CHARLES RYAN AUSTIN BROBST Head Coach Assistant Coach - Field Events

Charles Ryan has a strong coaching background and brings a wealth of experience to the A 2007 UNM graduate and former University of New Mexico athlete Brobst joins the Urban Knights as Head Track and Cross Country Coach. This will be his first season with the Academy of Art staff from the University of New Mexico where he served as a graduate assis- Academy of Art. tant for 2 years. As a graduate assistant at New Mexico Brobst was responsible for coaching the horizontal jumpers and assisting with the sprints and hurdles. In 2010 Brobst was the meet Ryan is no stranger to success, both as an athlete and a coach. He spent three seasons as director and coordinator for the high school meets hosted at the Albuquerque Convention the Assistant Sprints/Hurdles Coach for Louisiana Tech. While coaching at Louisiana Tech Ryan Center. Under his direction the meets brought in high school athletes from New Mexico, trained 30 WAC Conference Champions, 28 NCAA Regional Qualifiers, and 12 NCAA National Colorado, Arizona, California, and other southwestern high schools.

Prior to his arrival at Louisiana Tech, the Bay Area native from Richmond, CA had major success at the club and high school level. He led Brobst was part of the staff that led the Lobos’ men’s team to an eighth-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships and 16th in 2009. numerous athletes to All-American high school accolades. His athletes broke three US National records, won six individual national champion- He coached UNM’s first female indoor All-American Deanna Young in 2009, and in 2008 coached Alesha Walker to an Olympic Trials birth in the ships and 15 state champions. Ryan co-founded Track Knoxville in 2005, a club team out of Knoxville, TN, that sent 100 percent of its graduates to Long Jump. While at UNM, Brobst worked with 3 All-American, 6 Top 10 All-Time UNM Marks, 7 Regional Qualifying Marks, 2 School Record Division-I NCAA programs. Holders, 18 MWC Finalists, 5 USATF Sr and Jr National Qualifiers

During his four year college tenure, Ryan ran hurdles and relays for both UCLA and South Carolina. While at South Carolina, he earned a BA in Brobst recently completed his graduate degree in Sports Administration at UNM. Liberal Arts with a major in Sociology, and was a part of the quartet that set an American record in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay in 2003 and was a US Junior All-American while at UCLA.

BEN DELAND BAYANO KAMANI Assistant Coach Assistant Coach

Ben DeLand started his coaching career as a Volunteer Assistant Coach on the 2010 Urban Bayano Kamani is a former 2-time Olympian who will start his collegiate coaching career as Knights cross country team. DeLand now embarks on his first season as Assistant Coach of the the recruiting coordinator for the Urban Knights Track and Field Team’s, while also assisting 2011 ART U Track & Field program. DeLand used the 2010 season to learn the athletes and coaching style of Head Coach Kamani was raised in Houston, Tx but as a professional represented Panama five times on Charles Ryan. the world stage for athletics; making 3 World Championship teams (2003 , 05 , 07 ) and 2 Olympic Teams (2004 Greece, and 2008 ). Kamani had his best international finish in 2004 at the XXVIII Olympic Games where he finished 5th overall in the 400m Hurdles just missing a place on the podium in a blistering time of 48.74.

DeLand spent four years on the UC Davis cross country team. DeLand earned his Bachelors Degree from UC Davis in Economics, he minored in Exercise Biology with a focus on Sports Psychology. He graduated from Baylor in 2002 with a BBA in Management Information Systems.

As a Texas High School star representing Westbury High School in Houston, TX Bayano earned the Gatorade Athlete of the Year as a SR. At the time he also was the State Record Holder in the 300m Hurdles clocking a blistering 35.76, and once held the High School National Record in the 400m Hurdles at 50.86. In addition to being a High School All-American, Kamani also received the Houston Scholar Athlete Award for his academic accomplishments.
