The Episcopal of the Nativity The Window Volume 20, Issue 70 December 1, 2014

From the Rector: “Sshhh! Quiet. It’s Advent” read the sign in the hallway. I found it weird to read those words. Certainly, Advent is a season of preparation, of anticipation, of making room in our hearts for the im- pending Nativity of the Lord. Yet, I never really regarded it as a time that was meant for silence. Truthfully, I bristled when I read those words. I’ve never especially liked being shushed. It always feels as though I’m being chastised by a pa- rental figure. I have resisted mightily the urge to tell our children to use their inside voices. But as they grow and the volume level of two toddlers shouting becomes more common at our house, I find myself falling into those same patterns that my parents, and theirs before them, and generations of moms and dads have used. Asking them to hush while others speak has become a regular phrase. I find myself needing some peace in the din. Increasingly, our Christmas season is stretched out before us. By the day the Nativity finally arrives, many of us are almost sick to death of Jingle Bells in the stores, Salvation Army ringers, holiday specials on television, and every other facet of our lives which are penetrated by the Christmas advertising blitz. The noise surrounding this blessed event has grown and grown. I recall fondly a time from my early childhood when stores at least waited until after Thanksgiv- ing to put out Christmas decoration. This year, when I went out shopping for Halloween candy, there were already Christmas displays in multiple stores. Over the years I have found myself becoming more and more of an Advent Grinch, grumbling and complaining about the encroachment of Christ- mas outside of its twelve day season beginning on December 25th. But rather than curse the darkness of the overwhelming drive in our culture to start Christmas in the summer time, this year, I hope to light a candle. In the midst of finalizing the remodeling and then moving into the rectory, Christmas parties, various gift ingatherings, and everything else, I am carving out some intentional time to be quiet. I am making some time to be quiet in the presence of my Father in heaven, so I can tune in to the words he is speaking to his people. I invite you to the same. I pray that in the “busy-ness” of your December that you will join us for worship. Come and hear the stories that make this feast of the church such an extraordinary time. The lessons on the Sundays of Advent speak to us of the desire for God to return. The selections remind us of how to live as though that return were imminent. takes us through the ways in which the world was made ready for the coming of the , the incarnation of our Living God. Each Sunday offers some way to reflect on the annual celebration of the Incarnation of our sav- ior Jesus Christ. Lessons and Carols on December 7th will rehearse the story which we prepare to hear again. If we take our time to prepare, then we can hear the stories as if they were being told for the first time. If we will be quiet and allow the tender voice of God to proclaim the coming of the Lord, then the story of the Nativity can be rich and powerful. If our lives and schedules crowd out our ability to listen intently to the voice of God calling us to “let every heart prepare him room” then we lose the fullness of the joy which comes with this season. May you find the time to prepare to receive the Word made flesh this Christmas. In future issues of the Window, look for articles on the role each plays in the spiritual life of Nativity! Daughters of the King The Nativity chapter of Daughters of the King last month celebrated their 30th anniversary. The Daughters of the King is an order for women who are communicants of the Episcopal Church or churches in the historic episcopate. It was founded in 1855 and has chapters worldwide. Members undertake a Rule of Life, which includes the Rule of Prayer and the Rule of Service. By reaffirmation of the promises made at and , Daughters pledge themselves to a life-long program of prayer, service and evangelism, dedicated to the spread of Christ’s Kingdom and the strengthening of the spiritual life of her parish. The Nativity DOK chapter has been active for 30 years. Daughters pray daily for those whose needs and thanksgivings have been made known to us. We serve by rendering aid to the clergy, sponsoring Quiet Days, and making a conscious effort to reach out to others. We also have an on-going ministry of sending cards to shut-ins and those on our parish prayer list. We wear our little silver crosses as a daily reminder of our vows. Any confirmed woman in communion with the Episcopal Church is welcome to become a Daughter. It takes a commitment to prayer and service. The Nativity Chapter of the DOK meets the third Sunday of the month at 9 a.m. in the Parish Hall Parlor. Under the new leadership of Gloria Stabler, president, we are taking altar flowers and visiting shut-ins, as well as providing a welcome treat to newcomers at Nativity. The Motto of the Order expresses our calling:

For His Sake I am but one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. What I can do, I ought to do. What I ought to do, by the grace of God, I will do. Lord, what will you have me do? Music Notes We all like to welcome visitors, especially those who are close to us and those we love, and we sometimes find the waiting difficult. So we use the waiting time to make our preparations. The same is true for our Christian Family. We call this season “Advent” which means “coming”. Advent is the time of year when we prepare ourselves, as a Church and as individual Chris- tians, for the coming of Jesus – through scripture and music. This year, we will offer Advent Lessons and Carols on Sunday, Dec. 7, at the 10:30 a.m. Service. The design of this meditative service interweaving a collection of lessons with music came about in the early part of the last century, when a sense arose of the need to retell in new ways the stories behind the major events in the life of the Christian church. The first carols service to be offered in the United States took place at Appleton Chapel in Harvard Yard in December of 1909. All of the scriptures, carols and anthems were chosen with the Nativity congregation in mind, to emphasize the lessons and tell the story of Advent in music that is familiar and close to our hearts. As we worship together on Dec. 7, we are joining with millions around the world that look to the Lessons and Carols Services to tell the story of Jesus. Through the use of radio, internet, and other media, it is estimated that the Lessons and Carols Services are the single most familiar service in Chris- tian Worship. Come worship with us on Dec. 7, as “we prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the angels .”

For the Advent Season, we will adjust our music during the service. We will sing Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy) instead of the Gloria and Agnus Dei (Jesus, Lamb of God) in place of the Fraction Anthem. The Gospel Alleluia will be omitted during Advent. For this season, we will sing the Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei to the French hymn tune O Come, O Come Emmanuel. It will be easy to sing and emphasis Advent each week. The congregation plays a vital part in singing so please follow the insert and sing out! We will have a string quartet for the Lessons and Carols Service and Emily Fincher will again bless us with her beautiful voice. For the Christmas Services, we will have violin, adult choir and children’s choir at the 3 p.m. service. For the evening service, we will have string quartet again, with an extended prelude beginning at 10:30 p.m. for the 11 Service. This prelude will feature the strings, solos, and the choir. Please come and celebrate the Advent and Christmas Season – make a joyful noise, all ye lands! Love in Christ, Debbie Greening of the Church

The Greening of the Church is scheduled for Sunday, December 21 at 3 p.m. The Greening of the Church (a very ancient Christmas custom) always helps to get our focus on what Christ- mas is all about. Come join the fun and help make our Church even more beautiful for this important feast day.

Angel Tree Ingathering For several years, Nativity has taken part in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree where we buy Christmas presents for children who might otherwise not have pre- sents on Christmas morning. This year, we will be gathering in the Parish Hall to collect our Angels’ presents for delivery to the Salvation Army at 5 p.m., December 14. At the same time, Debbie Deas will lead us in singing Christmas Carols. The EYC will be cooking dinner for everyone. Whether you are taking part in the Angel Tree program or not, this is a wonderful opportunity to get together, enjoy good company, good food and some rousing Carol singing. Santa for Seniors December 7, 2014 For the second year, Nativity is taking part in SARCOAs (South Alabama Regional Council on Aging) Santa for Seniors program. Thank you to all who are ‘sponsoring’ a senior this year. In order to get the gifts to SARCOA for distribution before Christmas, we will be collecting the gifts after services on Sunday, Decemer 7.

Nativity Prayer Tree For the last couple of years, Nativity has had a traditional Christmas tree in the entry to the Parish Hall. Every year, we ask each family to donate a cross representing your family to hang as an ornament on the tree. If you did not participate before and would like to, or if you want to include another family member, the cross will need to be 7-inches or less but can be any style or color. There will also be crosses available for purchase after Church on Sundays. For more information, contact Kathleen Rane at 334-714-1737 or [email protected]. UTO Ingathering The UTO Ingathering November 23 raised $525 for the United Thank Offering. United Thank Offering is a ministry of The Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity. United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout The Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world.

For the past 18 years, a group of people have gotten together to do what has come to be known as “Turkeys from Heaven”. On Tuesday, December 23rd, we will meet at The Wiregrass Museum of Art, located on Museum Boulevard directly behind The Dothan Civic Center, to smoke turkeys, make green bean casseroles, pack rolls and cranberry sauce and deliver Christmas meals. We have a great time getting a taste of the spirit of Christmas- GIVING TO OTHERS! If you are interested in helping, either by donating turkeys, dessert, money (it is cheaper to buy the beans and things in bulk!) or your time, we would love it! If you would like to purchase turkeys for this project visit Publix on Ross Clark Circle by Home Depot. They will allow you to purchase turkeys but leave them there to be thawed the morning of the 23rd so they are ready to cook. Just ask at the check out and they will have a barcode to scan for the turkeys. The cost of each turkey is approximately $15. We are going to try to make 2,000 meals this year. The names will come from the Salvation Army, The House of Ruth, The Rescue Mis- sion, DHR, Hospice, Red Cross, United Way and local churches. Please contact Rebecca Marsella 797- 9376 or [email protected] by December 19th if you are interested in helping or have any names of people who could benefit from the meals. . If you would like to work, we will begin cooking at 8 a.m. and the deliveries will begin about noon. If you would like to assist in cooking the turkeys or running a grill contact Harry Hall at hhall@fphw_law.com or 334-797-9378. We need to know who is bringing what and when you can help so that we will have everything in order for the 23rd. This is a great way to really get into the Christmas spirit. We will begin the assembly line at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning and keep it going until we are finished!
