Bible Story Outline Keeping Up with Mephibosheth ( and Mephibosheth) • 2 Samuel 9:1-13

SETTING UP THE STORY • Last week we talked about two guys who were BFFs, David and • Jonathan chose to honor David by defending him, protecting him, and putting him first • Jonathan had said to David, “Whatever happens, please be kind to me … and to all my family.” • and Jonathan were killed in the battle • It was many years and many difficult battles before David was finally king over all of Israel

DAVID REMEMBERS HIS PROMISE • Finally, David was king • Choose a kid to be David and hold the big head • David remembered the promise he had made all those years before • Read 2 Samuel 9:1

DAVID AND ZIBA • The officials sent for Ziba, a man who had served Saul’s family for many years • Choose a kid to be Ziba and hold the big head • Ziba might have been a little nervous about being asked to meet with King David • Yes, a son of Jonathan was still living; his name was Mephibosheth • Both of Mephibosheth’s feet had been hurt and he wasn’t able to walk • David had Mephibosheth brought to him • Choose a kid to be Mephibosheth and hold the big head

DAVID AND MEPHIBOSHETH • Mephibosheth probably knew that his father Jonathan had been good friends with David • He probably also knew the awful truth that his grandfather Saul had tried to kill David • As he was brought before David, Mephibosheth fell down on his knees • Read 2 Samuel 9:6 • Read 2 Samuel 9:7 • David, the king, had summoned him for one purpose—to show him kindness • Read 2 Samuel 9:8 • David was making sure that he KEPT that promise to his friend • David called for Ziba to return • David told Ziba that he was giving everything that belonged to Saul and his family to Mephibosheth • From that time on, Mephibosheth and his family came to live in , and David provided everything they needed • Dismiss volunteers

WRAPPING UP THE STORY • David honored his promise to his friend Jonathan so many years later • BL: Honor others by keeping your promises. • Sometimes we say, “I promise,” but we might not realize how important it is for us to follow through • But we know that God keeps His promises to us • And that’s how God wants us to live, too—to come through on OUR promises
