Manga Artist to Appear at First Mini Comic-Con Thompson-Nicola Regional District Library System tnrdlib.ca Manga Artist to Appear at First Mini Comic-Con For Immediate Release (September 19/12): ZAP! BANG! KAPOW! The TNRD Library System’s Kamloops Library, in partnership with High Octane Comics, is hosting its first ever Mini Comic-Con. The event, which goes Saturday, Oct. 6, starting at 2 p.m., features an appearance by a well-established comic-book artist, as well as fun art and costume contests that offer prizes. Open to teens 13 to 18 years old, the inaugural Mini Comic-Con will be highlighted by the appearance of Vancouver-based manga artist Nina Matsumoto, a.k.a. “Space Coyote.” Matsumoto is an Eisner Award-winning comic-book artist who has released two volumes of her original manga Yokaiden through Del Rey Manga. A lifelong fan of The Simpsons, she also regularly pencils for Bongo Comics (Simpsons Comics, Bart Simpson Comics). Matsumoto, with some help from High Octane Comics, will also act as judge for the Mini Comic-Con’s art contest. Budding artists are encouraged to create an original 2-D art piece in comic or manga style on any topic (keep it clean!) and in any media. Contestants are asked to keep the size of their artwork to a maximum of 18 inches by 24 inches for display purposes. Entries should be dropped off at the Children’s Desk at Kamloops Library by Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 5 p.m. All art will be displayed in the library and judging will take place the day of the event. Winners will be announced that day, too, with first prize supplied by High Octane Comics. There will also be an entry selected as a fan favourite. And don’t forget to dress up, as there will be a prize for best costume! -30- For more information contact: Susan McCowan, Head of Children’s Services, Kamloops Branch, 250.372.5145 — [email protected] The TNRD Library Systems covers 11 municipalities (Ashcroft, Barriere, Cache Creek, Chase, Clearwater, Clinton, Kamloops, Logan Lake, Lytton, Merritt and Sun Peaks) and 10 Electoral Areas - “A” (Wells Gray Country), “B” (Thompson Headwaters), “E” (Bonaparte Plateau), “I” (Blue Sky Country), “J” (Copper Desert Country), “L”, “M”, “N”, “O” (Lower North Thompson) and “P” (Rivers and the Peaks). The purpose of this research is to adapt the approaches used by prominent and influential writers and artists in the American superhero/action comic-book field to create an engaging Australian hero comic book. Further, the aim of this thesis is to bridge the gap between the lack of academic writing on the professional practice of the Australian comic industry. In order to achieve this, I explored and learned the methods these prominent and professional US writers and artists use. Compared to the American industry, the creating of comic books in Australia has rarely been documented, particularly in a formal capacity or from a contemporary perspective. The process I used was to navigate through the research and studio practice from the perspective of a solo artist with an interest to learn, and to develop into an artist with a firmer understanding of not only the medium being engaged, but the context in which the medium is being created.

525 West Monroe Street Chicago, Illinois 60661 312.902.5200 tel 312.902.1061 fax For Immediate Release May 5, 2010 Contact: Jason Milch 312-846-9647 [email protected] Pirate Website www.Htmlcomics.com Shut Down by Coordinated Efforts of Department of Justice, FBI, Katten and Consortium of Comic Publishers LOS ANGELES – Comic book pirating website www.htmlcomics.com has been shut down and all of its servers confiscated, following an FBI search based on a warrant alleging criminal copyright infringement. The FBI investigation was performed in coordination with the U.S. Department of Justice, a consortium of comic publishers and their legal counsel, a team of Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP attorneys specializing in the areas of intellectual property, publishing and comics, as well as local counsel in Miami. Prior to the combined efforts of the consortium and the authorities, Htmlcomics was believed to have been the largest, best-known and most easily accessible website of its kind, producing rampant copyright infringement on a daily basis and depriving artists and publishers of hard-earned and much- needed revenue. By April 2010, the website claimed to have an average of 1.6 million visits per day and more than 6,630,021 pages of comic books offered for unrestricted viewing. Ridding the Internet of such a large source of pirated content is a major victory for the comic industry and the publishing industry in general. Htmlcomics creator Gregory Hart, 47, acquired pirated copies of more than 5,700 series of comics spanning every major comic publisher in the United States, and made them available for public viewing on his site.
