News reports of ancient temples having been swept away in the Alakananda’s raging waters are bringing back traumatic memories of the Kedarnath floods in 2013. All these developments show the profound significance attached to this region and they prompt a historian to ask two fundamental and interrelated questions: How did the Uttarakhand Himalayas emerge as a deva bhumi and how did it develop into a focus of Hindu pilgrimage? A study of the archaeological record and inscriptional evidence suggests that many and varied agents and processes played important roles in gradually transforming this borderland into a sacred landscape. Artefacts found in the Himalayan foothills that are datable to the period extending from 300 BCE and 600 CE include an Ashokan rock edict, brick altars for conducting ashvamedha yagnas, coin hoards, and sculptures.     4 Years Achievements of the Ministry of Culture [2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18] 1. 100 Adarsh Monuments • A total of 100 Adarsh Monuments were identified for providing improved visitor amenities, especially for the physically challenged, besides cleanliness, drinking water, and interpretation centres, cafeteria, souvenir shop, wi-fi, garbage disposal etc. The civic amenities are being augmented at these sites. • 25 ASI sites were launched as “Adarsh Smarak” on 26th December, 2014. (List of 25 Adarsh Monuments at Annexure 1). • ASI has also identified above 25 Adarsh Monuments to provide Wi-Fi facility, which would be available free of cost for the first 30 minutes and thereafter it is chargeable on additional usage. • 75 more Adarsh Monuments protected by ASI have been identified and included in the list of “Adarsh Smarak” and the same are also being included in ‘Swachh Paryatan Mobile App’ launched by the Ministry of Tourism on 24th September 2016.     GOVERNMENT OF INDIA CULTURE LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO:2491 ANSWERED ON:01.08.2016 Identification of Heritage Sites Sivaprasad Dr. Naramalli Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state: (a) whether in 2002, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism had identified 72 heritage sites for overall development from tourism point of view and quite a substantial amount of work had been undertaken and the peace of work, slow down considerably in since 2004; (b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; (c) whether the Government has any plan to revive the works left half-way through at all the said 72 heritage sites and also to take up further upgradation of all such places; and (d) if so, the details thereof and the time by which the said work is likely to be completed? Answer MINISTER OF STATE, CULTURE AND TOURISM (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) (DR. MAHESH SHARMA) (a)to(d) From time to time, on priority basis, different monuments and sites of the Archaeological Survey of India are being taken up for developing tourist facilities and amenities. At present, 100 monuments/sites have been identified to be developed as Adarsh Smarak. The details of 100 centrally protected monuments identified and included in the list of 'Adarsh Smarak' in the country (State/UT-wise) is at Annexure. Besides, basic tourist amenities, Adarsh Monuments are provided with additional facilities like Wi-Fi, cafeteria, interpretation centre, brail signage, modern toilets etc. However, these identified facilities would be monument specific on the basis of actual requirement and feasibility on case to case basis.
