Museum Outreach Manager (Education, Events, Fundraising & Digital)

The Opportunity An exciting opportunity exists for an energetic, dynamic and innovative individual to join our small team at Museum of Jurassic Marine Life located in the beautiful, idyllic village of on Dorset’s world famous . The museum opened in October 2016 and houses the remarkable collection of one man’s passion, bringing to life their ‘stories from deep time’. The museum is a registered charity which mainly focuses on education and research and was recently awarded accredited and designated status by the Arts Council.

Over the last 35 years Steve Etches has discovered, collected and researched over 2,500 incredible late Jurassic from the Kimmeridgian Clay Formation. These are now on display in a new immersive museum which takes the visitor on a journey through underwater life 150 million years ago.

Role & Responsibilities The Museum Outreach Manager will co-ordinate and run all aspects of the museums’ public-facing footprint. The role will report to the Chair of the Board of Trustees and will be supported by the Head of Collections (Dr Steve Etches), Museum Operations Manager and other staff members.

The person occupying this role will lead and manage the museums’ physical events and exhibit enhancements (in close cooperation with the Museum Operations Manager), education program, fundraising (in line with the business plan) and digital footprint. The role will require deep insight into the ethos and educational philosophy of the museum, as well as practiced roles in successful grant applications.

Main Responsibilities • All fundraising activities. Ensuring that non-visitor income streams (including legacies, donations etc) and proactive fundraising is carried out ethically, safely and in line with the museums’ values. Cooperate with Museum Operations Manager regarding Gift Aid submissions. • Grant application – including the maintenance of current and appropriate grants on offer to facilities such as this. • Tracking of existing grant performance and assigned monies – maintaining close relationships with grant stakeholders (HLF, Arts Council etc), management of grant holder expectations and ensuring the strong performance of the museum. • Developing an education plan for the museum, both on-site and digitally. • Manage a digital marketing and engagement strategy, principally focussed around social media, subscriptions and national / international online events. Manage two staff members assigned to digital engagement. • Assisting Steve Etches with the needs/future of the collection. • Future planning (collection/museum strategy) for the museum working jointly with the Trustees, Ops Manager and Steve Etches (and the museum team). • Representative for the staff and a liaison between the staff and the Trustees. • Escalation point for this department of the museum should an issue arise.

• Carry out any other necessary tasks required in the overall operation of the museum.

Skills and Experience • Experience of working in a museum environment (ideally in the field of Earth Science). • Strong communications skills in all media: written, spoken, social media • Strong organisational, project management and monitoring skills. • Ability to lead and integrate a small team of staff and volunteers. • Experience in education and or research involving Earth Sciences. • Knowledge of key grant awarding bodies and processes. • Experience of securing significant gifts from Trusts, business and high net worth individuals.

Job Type: Full-Time Hours: 40 hours per week Contract: Permanent, Full Time to include some weekend working on a rota basis Salary: Up to £30,000 per annum based upon experience
