3 GENERAL INFORMATION

Packing Please use the "Packing Checklist", on page 26. We have minimized the list to what you need, so please don’t consider any of the items optional unless listed as such.

Electronic Devices While modern technology (cell phones, computers, DVD players, iPods, MP3 players, PDAs, etc.) can be very helpful and add to our way of life, there are times when they can distract team members from their ministry.

The following policies apply: Laptop computers, iPads, Nooks, DVD Players, etc: These and other devices are not allowed on NET teams. They have become major distractions to our teams and have been detrimental to the community life we try to foster on NET teams.

Cell Phones Like laptops, cell phones have proven to be distracting to the life and ministry of NET teams. While we do allow you to bring a cell phone please realize your ability to use it will be limited.

During the five-week training period, you will only have access to your cell phones on two or three days. During your time on the road, we require that your cell phone be completely off throughout much of the day.

• On a side note, this means you must bring a separate watch and alarm clock when you arrive in August.

Knives Because NET Team Members frequently minister in school environments, knives (as well as any kind of weapon) of any kind are not allowed on NET.

Suitcase When choosing a suitcase, keep in mind you will be required to carry this suitcase daily. Look for one that is not too heavy (unpacked) and preferably one with wheels. • Your suitcase must be able to fit into a space 29" tall, 20" wide & 10" deep. • Because many suitcases are advertised by their inside dimensions, please check the outside with a tape measure. Do not bring a suitcase that exceeds any of these dimensions. • You really don’t need a big suitcase—whether you’re a man or woman, big or small—trust us; we’ve been doing this for 30 years! You’ll manage perfectly well with a suitcase smaller than these dimensions. • Fully packed your suitcase may not weigh more than 50 lbs. • Each team member is allowed a school-sized backpack, suitcase, sleeping bag and pillow. • With the exception of your sleeping bag and pillow, everything you carry must fit in your suitcase or backpack. • Due to limited space, any extra "carry on" baggage is not permitted while you are on the road.

4 Storage Each team member is given a standard-size high school locker at the NET office for his/her storage use during the year.

• Because you will not know the climate you will travel to until well into training, you can bring more than will fit into the suitcase you will bring for on the road.

• Please pack extra items in cardboard boxes that can be discarded after you unload the contents into your lockers.

Receiving Mail • Your parents will receive your team schedules, containing the addresses where packages can be sent directly to you. • Please have all packages mailed to these addresses as they cannot be forwarded.

Anyone is welcome to send you letters to the NET office. Letters will be forwarded to you weekly.

Contact information Your Name c/o NET Ministries 110 Crusader Ave. W; W. St. Paul MN 55118 (651) 450-6833

Schedule for NET Training NET team members must plan on arriving in St. Paul on August 20, between 7am and 5pm.

• We will spend the weekend in St. Paul, then on August 23, we will depart for Camp Wapogasset in Amery, Wisconsin where we will remain until September 5.

• We will return to St. Paul where we will continue training until September 19 (Parish/School Teams) or September 24 (Traveling Teams), when you will hit the road.

• Although you will have some free time, NET training is a 24 hour, 7 day a week event; therefore, plan on focusing your energies into training.

• For local people, this means that you should not plan on going home to complete packing, visit family, etc., but should arrive at NET training completely ready as if you were from out of town.

5 Time off while serving with NET As mentioned on your interview weekend, you’ll have a two-week break at Christmas. Other than that, the only other time off we can guarantee is that needed to attend the wedding or funeral of an immediate family member (sibling, parent, or grandparent).

If you would like to request time off for any other reason, Contact David Rinaldi, the Program Director at [email protected] or 651.450.6833 ext. 30.

We receive many requests for time off for all sorts of reasons (, confirmations, anniver- saries, graduations, weddings of friends or extended family, etc.) Because of the importance of training, and because of the busyness of your schedule on the road, most requests are denied. Also, we can’t give you a firm answers until 3 weeks before the event because our answer depends on your current schedule, the health of your team, and your proximity to an airport.

Arrival Information Once you confirm your arrival travel plans, please relay this information to the NET office at your earliest convenience. • Arrival day for musicians confirmed for music leader training is August 10th between 7am and 3pm Central Time.

• Arrival day for all other NET team members is August 20th between 7am and 5 pm CT

If you have a conflict with these times, DO NOT finalize your travel plans before you have checked with us.

Airport Arrival We will provide transportation for you from the Minneapolis St. Paul Intrnational Airport (MSP) to the NET Center. • Once you arrive, retrieve your luggage in "Baggage Claim" on the lower level of the air- port. • Meet the NET representative at the NET Booth directly in front of "Baggage Claim" Door #5 (carousel #6). He/she will inform you of what to do next.

If you arrive at Terminal 2 and do not see a NET representative in the baggage claim area, take the light rail to Terminal 1 and meet a NET representative by Door #5.

The Terminal 2 light rail station is located on the north side of the MSP Value Parking ramp. From the terminal, take the skyway from Level 2 across to the parking facility. Follow the over- head signs through the covered parking facility.

Take the escalators or elevators down one level to the station platform. Use the light rail to travel between airport terminals. There is no charge for rail service between the terminals. • In the unlikely occurrence that you wait at this location more than an a hour, please call the NET office at (651) 450-6833.

6 • After hours or in case of emergency call Dave Rinaldi at (651) 334-8967.

If, while you are on route to the NET Center, you find that your arrival time or flight number is changed or if your flight is canceled or delayed, please contact the NET Center as soon as pos- sible.

If you are flying Delta: NET is a part of the Delta Airlines SkyBonus program, which is a frequent flyer program for companies. When you fly Delta/Northwest, you can use still use your own frequent flyer num- ber and earn your own miles… but please be sure to add NET’s number to your ticket so NET can earn free flights too. Our number is US797664778.

If you forget to add the number when you book a flight, you can add it at the airport.

Arrival by Car Please contact us to let us know when you will arrive. • If the car in which you will arrive is your own, please be sure to have someone accompany you who can return the car back home again. • We are not able to store cars for the year.

Arrival by Bus If you are arriving by bus, please arrive at the St. Paul bus station, rather than the Minneapolis bus station.

7 MINISTRY PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (MPD)

Now that you have been accepted to serve with NET Ministries, it’s time to begin the first phase of your journey, called Ministry Partnership Development (MPD).

MPD is about your own spiritual transformation, personal conviction for your mission, and mobilizing people and resources to help you fulfill the Great Commission. During your time of MPD, NET staff member Paul Ives will coach you in the process of biblical support raising, equip you with needed resources, provide regular MPD reports, and help you stay on track toward your goal of reaching full support before you arrive for training. He will be available during regular business hours to aid and encourage you every step of the way. You will be amazed at God’s ability to provide. Your faith and trust in God will grow in a way that will help sustain you during your time with NET. When you see God do amazing things in helping you raise support, you will also see Him do amazing things in bringing the others!

Before launching fully into your support raising, we recommend you spend an hour reading key scripture verses to learn about asking others to give. A short study is available on our website at www.netusa.org/partnership and Paul will be mailing you a packet that includes an 8-page booklet called “A Fresh, Biblical Approach to Fully Funding Your Ministry.”

For the 2015-16 year of service with NET Each team member is asked to raise a minimum of $5,000 for their year of service, a small por- tion of the $20,000 it actually costs NET.

• This minimum $5,000 you raise will help offset the costs of housing and meals during training, health insurance, and your $100 monthly stipend. • The overall goal is to not only raise $5,000, but to build a support team of people who are invested in the mission of NET Ministries. The average team member raises over $6,000. • Leading up to training, Paul Ives will work with you to get you to your fundraising goal. o No matter what your situation is, Paul wants to work with you to build your sup- port team and reach your goal before you come to fall training. o You will also attend 2 MPD training webinars to help you get started. • Paul has developed a process that will get you fully funded as long as you allow the Lord and the people around you to help you prepare for this wonderful year of mission. This process consists of three-steps to getting into contact with potential partners: 1. Write a letter explaining what you are doing and indicate in this letter that you will be calling them in the next week. 2. Follow through on your word and call them. If they are not local, you will need to ask for a specific gift amount over the phone. If they are local, see point 3 below. 3. If you have the opportunity, meet with them in person to ask them to join your team with a specific gift that will help you achieve your goal.

8 • If your pastor allows you to make a parish appeal, we have developed a plan for you to make a successful appeal at your home parish. Parish appeals are a great way to in- vite many people into the mission of NET Ministries but should not be seen as your primary way of reaching your goal. Almost 90% of the funds raised from NET team members come from individual donors and less than 10% come from parishes.

• You may also have other ideas for fundraisers such as bake sales, concerts, raffle tickets, or car washes. While some of these events are fun to plan and help bring people to- gether to learn about the mission of NET Ministries, they should not be seen as a substi- tute to reaching your goal and developing authentic ministry relationships. Paul will be discussing the pros and cons of different fundraising events during your webinar train- ing.

• Paul has put together the diagram available at netusa.org/partnership. It shows that it takes about 22 ministry partners giving between $100 - $1,000 to get each team mem- ber to $5,000. We encourage you to send this out with your letter or bring it to your face to face meetings and ask for monthly gifts. Monthly gifts, as opposed to one-time gifts, allow donors more flexibility and ability to give a greater amount to your ministry.

• To achieve 22 donors, you will need to write 80 letters resulting in 40 meetings, which will cultivate 20 mission partners who will bring you to 100% of your goal.

Through hard work and trust in God, we at NET Ministries know that you can reach this goal. In the last two years over 98% of the team members reached or exceed the minimum goal and the average team member raises over $6,000. You also get an increased stipend (up to $150 each month) for raising over the minimum $5,000 goal.

While you should be able to arrive fully-funded, we allow some exceptions designed to ac- commodate members who were recruited late in the or are from overseas. If you fall into these categories, it is important that you communicate at least weekly with Paul regarding your progress. You will also be required to meet some minimum standards outlined below: • All team members recruited late must raise a minimum of $2,500 in order to report to training in August. • If you plan to attend Musicians’ Training and were recruited late in the process, you must be at a minimum of $3,500 in order to attend. • All overseas missionaries must arrive at a minimum of $4,000 to attend NET training. • All team members, regardless of when they were recruited, must have raised at least $4,000 in order to return for their second half of service after Christmas break. • Any team member arriving at less than $3,500 needs to e-mail a 5W’s address work- sheet to Paul at least one week before arriving at NET Ministries. This should have at least 10 names of potential partners that you are pursuing.

9 All of these requirements come through years of wisdom and experience shared by many evangelistic ministries throughout the country. Ever since NET Ministries has put minimum re- quirements into place, no missionary has been unable to meet them. The key is to get started immediately. Some missionaries have been able to secure all of their support and over 20 donors in less than two weeks with some persistence and follow up.

If you have not heard from Paul or have not received your MPD packet, please feel free to reach out to him at 651.450.6833 x125 or [email protected] and he will help you get started.

Please visit www.netusa.org/partnership and start the following tasks right away: 1) Download the Team Member Letter and start working on your draft. 2) Download the Five W’s Address Worksheet and start gathering names and addresses of potential ministry partners. 3) Download and read Fully Funding Your Ministry (8-page PDF booklet).

10 NET TEAM MEMBER PERSONAL CONDUCT POLICIES

11 Investigative Action Action taken if a team member is accused of inappropriate behavior, or fails to adhere to stan- dards of appropriate behavior: • It is the policy of NET Ministries to investigate all accusations of wrongdoing • The accused team member is removed from retreat ministry. • He or she may be brought to the NET office. • If the accusation is found to be true, action follows as listed below. • If the accusation is found to not be true, the team member is returned to retreat ministry and appropriate follow-up action is taken.

Disciplinary Action If a team member is found guilty of violating the Personal Conduct Policy, disciplinary action will follow.

Possibilities include: • A Cautionary Report • A Letter of Reprimand • Probationary period • Dismissal from NET Ministries • Appropriate authorities contacted

Because it isn't possible to list all possible serious wrong doing, NET Ministries reserves the right to act upon any actions it deems inappropriate.

Note about smoking NET is aware that some people choose to smoke. Smoking is not prohib- ited on NET, but opportunities to smoke on NET are limited (e.g., no smoking on retreat, in the van, in front of retreatants, contact people, host families, etc.).

Many people find it helpful (and we encourage you) to stop smoking before they come to NET.

12 MUSIC INFORMATION

Music Training: August 10th-20th Invitations to music training will be mailed out in mid-June. If you would like to attend Music Training, contact Steve Villa (651-450-6833 or [email protected]) as soon as possible. If you are attending Music Training you must arrive in St. Paul on Aug. 10th by 3pm.

Bringing Instruments on the Road: Road life can be hard on musical instruments. Please consider prayerfully if you are willing to risk wear and tear before you bring your instrument. We recommend purchasing a hard shell case for your instrument. Each team can bring a limited number of instruments on the road and often those instruments are shared among the team musicians. Please also consider if you are willing to allow other musicians to play your instrument.

If you bring an instrument on the road, we recommend:

COMPLETE THESE STEPS BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

Photos: Have a photo taken of yourself with your instrument. Sign and date it.

Bill of Sale: If possible make copies of the original bill of sale, including total price, place of purchase and date. If original bill is lost, at least make a note of where and when it was purchased.

Estimate: Take your instrument to a music store or dealer and have someone in the business write up an estimate of current value and have them sign it, date it, and indicate their place of business. On this estimate have them indicate any damage or wear (i.e. worn frets, warping, major cracks, etc.).

Insurance: Call your parents’ homeowners or renters insurance to see if your instrument is covered. Consider purchasing insurance for your instrument, as NET cannot assume responsibility for loss, theft or damage.

13 PARENT’S PAGE

No matter how old we are, our parents remain concerned for our well-being. NET Ministries desires to keep in good communication with your parents throughout your NET year. To help answer questions your parents may ask, please give them this page. Your parents are welcome to contact the NET staff at any time with questions.

If you travel daily, how will I know where you are? Each month, the Program Director will email a schedule to the parents of the NET team members. This schedule will tell you where your son or daughter is each day. Please email [email protected] now so he has your email address. This way, you won’t miss the schedule or any pertinent news.

Team Member Time Off Your son or daughter has a two week break at Christmas (See “Important Dates” page). Other than that, the only other time off we can guarantee is that needed to attend the wedding or funeral of an immediate family member (sibling, parent, or grandparent). If your son or daugh- ter would like to request time off for any other reason, he/she should contact David Rinaldi, the Program Director at [email protected] or 651.450.6833 ext. 30. We receive many requests for time off for all sorts of reasons (baptisms, confirmations, anniver- saries, graduations, weddings of friends or extended family, etc.)

Because of the importance of training, and because of the busyness of your child’s retreat schedule, most requests are denied. Also, we can’t give you a firm answer until 3 weeks before the event because our answer depends on your child’s current schedule, the health of his or her team, and their proximity to an airport (if appropriate).

How will I contact you in case of an emergency? Training: During training, it will be easier for your son or daughter to contact you rather than vice versa. The training schedule is busy, and for the first two weeks we will be at a camp where there are only a few telephones available for our use.

If there is a family emergency, please call David Rinaldi at 651.334.8967. He leads the training for the NET Teams and will have his cell phone with him at all times.

On the Road: Once your son or daughter leaves training, you can contact him/her in one of 2 ways:

By using the schedule (mentioned above) NET will have sent you, or by contacting the NET of- fice. On each day of the schedule you will find the telephone number of the parish contact person who is coordinating NET's visit that day.

In addition, each team is assigned two staff persons called Team Supervisors. You will receive their names and after-hours telephone numbers in mid-October. The team supervisors can contact your son or daughter for you and can help in any arrangements that need to be made.

14 How will I know where to mail all the wonderful care packages I am going to make for you? For each day on the schedule, you will find an address given. In the interest of efficiency, please mail packages directly to these addresses several days in advance of the team's arrival.

Unfortunately, we are NOT able to forward packages mailed to the NET office. However, the NET office will forward weekly any letters for team members that arrive at our office.

A Note about Insurance

Despite rising medical costs, NET Ministries remains committed to providing quality medical insurance for its missionaries. We do not want unforeseen medical expenses to get in the way of the mission of “challenging young Catholics to love Christ and to embrace the life of the Church.”

To help keep costs low, NET has chosen a “Partially Self-funded” medical plan in which the ministry absorbs the first $40,000 of medical bills for each missionary while purchasing insur- ance for amounts in excess of that. While this system has worked well, it is always to NET’s advantage to keep missionaries on their parents’ plan when possible.

We are inviting you to consider this possibility. Recent legislation in many states has allowed more and more children to remain on their parents’ medical plan, while no longer requiring that they be full-time students. Often children can remain on the plan until age 26.

Some may wonder: Will my child be covered around the country if I choose to keep them on my plan? Will I have to pay the out-of-pocket expenses that could occur? Rest assured, NET will “fill in all the gaps” and ensure that your child is covered and that the coverage will not cost you anything.

NET offers a $100.00 cash incentive to any missionary who is able to remain insured under a different plan. Many of our current missionaries were able to take advantage of this last year.

If you will need to take advantage of NET’s medical insurance, please contact NET’s Administrator Dan Brewer at (651) 450-6833.

15 NET Ministries is currently carrying health insurance for staff and team members with Meritain INC. A basic schedule of benefits is shown below.

Health Insurance

Schedule of Benefits for Team Members

There are some exceptions to your insurance. They include:

If the insurance company will not cover a condition, you are responsible for the cost:

No coverage for: • Routine care • Chiropractic care. • Eye exams, glasses, or contacts. • Dental exams or dental work, unless injury related. • Preexisting conditions. Any questions call the NET Administrator).

If these exceptions apply to you, or could apply, you may want to carry additional coverage at your own expense.

Life Insurance benefit: You will receive a life insurance benefit of $15,000.

For more details of the plan, contact NET’s Administrator, Dan Brewer: 651-450-6833
