This article uses the case of pregnancy testing in Britain to investigate the process whereby new and often controversial reproductive technologies are made visible and normal- ized in mainstream entertainment media. It shows how in the 1980s and 1990s the then nascent product placement industry was instrumental in embedding pregnancy testing in British cinema and television’s dramatic productions. In this period, the pregnancy-test close- up became a conventional trope and the thin blue lines associated with Unilever’s Clearblue rose to prominence in mainstream consumer culture. This article investigates the aestheticiza- tion of pregnancy testing and shows how increasingly visible public concerns about ‘schoolgirl mums’, abortion and the biological clock, dramatized on the big and small screen, propelled the commercial rise of Clearblue. It argues that the Clearblue close-up ambiguously concealed as much as it revealed; abstraction, ambiguity and flexibility were its keys to success. Unilever first marketed the leading Clearblue brand of home pregnancy test in the mid- 1980s. Since then home pregnancy tests have become a ubiquitous and highly familiar reproductive technology and diagnostic tool.

In this edition we welcome a number of new partners who have recently joined the charity to assist our work, particularly the support we provide to former and current players in all levels of the game. All Sport Insurance and Purple Travel have come on board as members of the newly-formed Rugby League Cares Business Club which aims to provide a wide range of services that help players, particularly in areas where the nature of their occupation can put them at a disadvantage. 2016 proved to be a challenging year for the charity as we continued to play an important role in assisting players successfully transitioning from the sport by awarding education and welfare grants. We enjoyed a very successful partnership with Rugby AM and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal on the Ride to Rio challenge; and we secured grants from Curious Minds and Cape UK to support club foundations to deliver some life-affi rming experiences for young people in their communities via a Cultural Welcome Partnership programme. Council also APPROVED the recommendation of the Nominations Committee that Rob Briers be elected as Chairman of the Community Game Board for three seasons starting with the 2017/18 season. iii. The recruitment process for Women & Girls RFU representative on Council is underway v. The crucial differences are first, that UKIP have not experienced the decline in support in general election polling that they normally do after a European election. On the contrary, they are now consistently placed in third position in polls of general election vote intentions. Second, their ratings in polls of European election vote intention are some ten points higher on average than they were in the run up to the 2009 contest for seats in the European Parliament (EP). Third, they have more than double the number of members and a much better, even if still small base in local councils having secured 147 seats in the 2013 local elections. Fourth, while they have benefitted in the past from Conservative supporters lending UKIP their vote, they are in an even better position to do so this time around given that the Tories are now in government. On top of that, if UKIP’s campaign to win even more support from working class voters is successful, they will make headway in areas where Labour are traditionally strong. The presence of the Liberal Democrats in government alongside the collapse of the BNP add to the auspicious conditions for UKIP in 2014.

    Review of private Further Education colleges and English Language Schools Leith School of Art 1 June 2016 The review process This review report follows the quality framework for the review arrangements for private further education colleges and English language Schools in Scotland, April 2012. The review normally lasts for three days. Over the three-day period, the review team: engage with learners; observe episodes of learning and teaching and provide feedback to each member of teaching staff or other learning facilitator on strengths and areas for further development; conduct interviews and undertake other activity required to determine the extent of concordance between documentary evidence and practice; evaluate evidence against the 11 reference quality indicators; and identify key strengths and areas for further development for the organisation. Education Scotland is an approved educational oversight body authorised by the Home Office to inspect private further education colleges and English language Schools in Scotland. Reviews are arranged under three high-level questions which Education Scotland is adopting for evaluative purposes: How well are learners progressing and achieving relevant, high quality outcomes? How effective are the organisation’s learning and teaching processes? How effective are the organisation’s leadership and quality culture? Education Scotland reviews are designed to: support and promote quality enhancement in organisations to provide the best possible experience for the learner; provide information to the Home Office, when required, on the quality of organisations and the learning experience they provide; provide an independent evaluation to assist organisations in informing prospective and current learners of the quality of the organisation’s and services; evaluate organisations against the Education Scotland quality framework, March 2012; and complement organisation-led internal review and self-evaluation.
