sport vogue until the great depression of 1929.

ERIA-DP-2015-24 ERIA Discussion Paper Series The Indian Automotive Industry and the ASEAN Supply Chain Relations Tristan Leo Dallo AGUSTIN Mitsubishi Fuso Martin SCHRÖDER Research Institute of Auto Parts Industries, Waseda University March 2015 Abstract: The topic of automotive supply chains has been increasingly studied as it raises questions of economic development, especially from the perspectives of simultaneous globalisation and regionalisation, and trade. While ASEAN is a prime example of intraregional production networks, supply chains that connect ASEAN and India have not been studied indepth. Therefore, this paper investigates the Indian automotive industry, which is composed of automobile original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and parts and components producers, and other supply chain connections to the neighbouring ASEAN region. This study is structured as follows. First, we will take a look at the historic development of the automotive industry in India, as it provides the context for the development of companies and their capabilities that are crucial determinants for their ability to join supply chains. The investigation will not be limited to Indian firms because as case studies of the ASEAN region forcefully demonstrate, foreign OEMs and parts suppliers may use developing and emerging markets as specialised production bases of their global and regional supply chains. Second, against the historic background, the current condition of the automotive industry in India will be analysed by discussing industry data. Third, we will conduct case studies of automotive companies from India, Japan, and South Korea to investigate how India and ASEAN are connected through supply chains and determine which chains integrate Indian companies.
