Today, Americans are learning that national park designation alone cannot provide full resource protection. Grosscup Boundary of the Panamint The Panamint Shoshone, also referred to as the Panamint, Koso (Coso) and Shoshone of eastern California, lived in that portion of the Basin and Range Province which extends from the Sierra Nevadas on the west to the Amargosa Desert of eastern Nevada on the east, and from Owens Valley and Fish Lake Valley in the north to an ill- defined boundary in the south shared with Southern Paiute groups. These boundaries will be discussed below. Previous attempts to define the Panamint Shoshone boundary have been made by Kroeber (1925), Steward (1933, 1937, 1938, 1939 and 1941) and Driver (1937). Others, who have worked with some of the groups which border the Panamint Shoshone, have something to say about the common boundary between the group of their special interest and the Panamint Shoshone (e.g., Voegelin 1938; Zigmond 1938; and Kelly 1934). Kroeber (1925: 589-560) wrote: "The territory of the westernmost member of this group [the Shoshone], our Koso, who form as it were the head of a serpent that curves across the map for 1, 500 miles, is one of the largest of any Californian people. It was also perhaps the most thinly populated, and one of the least defined. If there were boundaries, they are not known. To the west the crest of the Sierra has been assumed as the limit of the Koso toward the Tubatulabal. On the north were the eastern Mono of Owens River.

Laudenslayer, Jr. i INTRODUCTION i \ 1 The term, "California desert", as used herein, refers to a politically defined region, most of i which is included in the California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA) designated by the Federal Land ; and Management Act of 1976 (FLPMA). Of the 25 million acres in the CDCA, about one-half are i public lands, most of which are managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) according to the "980 P California Desert Conservation Area Plan mandated by FLPMA. The California desert encompasses those portions of the Great Basin Desert (east of the White and lnyo Mountains and A south of the California-Nevada border), the Mojave Desert, and the Colorado Desert which occur " within California; it does not include areas of riparian, aquatic, urban, and agricultural habitats . adjacent to the Colorado River. Records exist for at least 425 species (Garrett and Dunn 1981) from 18 orders and 55 families. These counts far exceed those for mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish, and they are similar to totals for the entire state -- 542 species from 20 orders and 65 families (Laudenslayer and Grenfell 1983). These figures may seem surprisingly similar considering the harsh, arid climates often believed characteristic of I desert environments. However, habiiats found in the California desert range from open water and h marshes at the Salton Sea to pinyon-juniper woodland and limber pinelbristlecone pine forests on a few mountain ranges.

Strangely shaped trees cast long shadows on the sides of the simple wooden ranch structures. Animal tracks in the sand tell of the previous night's adventures when scorpions, kangaroo rats, snakes, and bobcats battled for survival. This seemingly hostile desert environment was settled much later than other more productive areas of the West. Yet it was here, in 1917, that Bill Keys chose to establish a ranch and raise a family. Keys and other 20th-century homesteaders lived much as earlier pioneers in the West had, working hard to make their marginal land holdings successful. Today, Keys Ranch is preserved as part of Joshua Tree National Park. Objectives for this inventory were to: 1) Inventory and document the occurrence of reptile and amphibian species occurring at DEVA, primarily within priority sampling areas, with the goal of documenting at least 90% of the species present; 2) document (through collection or museum specimen and literature review) one voucher specimen for each species identified; 3) provide a GIS-referenced list of sensitive species that are federally or state listed, rare, or worthy of special consideration that occur within priority sampling locations; 4) describe park-wide distribution of federally- or state-listed, rare, or special concern species; 5) enter all species data into the National Park Service NPSpecies database; and 6) provide all deliverables as outlined in the Mojave Network Biological Inventory Study Plan. Methods included daytime and nighttime visual encounter surveys, road driving, and pitfall trapping. Survey effort was concentrated in predetermined priority sampling areas, as well as in areas with a high potential for detecting undocumented species.

    Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park Course Catalog Spring 2018 Welcome to Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park It is hard to believe that it was almost 20 years ago that the Joshua Tree National Park Association be- gan a unique experiment to find a way to connect people who were passionate about their park with some of the finest educators in the Southland. The Desert Institute was born to provide the in-depth knowledge that so many of our annual visitors and local residents were clamoring for: day-long classes that go beyond the basics and really immerse the learners in the natural and cultural history that make Joshua Tree such a special place. I remember working here as a journeymen ranger when the first classes were offered back in 1998. That first year, we offered five weekend classes on natural history. Who would have dreamed that twenty years later we would be offering dozens of courses that span the spectrum from desert cooking to smart phone photography to bighorn sheep habitat? One of the exciting new offerings is the Joshua Tree Master Naturalist certificate program. Students who take classes for college credit can also be enrolled in a certification program that is invaluable for educators, naturalists, and guides. What will the next 20 years bring? With your help and feedback, I’m looking forward to this program evolving to continue to meet the changing needs and passions of all of us who are excited to learn about the incredible place we have chosen to call home.

There remain four large vertical shafts which historical data indicates were the range of 65 to ?5 feet in depth, five inclined shafts of about 35 to U5 degree and ten adits to horizontal tunnels, five of which have suffered considerable decay, three being nearly entirely sealed off.

The land that was added by the legislation is mainly adjacent to backcountry and wilderness areas. It is largely undeveloped and its management will be addressed in the wilderness and backcountry management plan currently being developed, which will serve as an amendment to this plan. This general management plan addresses only the land that was included prior to the 1994 legislation. This General Management Plan / Development Concept Plans / Environmental Impact Statement was prepared in order to offer a proposal and two alternatives for the management, use, and development of Joshua Tree National Park. In this plan, which affects mainly the developed areas of the park, the proposal calls for a change of management and use to more adequately protect and interpret significant resources. The proposed action would result in an increased visitor awareness of opportunities and a broader range of visitor choices and experiences. Visitor contact facilities and services would be provided at each of the three main park entrances. Interpretive programs and the system of wayside exhibits would be expanded. Resource management programs would also be increased.
