BIRDS OF TARANGIRE SAFARI LODGE
Whilst most visitors to Tarangire Safari Lodge may have come primarily to experience the spectacular large mammal populations of Tarangire National Park, few can fail to notice the birds around the lodge. From the colourful Superb Starling cleaning up on the terrace, to the early-morning wake-up call of dawn cries of the Crested Francolins it’s hard to avoid noticing the abundant birdlife that calls the Safari Lodge home.
Colourful and noisy residents, the Orange-bellied Parrot and its smaller relative the Yellow Collared Lovebird area easily noticed by the most casual observer, whilst the trained eye will be looking out for Mottle-throated Spine-tails among the flocks of Little Swifts, and identifying the raptors that circle at eye-level past the terrace.
For keen birders, a stay at Tarangire Safari Lodge is a must for any birding visit to Tanzania. As well as providing easy access to find a number of Tanzanian endemics (e.g. Rufous-tailed Weaver, Ashy Starling and the previously mentioned Yellow-collared Lovebird), a pre-breakfast stroll past the tents is likely to give a healthy start to the day’s bird list: half an hour around dawn should result in around 60 species. At peak times of the year, repeating the walk in the evening can result in the observation of 100 species around the lodge alone: Tarangire is truly a bird-watcher’s paradise!
To assist the identification of the birds around the Safari Lodge, we have compiled the following checklist (TANAPA maintain a list for the whole Park). The names provided are those of Stevenson & Fanshawe's indispensable “The Birds of East Africa”, and for each species we give an indication of relative abundance around the Safari Lodge as follows: c Common birds R Rare birds
Unlikely to be missed by keen birders in a two night stay. Unusual visitors and should not be expected by the casual visitor. S Scarcer birds M Seasonal Migrants birds
Unlikely to be missed by keen birders in a two night stay, but won’t Seen in abundance when in season. be found every day.
