Bible Story Outline Keeping up with Mephibosheth (David and Mephibosheth) • 2 Samuel 9:1-13 252 Groups November 2016, Week 3 Bible Story Outline, 4-5 Bible Story Outline Keeping Up with Mephibosheth (David and Mephibosheth) • 2 Samuel 9:1-13 SETTING UP THE STORY • Last week we talked about two guys who were BFFs, David and Jonathan • Jonathan chose to honor David by defending him, protecting him, and putting him first • Jonathan had said to David, “Whatever happens, please be kind to me … and to all my family.” • Saul and Jonathan were killed in the battle • It was many years and many difficult battles before David was finally king over all of Israel DAVID REMEMBERS HIS PROMISE • Finally, David was king • Choose a kid to be David and hold the big head • David remembered the promise he had made all those years before • Read 2 Samuel 9:1 DAVID AND ZIBA • The officials sent for Ziba, a man who had served Saul’s family for many years • Choose a kid to be Ziba and hold the big head • Ziba might have been a little nervous about being asked to meet with King David • Yes, a son of Jonathan was still living; his name was Mephibosheth • Both of Mephibosheth’s feet had been hurt and he wasn’t able to walk • David had Mephibosheth brought to him • Choose a kid to be Mephibosheth and hold the big head DAVID AND MEPHIBOSHETH • Mephibosheth probably knew that his father Jonathan had been good friends with David • He probably also knew the awful truth that his grandfather Saul had tried to kill David • As he was brought before David, Mephibosheth fell down on his knees • Read 2 Samuel 9:6 • Read 2 Samuel 9:7 • David, the king, had summoned him for one purpose—to show him kindness • Read 2 Samuel 9:8 • David was making sure that he KEPT that promise to his friend • David called for Ziba to return • David told Ziba that he was giving everything that belonged to Saul and his family to Mephibosheth • From that time on, Mephibosheth and his family came to live in Jerusalem, and David provided everything they needed • Dismiss volunteers WRAPPING UP THE STORY • David honored his promise to his friend Jonathan so many years later • BL: Honor others by keeping your promises. • Sometimes we say, “I promise,” but we might not realize how important it is for us to follow through • But we know that God keeps His promises to us • And that’s how God wants us to live, too—to come through on OUR promises ©2016 The reThink Group, Inc. Hess Cincinnati, Ohio April 2021 Abstract The end of 2 Samuel’s Jerusalem conquest posits a challenge for modern Scripture scholars. 2 Sam 5:8b contains a puzzling reference to the blind and the lame being banned from a house. It seems that this line was added into the narrative due to similarity in vocabulary utilized in the pericope, referencing an idea or a mindset that the author or the author’s culture had at large at the time of writing. This thesis attempts to answer the question as to the identity of the blind and the lame referenced, as well as what “house” they are not allowed to enter. After engaging in the scholarship surrounding this passage, I hope to show that this addition into the Samuel narrative continues a theme of disability and role reversal by the author. The blind and the lame correspond to the families of David and Saul. The kings of Israel and their descendants are found unworthy of the kingship through their unfaithfulness and are thus removed from the role in the Deuteronomistic narrative. This thesis by Aaron C. Not many biblical scholars have attempted to appropriate Mephibosheth’s deformity with disability phenomena in our modern society today. This article argues that the biblical narrative about Mephibotheth’s deformity should inform members of the public to be proactive by responding positively to people with disabilities in our modern society. The narrative is reread from a pastoral hermeneutical perspective in which a social model of disability is employed to explore the ambivalence associated with disability in our society today. In the final analysis, I will make recommendations towards emancipation of people with disabilities. Key Words: Rereading, Mephibosheth, Disability, Society, Social Model Introduction As rightly put by Mary Jo Iozzio (2011:139) people with disabilities have experienced varying degrees of acceptance throughout recorded history. Modern societies tend to perceive people with disabilities as incapacitated to do what non-disabled people can do. This perception discriminates against people with disabilities in many respects, including career opportunities. This article employs the biblical story of Mephibosheth’s deformity as an example to explore the complexities associated with the phenomenon of disability today. Disabilities of various types are found everywhere in the world: the visually impaired, the hearing impaired, the intellectually challenged, the paralytic, the epileptic, the leper, among others.

In Second Samuel chapter five, David is established as the king of all Israel. In chapter six he brings the ark of God to Jerusalem. In chapter seven we have the account of God’s covenant with David. And in chapter eight we get a summary of David’s faithful work as God’s conquering king, defeating the enemies of God’s people to the north, south, east, and west. We have been on these big, grand events for the past few chapters, and now, here in chapter nine, we zoom in on something much smaller … on a scene that one commentator has called “one of the most moving and beautiful stories in the Old Testament.” [Leithart, 229] And so let us be attentive this evening as we come to Second Samuel, chapter nine. He had to learn to be cared for by others. And he always had to pay special attention to his feet, they quickly developed sores and then they took a long time to heal because they had poor circulation due to lack of exercise. His nurse continued to care for him but living in secret, without his dad, without his grandpa, was hard, very hard, very very hard for a long long time.
